Jamie McGrath scores on Hibernian debut in first-leg draw at Midtjylland
McGrath spotted a gap at the near post as the home goalkeeper awaited a cross after the Republic of Ireland international had won a free-kick on the left wing.
His effort was clawed out from behind the line as Hibs delighted more than 1,000 noisy away fans following a bright start.
Hibs were 18 minutes from claiming an away win but Aral Simsir curled home from a 25-yard free-kick to leave the tie all square ahead of next Thursday's second leg at Easter Road.
Gray's side started brightly in Herning and Martin Boyle came close on several occasions before McGrath's early opener.
Boyle was close to connecting with Chris Cadden's cross, then saw a shot deflected past the post before heading wide from a glorious chance from Dylan Levitt's delivery.
Hibs were soon in front and then survived a series of set-pieces before Boyle forced an error in the home defence that led to Kieron Bowie having a shot blocked from 10 yards out.
Goalkeeper Jordan Smith was untroubled in the first half but Hibs had a let-off when Franculino Dju blazed over from 15 yards as the visiting defence backtracked amid a counter-attack.
Boyle thought he had put Hibs two ahead in the 41st minute when he fired inside the goalkeeper's near post but he was half a yard offside when Bowie played him through.
Josh Mulligan tried to emulate McGrath's debut goal 10 minutes into the second half but the former Dundee midfielder saw his 25-yard strike held.
Smith showed adept handling to deal with two long-range efforts and saw Pedro Bravo's curling shot deflected just wide as Hibs continued to frustrate last year's Danish league runners-up.
But the hosts got their breakthrough after Jack Iredale was booked for a trip 25 yards from his goal. Simsir curled the free-kick over the wall and into the top corner.
Boyle had a half chance to put Hibs back in front following good work from Mulligan but the forward was quickly crowded out and his shot was blocked.
Smith soon kept Hibs level with a close-range stop from Kevin Mbabu, the former Newcastle player who had a loan spell with Rangers in 2015 but failed to make an appearance for the Light Blues.
There were four bookings in the bad-tempered closing stages as Hibs held on to take a positive result back to Edinburgh.

Alan Shearer offers damning verdict on Man Utd's transfer plan despite spending £133.5m
Manchester United have only made two major signings this summer and Alan Shearer believes they are well short of challenging for Europe with their current squad Alan Shearer claims Manchester United are "four top players away from challenging for the top six" despite the Red Devils spending more than £130million on the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Ruben Amorim presided over a horror campaign last term as United finished 15th in the Premier League, and marked improvements are now being demanded after a summer on the training pitch and some shrewd recruitment. The club have been keen to bolster their misfiring attack this summer, alongside Mbeumo and Cunha, Diego Leon has been added, but there are several issues that still exist within the United squad and Shearer claims they have a number of problems areas to address before they can even think about trying to qualify for the Europa League. United are yet to add a No 9 given the struggles experienced by the likes of Rasmus Hojlund. No new wing-backs have come in despite Amorim playing a 3-4-3 formation and they continue to persevere with Andre Onana in goal. Shearer told Betfair: "Last year was a disaster for Man United. It will be better than that this season I've no doubt, but how much better will depend on how much business they do between now and the end of the transfer window. "There's no doubt they need a top-class centre-forward which would go well with Cunha and Mbuemo so they've still got business to do and it depends on what quality they bring in. Even with just Cunha and Mbuemo, there's no doubt they'll improve on last season. As I said, they're still three, maybe four top players away from challenging for the top six." Amorim has claimed that, should he begin the season against Arsenal in mid-August with his current squad then he would be happy. However concerns remain around United, who ended up being 24 points off the Champions League spots and 42 off champions Liverpool. Shearer has also been quick to point out that Mbeumo, one of their major recruits, will leave midseason to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations. That will place more pressure on United's depth. He said: "Mbuemo will likely be going to AFCON, but you know that when you sign these players. You just have to get on with it and accept it. He'll be a big player for Man United so to be without him for that amount of time will hurt him and Man United but other clubs will have the same problem." United have reportedly had a loan offer for Emi Martinez turned down. Aston Villa have also made it clear that Ollie Watkins is not for sale. Earlier in the summer Liam Delap, who was on the club's radar, picked a move to Chelsea ahead of a switch to Manchester.

Jurgen Klopp put down a marker ahead of his first full season as Liverpool head coach by kicking a Reds player off a pre-season tour to the United States for tardiness Jurgen Klopp once froze out an international defender following a mysterious falling out ahead of his first full season as Liverpool boss. Mamadou Sakho, an £18million signing from Paris Saint-Germain, had become a key member of the squad during the 2015/16 campaign, which saw the sacked Brendan Rodgers replaced by Klopp. However, the Frenchman was sidelined amid a doping investigation - from which he was later exonerated and awarded compensation - resulting in him missing the Europa League final defeat by Sevilla and Euro 2016, hosted by France. Sakho was cleared to resume his career that summer and travelled with the Reds squad to the United States for a pre-season tour. However, that proved to be the beginning of the end of his Liverpool career after he was accused of being late for a flight, a team meal and a treatment session. Klopp explained: 'I thought maybe it made sense for him to fly home to Liverpool and after eight or 10 days, when we come back, we can talk about it. It's not that serious. 'He nearly missed the departure of the plane, he missed a session and was late for a meal. We have some rules and we have to respect them. If somebody doesn't respect it or somebody gives me the feeling he is not respecting it, then I have to react, that's all. 'It is private how he reacted. But we had no argument. You cannot argue when only one person is speaking. That's all. I think missed a session is missed a session. Even injured players have sessions.' As the season began, Sakho remained banished from the first team, training instead with the under-23 squad. Frustrated at his situation, Sakho took to his Snapchat account at 3am one morning to insist he was fit to play. He posted: 'Now it's three weeks I am fit to play games. They don't want me to play with segonde (segondo, U23s) team lol. Still working hard like Scouse Soldier! Still not talking cos I want to speak on the pitch....I will speak soon for the people who support me and don't understand the situation (emoji). 'Still happy to live in my Liverpool Country (emoji) with my family, hope to have chance to play soon to give my best like I try to always do! I accept my situation but I can't accept the fans deserve to know the true! Thanks for your support (emoji) 6 six months stay quiet. Have good night everybody! You'll never walk alone! (emoji).' Speaking in France, Sakho acknowledged his tardiness to Canal Football Club, saying: 'It is true that I turned up late. There was a rule that I should have observed. I do not at all see myself as above the rules, I respect everyone. 'I paid my fine, I was sanctioned, I apologised to my team-mates and my manager. Aside from that… I do not want to go into the controversies.' Sakho, now 35 and playing his football in Georgia, would eventually leave Liverpool, initially on loan, for Crystal Palace in 2017. Speaking earlier this summer, nine years after his spat with Klopp, Sakho spoke of his respect for the German but insisted all was not as it seemed. He told the Liverpool Echo: 'Good relationship because I'm not a negative man. I always respect. I like his type of football.' Addressing the lateness he was sent home for and his subsequent Snapchat message, Sakho added: 'Seriously, because a player is late to eat, the time's 7.15 and he comes at 7.18, now he leaves the club? Come on. 'What I wrote (on Snapchat) was the truth. But the truth always takes the stairs and the lie takes the elevator. You have football that people see, and you have few things inside but they cannot talk about it. So I always keep it for me as a man and that's it. 'I never talk and I would not speak for the moment because it's not important. I really enjoy my time in Liverpool. I will speak about it one day, of course. Of course one day I will speak. But not now, it is not the right moment.'
