Hong Kong stocks head for weekly gain on earnings optimism; Wuxi AppTec rallies

Hong Kong stocks advanced on Friday, putting the city's benchmark on track for a weekly gain on expectations for improved earnings in some industries and additional policy support from Beijing to support growth.
The Hang Seng Index rose 1.4 per cent to 24,355.75 at 10.03am local time and the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 1.2 per cent. On the mainland, the CSI 300 Index climbed 0.6 per cent and the Shanghai Composite Index added 0.5 per cent.
Wuxi AppTec jumped 8.7 per cent to HK$86.75 after saying its first-half profit likely more than doubled from a year earlier. Affiliate Wuxi Biologics surged 3.5 per cent to HK$26.60. Alibaba Group Holding, owner of the Post, added 1.7 per cent to HK$105 and Tencent Holdings gained 0.9 per cent to HK$501.
The Hang Seng Index has risen 1.7 per cent this week, approaching a one-week high, as investors moved on from tariff news even after US President Donald Trump unveiled levies on a slew of key trading partners. Sentiment also got a lift ahead of a Politburo meeting scheduled for later this month, with recent data showing that entrenched deflation raised expectations about more robust stimulus measures.
Other major Asia-Pacific markets were mixed: Japan's Nikkei 225 was little changed, South Korea's Kospi rose 0.3 per cent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.1 per cent.

Standard Chartered to launch digital platform aimed at tech-savvy, young investors

Standard Chartered, one of Hong Kong's three note-issuing banks, will this month launch a digital platform for tech-savvy young investors as part of the lender's effort to attract affluent customers, according to its Hong Kong chief. Advertisement The platform would allow investors to carry out investment research and trade a range of products such as stocks, funds and other alternative assets, Mary Huen Wai-yi, the bank's CEO of Hong Kong, Greater China and North Asia, said in a media briefing on Friday. 'Traditionally, many wealthy customers like to talk to bankers or relationship managers about their investments. But the new generation of investors may prefer to trade on a digital platform by themselves,' Huen said. 'This is why we believe a new digital platform would help us attract a new group of mass and premium clients who have the potential to become our private banking clients in future.' The new platform was part of the lender's planned US$1.5 billion investment in the wealth management business over the next five years, with Hong Kong to be the focus of the expansion, group CEO Bill Winters told the Post in February. These have been effective in attracting wealthy customers to establish long-term relationships with the bank, Huen said.

Malaysia's pioneering violin maker crafts legacy from wood and passion

Tan Chin Seng is Malaysia's first professional violin maker. Over the past decade, he has earned international accolades. The field is still little-known in Southeast Asia, but now, Tan mentors a new generation of violin makers. Traditionally, this job is associated with Italy and other parts of Europe. The craft has now spread globally, with thriving communities in East Asia. Tan was a computer science graduate who used to help his family with their food business and also co-owned a music school. His path to violin-making started in China, on a trip to restore a violin. Curiosity about the instrument's construction led him to master maker Han Zhao Sheng. 'After completing the first violin, I knew this craft was for me,' Tan said.

Hong Kong's booming wealth sector to lead hiring and office expansion, HKMA says

The strong growth of Hong Kong's private banking and wealth management sectors will drive increased hiring and leasing of office space in the coming years, according to the chief executive of Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Major private banks' assets under management (AUM) in the city rose 14 per cent in the first half of the year compared with the end of December, while they hired more than 400 wealth management experts in the last two years, an increase of 12 per cent, said Eddie Yue Wai-man, without naming them. HSBC and Standard Chartered reported strong growth in their wealth management business in the first half in their interim results last week. Transactions by the city's 46 private banks hit HK$4.47 trillion (US$569.4 billion) last year, up 50 per cent from HK$2.97 trillion in 2022, he said, adding that some of them expanded their office space by as much as 50 per cent in recent years. HKMA chief executive Eddie Yue says Hong Kong lenders have benefited from the fast-growing wealth in Asia. Photo: Jonathan Wong 'Recently, a number of international banks and asset management firms have announced plans to further enlarge their operations in the city, with headcount growth projected to range from 10 per cent to 100 per cent in the next few years,' Yue said in an article posted on the HKMA's website.
