Siddaramaiah meets Rajnath; seeks defence corridors, land transfer and IAF air show for Dasara

Time of India6 hours ago
Bengaluru: A delegation led by chief minister
Siddaramaiah
, his deputy DK Shivakumar and some cabinet colleagues met Union defence minister
Rajnath Singh
Wednesday and sought central support for a wide range of proposals — from setting up two defence industrial corridors and securing defence land for major infrastructure work in Bengaluru, to hosting an
Indian Air Force
(IAF) air show during this year's Mysuru Dasara celebrations.
In a letter to Singh, Siddaramaiah urged the Centre to establish a defence industrial corridor each in North and South Karnataka, like those announced in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in 2018.
While requesting "similar support", Siddaramaiah, citing the state's strong aerospace base, wrote: "The proposed corridors will leverage this existing ecosystem and infrastructure, further cementing Karnataka's reputation as the defence capital of India."

Karnataka contributes 67% of India's aircraft and helicopter production and 25% of the aircraft and spacecraft industry, he said. The corridors would aid the 'Make in India' initiative, strengthen industry-academia ties, and create skilled jobs.
Siddaramaiah also detailed the industrial capabilities of Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Vijayapura in the north — home to major firms and the country's first precision manufacturing SEZ — and South Karnataka, which includes HAL's headquarters, TASL's C130 assembly line, and a hi-tech aerospace park in Devanahalli.

Siddaramaiah also requested the defence ministry to expedite transfer of land for three Bengaluru infrastructure projects: Twin tunnel project from Hebbal to Silk Board, a link road to Sarovara Layout, and Phase-3 of Namma Metro at Goraguntepalya. For the tunnel project, he wrote, "A vital ramp near Hebbal necessitates 2 acres of defence land, previously part of the Hebbal Defence Dairy Farm."
The link road requires 6 acres, while 7 acres of defence land is needed for the Metro corridor.
"The construction… will give huge benefit to the public, as it would solve long pending traffic issues at Goraguntepalya junction," he noted.
Siddaramaiah also invited IAF to conduct aerobatic displays during Mysuru Dasara. "I request an aerial display by Surya Kiran, Sarang and other aerobatic teams," he wrote, recalling the public enthusiasm during similar shows in 2017, 2019, and 2023. "Like every year, programmes are being planned to showcase the rich cultural heritage and tradition of Karnataka. In this context, the state government intends to organise an air show as part of the Dasara celebrations in Mysuru," he wrote.

Janaki film row: CBFC limits cuts to 2 in Suresh Gopi's film, producers agree

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Wednesday said it was willing to revise its earlier demand for 96 cuts in the Malayalam film 'JSK: Janaki v/s State of Kerala' to just two cuts, which the producers of the film agreed to, marking the end of a three-week legal tussle. Suresh Gopi The film, starring Union minister of state and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameshwaran in the lead roles, tells the story of a rape survivor fighting for justice. CBFC had objected to the name 'Janaki' in the title as well as the protagonist's name, claiming it refers to the Hindu goddess and that its usage in a film about sexual violence would offend religious sentiments. During the hearing of the case in the Kerala high court, CBFC counsel said that it was ready to grant the producers a censor certificate if they made two changes — one, the film's title be changed to 'Janaki V v/s state of Kerala' indicating the character's initials and two, the name Janaki be muted in two scenes in the film. The producers agreed to the changes during the hearing. Advocate Haris Beeran, appearing for the producers, told reporters that his client agreed to the changes suggested by CBFC as they were facing mounting financial losses due to the delay in the release of the film. 'This is a case that we can win 100% on appeal. But, the producers have taken a commercial call. They are facing financial losses due to the delay in the film's release. They also have an OTT deal that they have to adhere to. That's why, they have agreed to make the changes. The high court has ordered CBFC to grant the censor certificate within three days of re-submission of the application. So hopefully, the film can release by next Friday,' Beeran told reporters. The Censor Board had earlier refused to grant certification unless the title was changed, citing potential religious sensitivity, as 'Janaki' is also an alternative name for the Hindu goddess Sita. Pravin Narayanan, the film's director, said that they would attempt to make the changes and re-submit the application for censor certificate within the next two days. 'We have reached an amicable solution. As an artiste, it's difficult to make such changes, but somewhere, we will have to compromise,' he said.

