Leona stays driven despite lack of funding
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian racer Leona Chin remains in high spirits despite missing out on her chance to get another podium in the Hyundai N Cup One-Make in China.
Leona finished second in the opening round at the Zhuhai International Circuit two weeks ago.
While others will be shifting their focus to the next race in Chengdu from July 12-23, the 38-year-old Leona has to sit out due to a lack of sponsorship.
A gutted Leona is keeping her chin up and will continue to let her performance on the track do the talking.
"I couldn't secure a sponsor in time to compete in the race this weekend in Chengdu. It's disappointing, especially after the momentum from Zhuhai,' said Leona.
"But I'll keep pushing forward and preparing for the next opportunity. The support from the fans and the Malaysian motorsport community means the world to me."
In Zhuhai, Leona faced intense weather challenges and competition from a field of 20 drivers from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan but still finished second.
"The most challenging part of the race was the weather and brake issues, which I had midway through the race, and that made it hard to keep the pace," she said.
"But I pushed through. No matter the challenge, I'm committed to giving my best and flying the Malaysian flag high.
Leona, the only female driver on the grid at the 12 Hours of Sepang in March, made a strong impression by clinching victory in the GTC category.
She now gets her chance to be racing at the iconic circuit in front of her home crowd once again when she competes in the Malaysian Touring Car Championship from July 25-27.
"For now, my focus is on the Malaysian meet. I'm excited to be back racing on home ground again," she said.

Commercial Drivers Face License Suspension Pending Crash Probe
Commercial vehicle drivers, including those operating buses, trucks, lorries, and vans, who are involved in accidents will now face immediate suspension of their Public Service Vehicle (PSV) or Goods Driving Licence (GDL) pending the completion of accident investigations. This stringent new measure was announced today by the Road Transport Department (RTD) in a concerted effort to curb the alarming rise in commercial vehicle-related accidents on Malaysian highways. The directive means that any driver holding a PSV license (required for passenger vehicles like buses) or a GDL license (mandatory for goods vehicles such as trucks, lorries, and vans) will have their credentials temporarily revoked as soon as their involvement in an accident is confirmed. The suspension will remain in effect throughout the entire duration of the official investigation into the incident, ensuring a period of enforced non-operation for the drivers in question. This move underscores the RTD's escalating concern over the increasing frequency and severity of crashes involving heavy and commercial vehicles, which often lead to significant casualties and traffic disruptions. By immediately suspending licenses, the department aims to enforce stricter accountability among commercial drivers and their employers. While the move could cause inconvenience to commercial vehicle operators but the implementation is necessary given high number of road accidents that often lead to fatality. Related
