WA's Golden Outback: Two Aboriginal experiences you'll never forget

The Guardian30-05-2025
Western Australia's Golden Outback is known for its vast, wild beauty – but beyond the salt lakes, red-rock expanses and sweeping white-sand beaches lies a rich Aboriginal cultural landscape waiting to be explored.
Here, in a place of ancient stories and deep connection to country, two Aboriginal-owned tour operators offer unforgettable experiences that reveal the spirit of the land. For anyone seeking more from their journey – deeper perspectives, cultural understanding and a sense of place shaped over tens of thousands of years – these are experiences not to miss.

In Esperance (Kepa Kurl), Annie Dabb and her family welcome visitors to their ancestral lands via Dabungool Cultural Experiences. Named after Annie's grandfather, Dabungool is a family-run business grounded in Nyungah culture and a strong sense of place. Each guided walk shares cultural stories tied to the land, highlighting the seasonal foods, plants and animals that have long sustained life in this region.
The Hellfire Bay Walk is a journey through one of the most scenic and lesser-known spots in Cape Le Grand National Park (Mandoowernup). Walking from Hellfire Bay to Little Hellfire Bay, you'll learn about seasonal bush foods and plant life, and – in Makuru season (June-July) – may even spot migrating southern right whales just offshore. The trail winds among granite slabs and offers stunning coastal views, as guides provide insights into a landscape you'll soon realise is rich with meaning for the Aboriginal people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years.

On the Taananedtj Trail at Dempster Head, you'll forage for seasonal bush foods along a gentle walking track with sweeping views over Esperance Bay. Native herbs and edible plants are part of the story here, as you'll discover through tastings and sensory experiences along the way. The Wudjari people recognise six seasons – Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang – with seasonal indicators such as flowering plants marking when one season ends and another begins. The trail is dog-friendly, and classed as an easy walk, making it a great option for young families and travellers with mobility limitations.
For those wanting to explore inland, the Murdidyyinakabi Walk at Lake Monjingup offers insights into one of the most biodiverse areas in WA. This wheelchair-accessible walk reveals an astonishing variety of flora and fauna – including the pincushion hakea – along with some of the stories embedded in the land. You're likely to spot kangaroos, emus, frogs and birds while learning how the ecosystem guided traditional life.

Near Hyden, the iconic shape of Katter Kich, otherwise known as Wave Rock, rises from the outback like a cresting wave of granite. For Nyungar man Michael Ward, a guide who grew up in the region and has strong cultural ties to the land, this is more than a landmark – it's a place of deep spiritual significance.
Katter Kich Gallery & Tours connects visitors to the cultural history and living stories of the area through the sharing of traditional knowledge and seasonal lore, as well as providing access to some of the sacred sites here. The Half Day Tagalong Tour invites guests to follow Michael in their own 4WD vehicles as they visit places such as the Humps and Mulkas Cave. Along the way, he shares the Dreaming story behind the cave – a cautionary tale passed down through generations – and points out native bush foods, medicinal plants and local wildlife.
For early risers, the Morning Tour begins at Hippos Yawn and includes a gentle climb for panoramic sunrise views across the salt plains and outback. You'll learn about ancient hand stencils, traditional tracks and the cultural significance of each formation, while soaking up the shifting colours of the landscape in morning light.

The Twilight Tour showcases the changing hues of Wave Rock at sunset to the squawks and chatter of galahs flying overhead. The tour includes a moderate climb and finishes with Dreaming stories and cultural insights shared beneath the towering granite. Both the Morning and Twilight tours include visits to ancient art sites, as well as talks on how the seasons influenced the gathering of food and medicine in this semi-arid environment.
If you're heading to Western Australia's Golden Outback, Aboriginal cultural experiences can provide a deep understanding of places you might otherwise pass by – whether you're on a windswept beach or a hilltop trail, or at the base of a towering rock. Through storytelling, seasonal knowledge and walking together on country, these tours offer travellers opportunities to see this land in a new light.

Home and Away LEAVES Sydney's Northern Beaches for the first time in 36 years with new filming location revealed - and it's not in NSW

Home and Away is leaving Summer Bay behind for the first time in 36 years. The Australian soap opera has been filming at Palm Beach, in Sydney 's Northern Beaches, since its inception in 1988. But now the show is heading west - to Western Australia, to be precise. However, the move is not a permanent one, with what Channel Seven calls a 'high-stakes storyline' set to take place in the region. The episodes will be, filmed against the stunning natural beauty of Western Australia, the network revealed on Monday. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In partnership with Tourism Western Australia, this special Home and Away event will see the show trade the familiar sands of Summer Bay for the vast and varied landscapes of WA – from cosmopolitan Perth to its rugged coastline and expansive red outback. Filming will take place in October at several locations across the state. While storyline and casting details are being kept tightly under wraps, producers promise that Western Australia will take centre stage. 'Our cast and crew are beyond excited to be filming in Western Australia – a first for Home and Away,' Home and Away Series Producer, Lucy Addario, said. 'Its awe-inspiring beauty, diverse landscapes and sheer scale make it the perfect backdrop for this huge storyline. 'Working with the Tourism Western Australia team has been an absolute joy and we can't wait for audiences to fall in love with WA like we have.' The special Home and Away event will premiere in 2026 on Seven and 7plus. It comes after it was revealed that Home and Away is losing yet another beloved character, leading fans to wonder whether it may be the next soapie to leave screens. Pictured: A scene from the soap After news broke that Juliet Godwin is saying goodbye to the beloved Aussie series, rumours are circulating that another cast member is eyeing the door. According to reports, Matt Evans, who plays Theo Poulos in the series, is set to leave Summer Bay. Matt, 28, has been a regular feature on the show for three and a half years. The news of Matt's potential exit from the show points to a larger problem in the soapie sphere: could Home and Away be the next TV series to get the axe? Neighbours made headlines in February after it was revealed the show would be leaving screens a second time around, less than two years after it was first revived. The final ever episode will air at the end of 2025, with fans forced to say goodbye to Ramsay Street.