Shivraj Chouhan to chair high-level meet on cotton crisis in Coimbatore

Chennai: In a significant move to address the ongoing crisis in cotton cultivation, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan will chair a high-level meeting in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Friday. The meeting will focus on strategies to enhance cotton productivity, tackle viral infestations, and ensure the availability of high-quality seeds to farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare stated that the meeting would bring together a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including cotton farmers, scientists, agriculture ministers from cotton-growing states, senior government officials, representatives from the cotton industry, and agricultural universities. 'Cotton production in India has been steadily declining, mainly due to the TSV virus affecting BT cotton,' Minister Chouhan said in a video message ahead of the meeting. He emphasised that the purpose of the gathering is to conduct an in-depth discussion on boosting productivity, reducing input costs, and developing high-quality, climate-resilient seed varieties. 'This meeting aims to create a practical and sustainable roadmap for the revival of cotton cultivation in the country,' he said. Chouhan reiterated the Centre's strong commitment to improving the welfare of farmers. 'It is our firm resolve to enhance cotton production and uplift the livelihoods of our cotton-growing brothers and sisters. The challenges we face can only be overcome through collective effort,' he noted. To ensure wider participation and gather inputs from the grassroots, the Ministry has also launched a toll-free helpline -- 1800 180 1551 -- inviting cotton farmers from across the country to share their suggestions, experiences, and concerns. The minister assured that all inputs received through the helpline would be taken seriously and considered in policy formulation. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10.00 a.m. on July 11 and is expected to witness the active participation of senior officials, top scientists, and policy-makers, including the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Issuing a heartfelt appeal to the farming community, Chouhan said, 'Together, we will overcome this challenge and bring about a revival in cotton production in India. Your insights will help shape policies that are rooted in real-world challenges.' The meeting in Coimbatore is seen as a critical step towards restoring the health of India's cotton sector and ensuring long-term sustainability for millions of farmers who depend on it.

Go for IT companies with unique business model; not largecap and me-too midcap IT stocks: Dipan Mehta

Dipan Mehta , Director, Elixir Equities , suggests that the IT sector's future lies in companies with unique business models. He highlights smallcap firms like Newgen and Aurionpro as potential winners. GIS companies and Genesys are also mentioned as interesting prospects. Persistent Systems and Coforge are noted for their aggressive strategies. Mehta believes largecap and me-too midcap IT stocks may not offer significant returns, going forward. We all know that this earning season will not come out with a good set of numbers. But if Accenture numbers are anything to go by, is there light at the end of the tunnel because it is not like this is going to be a dark tunnel for the rest of our life? Dipan Mehta: I think that what has happened is that basically there is a secular slowdown in the entire IT industry. The business model is such that they are going to be just about providing application, development, management, and the entire industry has moved to products and platforms. So, again, there is a structural issue in the Indian IT industry and I was quite hopeful that AI would be a trigger for higher growth but certainly that does not appear to be so. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lana Green Is Retiring - Her Final Jewelry Pieces Are 80% Off Design Craft Weekly Read More Undo In fact, they may get disrupted because of artificial intelligence. And if you look at the 5-10-year track records, these companies at the end of the day have had high single-digit growth despite rupee depreciation. So, what is going to change it? I really do not know. The way the spend is happening in the tech industry, more and more is towards hardware, especially servers of the type that Nvidia makes or chips that Nvidia makes; more investment into data centres, storage capacity; and more investment into platforms and products. Software as a service is the new buzz word. It is a way to decrease cost and none of the traditional Indian IT companies are in that particular space. So, they are going to get disrupted and we are going to see further slowdown there. So, my view remains extremely negative. Sure, there could be rallies. A surprising quarter with 15-20% growth is possible, but the long-term trajectory is very slow. Even though you are largely negative when it comes to this sector, over the last couple of weeks, during sector churn, it has emerged positive for a couple of days. We have seen that the midcap end has done much better than the largecaps. If at all you had to play IT and if you are seeing any hope in this sector, do you believe it could come from the midcap end? Dipan Mehta: No. In fact, it has to come from companies which have a differentiated business model and which are more into products and platforms. Traditionally we had companies like Oracle and Ramco which were into products. There was Nucleus Software also but those have not done as well. Companies like Newgen, Aurionpro, merit a mention over here, usually disclosure, we and our clients may be invested in them, and then there are GIS companies which are also there, as is Genesys, which is quite interesting, at the right place at the right time. Beyond that, there could be a few IT companies like Persistent Systems, or a Coforge, which are aggressive and which are in the right space. They may do well, but at the end of the day, the largecap IT stocks and a whole host of midcap IT stocks, which are doing a me-too type of a business, are not going to give great returns going forward.
