Floods lash at Nepal-China border

KATHMANDU: Over two dozen people were missing after torrential rain in China's Tibet region triggered a deluge in the Bhote Koshi River, washing away the "Friendship Bridge" that links China and Nepal, officials said on Tuesday. Weather forecasting experts said the flood might have been the result of an overflowing glacial lake in Tibet since there had been no heavy rainfall in the immediate catchment area of the river in the preceding 24 hours.
At least 18 people are missing in Nepal while China's official Xinhua news agency said 11 people were unaccounted for on the Chinese side of the mountainous border region. In Nepal, the missing included six Chinese workers and three police personnel, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said on X. It added that eight electric cars were also washed away and a small hydroelectric plant was damaged in the flood. Trade between Nepal and China was disrupted because of the bridge's destruction, officials said. — Reuters

Chinese cities fight floods unleashed by record rain

BEIJING: A record summer downpour in China's central province of Hubei dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours on the city of Xianfeng, prompting authorities on Tuesday to move 18,000 people to safety, shut schools and suspend bus services. Gushing brown torrents washed away cars in the city of 300,000 deluged on Monday night, local media videos showed online, as more than 350 mm of rain fell in one area. State media said more than 18,000 were shifted to safety, while water and power supplies were disrupted, prompting the closure of schools and suspension of bus services. Chinese meteorologists blame climate change for heavier and more frequent rain, saying communities in mountainous areas are particularly vulnerable to flash floods, while rural areas lack forecasting capabilities. "Accurately forecasting the intensity and exact location of heavy rain remains challenging, especially with climate change and the complex terrain of rural areas," said Meng Gao, a specialist in climate modelling at Hong Kong Baptist University. Floods on Monday in the central province of Henan killed three people, with five missing after more than 220 mm of rain fell on two rural towns in three hours, state broadcaster CCTV said. — Reuters

Thousands evacuated as flood hits China

BEIJING: Nearly 70,000 people in southern China have been evacuated after heavy flooding caused by Typhoon Wutip, Chinese state media reported on Wednesday. Vast areas of Zhaoqing city in Guangdong province were submerged, with floodwaters inundating shopfronts and covering roads. Rescuers pushed stranded cars out of the water and used dinghies to transport residents to safety. The flooding had affected 183,000 residents in Zhaoqing's Huaiji county, with the city mobilising more than 10,000 rescue personnel, state media outlet Xinhua reported. The flooding affected much of Guangdong province and the neighbouring Guangxi region. Footage showed rescuers in Guangxi dragging a rubber boat crammed with people through knee-deep water as heavy rain continued to fall. Typhoon Wutip, China's first typhoon of the year, made landfall on the island province of Hainan last Friday, before moving to Guangdong on Saturday. It brought winds gusting up to 128 kilometres per hour before weakening to a severe tropical storm at the weekend. Rainfall in some areas had surpassed 100 millimetres, according to the China Meteorological Administration. — AFP