Mummy blogger Constance Hall reveals the 'extremely low' amount she got from the sale of her marital home with estranged husband

Famed blogger Constance Hall has finally found a buyer for her bushland property in Western Australia 's Margaret River. First listed for $1.3 million by the social media star in April, the six-bedroom, two-bathroom multi-level pad is now 'under offer' ahead of the final settlement. Located in a forest 271km from Perth, it features a herb garden and jacuzzi bath. Known as a 'mummy blogger', the 41-year-old mother of seven children moved out of the home after her partner Denim was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 2020. On Thursday, the Courier-Mail reported that no details of the sale - including the final price - have been released. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. However, Constance has been outspoken about her experience of selling the property, revealing that she was presented with 'extremely low' offers ahead of the final sale. Taking to her Facebook on Wednesday, Constance announced triumphantly, 'My beautiful home has sold, you guys, it settles in a month.' 'That was more stressful than I thought it would be, between extremely low cash offers from very very rich well known families to people's finance falling through,' she gushed. Elsewhere in the share Constance said, 'So, opening my home every week for the local public to judge hasn't been amazing.' She also said that while the house languished on the market for four months she feared that the 'right buyer would never come.' Constance moved out of the home after her partner Denim was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 2020. The family relocated to Perth so that Constance's mother could help look after her children, The West Australian reported. 'The house is breathtaking and that never wore off,' she told the publication. 'You feel it every single day. I've had to get used to different stress levels while living in Perth because I don't have that forest to unwind in every day. 'People don't realise the impact clean air and a huge tree have on them, but you notice it retrospectively when it's gone.' Surrounded by large gum trees, the original three-bedroom abode was constructed in 2008. Major renovations added three more bedrooms in 2018. Highlights include oversized timber ceilings and an expansive entertainment deck. Meanwhile, the main bedroom features a private balcony that offers a stunning view of the surrounding forest. The outdoor setting also has a shower, water feature and a timber pergola. The unique interior styling includes a wall mural and elaborate decorative tiling throughout. Constance and Denim, who met in 2017, 'married' and had their son Raja in 2018. The controversial mummy blogger explained up until recently, she was still legally married to her first husband, British carpenter Bill Mahon, because she couldn't cope with the red tape involved with getting a divorce, hence she and Denim are not legally married at this time.

Ben Cousins shows off some VERY rare photos of him with his kids on a wild Aussie holiday

Ben Cousins might find himself fielding AFL contract offers from battlers like St Kilda if he is not careful, after his latest Instagram post showed the former West Coast star looking shredded while taking a break with his children. Cousins' battles with addiction have been well documented since they became public in 2007 after a series of off-field incidents, including arrests and suspensions. He was suspended from the AFL in 2007 and returned in 2009 to play two seasons with Richmond before retiring. Cousins faced numerous legal issues between 2010 and 2019, including drug possession, breaching restraining orders, and stalking, which led to multiple jail sentences. He was last jailed in 2019 but had all outstanding charges cleared by the end of that year. Since then, Cousins' fight against drug addiction has seen him make a comeback that has completely turned his life around. While the 47-year-old tends to keep his private life out of the spotlight these days, he recently shared happy snaps from a visit to the north of Western Australia on holiday with his young family. Cousins travelled to Kimberley Sands Resort in Broome with his two children Angelique, 11, and Bobby, 13, from his previous relationship with their mother Maya. Cousins was also joined on a cruise by a host of other A-list Australian celebrities, including radio presenter Fifi Box, former host of The Project Carrie Bickmore, and former West Coast Eagles teammate Chris Judd and his wife Bec Judd. 'Holidays up North… even better than I remembered,' he posted. 'Great stay Kimberley Sands Resort, already planning a trip back.' While many footy fans remember the sad and alarming images of an emaciated and bearded Cousins during his addiction battle, he looked a picture of health on his family holiday. With a ripped physique that would put many current players to shame, he engaged in a series of wholesome activities with his children including fishing, swimming, and a helicopter ride across the WA terrain. Cousins has previously been busy with his media duties and appearance on Dancing With The Stars. Normally a very private person, Cousins was happy to pose and smile for photos on his journey with his son and daughter 'Benny, you're a f***ing legend brother,' one commented. 'Every single person in Australia is happy to see you up and about my brother. You are a true inspiration and a true Aussie. 'Congratulations on the new life and enjoy every second.' 'So proud of you Ben, every time I see your smiling face it is just lit up with joy,' another posted. 'Love seeing you happy and love listening to you every morning on the radio - this is what we always dreamed of for you. Looks like an awesome trip.' Since turning his life around, Ben Cousins has taken significant steps to rebuild both his career and reputation. He returned to football in a community role with the West Coast Eagles, helping promote youth development and engagement. Later, he began coaching the Perth Demons' under-19 colts team, contributing to the next generation of local players. Cousins has also re-entered the media, taking on roles as a football analyst and more recently as a co-host on a Perth breakfast radio show.
