L.A. Instagram influencer arrested in connection with fatal July 4 car crash
Summer Wheaton, 33, surrendered to the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station on Monday, the local sheriff's office said in a statement.
She was booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or above causing bodily injury.
An arrest warrant was obtained for her detention following the completion of an investigation into the July 4 crash on the 21900 block of the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
According to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department statement released following the crash, a preliminary investigation showed that a 2019 Mercedes-Benz, later confirmed to have been driven by Wheaton, had crossed the center median and collided head-on with a 2020 Cadillac traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 44-year-old Martin Okeke, was killed in the crash.
The Cadillac's passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Wheaton has more than 100,000 followers on Instagram where she posts fashion and workout photos.
According to her website, she is a public speaker and wellness advocate as well as the founder of two startups and a nonprofit organization "dedicated to fostering self-discovery, self-empowerment and individual wellness."

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman released from jail, charges dropped after arrest on weapons charges
Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman was released from a Los Angeles County jail Monday afternoon, three days after he was arrested on weapons charges. Per court records obtained by multiple outlets, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman declined to pursue charges. Perryman made an appearance at Chargers facilities Monday evening. Perryman's teammate Daiyan Henley shared video of his appearance on Instagram. Per the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies pulled Perryman over Friday night for vehicle code violations. Deputies say that they searched Perryman's vehicle and found five firearms, two of which were "assault style rifles." "On August 1, 2025, at 9:30 p.m., South Los Angeles Station deputies conducted a traffic stop on Los Angeles Chargers football player Denzel Perryman, 32, for vehicle code violations," a statement from the LACSD reads. "During the traffic stop deputies discovered five firearms in Mr. Perryman's vehicle, two of which were assault style rifles. He was arrested and booked on weapons violation charges and was cooperative with deputies." It's not clear what prompted the search of Perryman's car. Per the LACSD, the weapons resulted in multiple weapons violations. Perryman was detained and held without bail at the South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station. He remained in custody over the weekend and was scheduled for a hearing at an Inglewood courthouse Tuesday morning. But prosecutors declined to pursue charges, and Perryman was released from custody Monday afternoon. Perryman's agent Ron Butler provided a statement to The Athletic Monday night. 'We're grateful the matter has been resolved,' Butler said, via a statement to The Athletic. 'At this time, Denzel is focused on getting back to his family and teammates. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters Monday that he visited Perryman in jail on Sunday. 'He was in good spirits,' Harbaugh said. 'I love Denzel. He's always done right. He's never been in trouble. Got a beautiful family, and we're just letting the due process play out.' Perryman, 32, is a 10-season NFL veteran. He played his first six seasons with the Chargers before stints with the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans. He returned to the Chargers in 2024 and played in and started 11 games. A Pro Bowl selection in 2021, Perryman projects to play a key role with the Chargers inside linebacker corps this season and is listed as a starter on the Chargers depth chart.

Greg Abbott ordered the arrest Monday of House Democrats after they fled the state before a vote could be taken on proposed redistricting maps. The Democratic lawmakers fled to Illinois, New York and Massachusetts to prevent a quorum Monday afternoon and the advancement of voter maps that would benefit Republicans in next year's midterm elections. "Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty to Texans," Abbott, a Republican, said in a statement. "By fleeing the state, Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief. There are consequences for dereliction of duty." "I ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest and return to the House chamber any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans," Abbott continued. "This order will remain in effect until all missing Democrat House members are accounted for and brought to the Texas Capitol." On Monday, Texas House Republicans voted 85-to-6, authorizing the House sergeant-at-arms to arrest Democrats who fled the state in protest and prevented a quorum. According to the Texas Constitution, two-thirds of the state House must be present to conduct legislative business. The proposed congressional redistricting map, released last month, could add five new GOP congressional seats. The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas claims the maps were "designed to dilute the voting power of communities of color." In addition to facing arrest, the missing House members also face $500 daily fines for breaking quorum. Abbott said he will investigate any Democrat who solicits funds to support their effort. "Reports indicate that many absentee Texas House Democrats have solicited or received funds to evade conducting legislative business and casting votes. Under the Texas Penal Code, any of those Democrats who solicit, accept or agree to accept such funds to assist in the violation of legislative duties or for purposes of skipping a vote may have violated bribery laws," Abbott said. "Also, it could be a bribery violation for any other person who offers, provides or agrees to provide such funds to fleeing Democrat House members." The Texas House Democratic Caucus issued their response Monday to Abbott's threat, saying, "Come and take it." Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu told reporters in Illinois that it was within their moral responsibility to leave the state. "We're not here to have fun. We're not here because it is easy, and we did not make the decision to come here today lightly," Wu said. "But we come here today with absolute moral clarity that this is absolutely the right thing to do to protect the people of the state of Texas." The Texas House is scheduled to reconvene Tuesday at 1 p.m., local time. The current special session is scheduled to end on Aug. 19. Texas state Rep. John Bucy said Democrats are "not running away" but instead "running into the fight." "Look, I didn't run for office to walk out of the Capitol, but I also didn't run for office to stand by while democracy is stolen in broad daylight," Bucy said from Illinois. "Texas Democrats broke quorum because sometimes, the only way to uphold your oath is to refuse to play along with a rigged game."
