Clemson continues to climb national polls, near consensus Top 5 team in college baseball
Clemson baseball continues to surge in the national spotlight, moving up to No. 2 in the latest Perfect Game rankings following a 3-1 week that included another ACC series win. The Tigers (33-6, 11-4 ACC) also rose one spot in the D1Baseball poll, now sitting at No. 3 nationally.
The latest shuffle comes after a rough week for a couple of Top 5 teams, including LSU, which went 1-3. Texas, now 29-5, holds onto the No. 1 spot across all three major polls released Monday morning.
While Perfect Game and D1Baseball rewarded Clemson for its consistency, Baseball America moved the Tigers down one slot to No. 6. The drop wasn't performance-based, though. 'Clemson dropped one spot in the rankings due to poll movement, but there's no sign of slippage on the field,' Baseball America noted. Clemson handled Stanford in Week 9, winning its midweek game and taking two of three from a quality Cardinal team that's spent time in the rankings this year.
Aidan Knaak set the pace in the series opener, tossing six strong innings with just two hits, one run, and six strikeouts. Jacob Jarrell continued his home run streak with two more long balls to bring his team-leading total to nine, and Lucas Mahlstedt closed the series win with a three-inning save — his 12th of the year — bolstering his postseason honors case.
Up next, the Tigers return home to host No. 17 Louisville, with the series set to begin Thursday at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are coming off a series loss at NC State but earned a dramatic extra-innings win over Kentucky earlier in the week.
Clemson continues to make noise statistically within the ACC as well. Dominic Listi ranks second in on-base percentage (.525), with Cam Cannarella sitting sixth at .486 and ranking among the top five in both walks and runs scored. Jarren Purify adds speed and grit, placing top five in stolen bases and triples.
On the mound, Knaak remains one of the league's top arms — fourth in both strikeouts (67) and wins (6), while holding opponents to a .186 average (fifth-best). Mahlstedt continues to lead the ACC in saves with 12.
Offensively, the Tigers rank fourth in the conference in runs scored (301), are first in hit-by-pitches (76), and second in walks (250). They also lead the ACC in strikeouts at the plate (334). Clemson's pitching staff has produced the second-most strikeouts (383) while sitting fourth in ERA (4.53) and limiting opponents to a .227 batting average — also fourth-best in the conference.

Clemson softball officially adds four transfers to its 2025-26 roster

Clemson softball is bolstering its roster with four new additions from the transfer portal ahead of the 2025-26 season, head coach John Rittman announced this week. The Tigers have landed Kiley Channell (FAU), Abby Dunning (Boston College), Corri Hicks (Oklahoma) and Sierra Maness (USC Upstate) as they look to build on their recent ACC Tournament title and another NCAA Super Regional run. Channell, an infielder from Keystone Heights, Florida, brings an impressive bat after two standout seasons at FAU. She earned 2025 AAC Second Team honors and was named the league's Rookie of the Year in 2024. Channell batted .330 this past season with 59 hits and 44 RBIs, and she set a school record with five hits in the game that clinched the AAC regular-season title against Tulsa. She also ranked among the nation's top doubles hitters as a freshman, finishing with 19 two-baggers in 2024. In the circle, Clemson adds a big arm in graduate transfer Abby Dunning. The Burr Ridge, Illinois native was a mainstay for Boston College, earning spots on the 2024 All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. She fanned 172 batters last season — third-most in the conference — and posted a 2.46 ERA while limiting hitters to a .207 average over 33 appearances. Dunning was also recognized on the College Sports Evaluators Preseason Top 50 Pitchers List for 2025. Behind the plate, Corri Hicks comes in from Oklahoma with two years of eligibility remaining. Hicks played in 24 games for the Sooners, including a postseason appearance where she homered in an 8-0 Norman Regional win. She wrapped up her freshman year with three home runs and showed flashes of power and run production whenever called on. Rounding out the incoming transfer group is Sierra Maness, a junior right-hander from USC Upstate. Maness was a force in the Big South, earning First Team All-Conference honors this spring after striking out 120 batters in 166 innings. Over two years with the Spartans, she notched 34 wins, three saves and 244 total strikeouts with a career ERA of 2.34. The new transfers will join a core group of 13 returners who helped guide Clemson to its first ACC Tournament crown and third Super Regional berth in the past four seasons. They'll also be part of a large 2025-26 signing class that includes seven incoming freshmen: Sarah Breaux, Sophie Burmeister, Keira Crosby, Lexie Hames, Maddie Johnson, Mac Pavese and Sarah Rocheleau. With a mix of experienced talent and young prospects, Rittman and the Tigers look poised to stay in the national conversation and build on the momentum they've created in recent years. Gleyber Torres gushes over Tigers fans making him an All-Star starter after messy Yankees exit

Gleyber Torres seems to be enjoying himself with his new team in Detroit. The former Yankee had a sour exit from The Bronx after struggling on the field, clashing with the organization and losing much of his support from fans. Now, the 28-year-old is the everyday second baseman for the American League's top team and just received an All-Star starter nod for the first time in his career. 4 Gleyber Torres spent his entire MLB career with the Yankees before signing with the Tigers this season. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 4 Torres has had a resurgent season with Detroit. Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images 'To all fans: I want to express my gratitude for all the support you have given me during this season,' Torres posted on X. 'I've never felt that support more strongly than now after the starting position players have been announced for the 2025 All-Star Game. I'm so proud to have been voted the starting second baseman for the American League All-Star team by you, the fans.' After Torres' seven-year Yankees stint came to an end, general manager Brian Cashman told YES Network that he wanted Torres to move to third base so Jazz Chisholm Jr. could play second, but Torres was 'unwilling' to make the switch. 'I feel I deserve to be with an organization that wants me,' Torres told The Post's Dan Martin during spring training. 'I'm here now and that's the reason I'm here.' Asked if he felt he was no longer wanted by the Yankees, Torres said, 'I don't know. Maybe you can ask him.' That may have been a wise choice by Torres, with the fact that he's now getting recognition as the AL's top second baseman by way of fan voting and is a top contributor on what some consider to be the best team in MLB. 4 Torres hits an RBI single against the Orioles. AP While Torres fell out of favor with many Yankees figures and fans, Detroit seems to have welcomed him with open arms. Tigers fans stuffed the ballot boxes for their players, as Torres is one of three starters for Detroit in the All-Star Game — tied with the Dodgers for the most of any single team. Rising superstar Riley Greene and — perhaps the league's best comeback story — Javier Báez were the Tigers' other starting selections. 4 Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene (middle) and Javier Baez were all named starters for the AL All-Star team. Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images 'This has been a team effort, with [the fans] giving me that push, both in the good times as well as the difficult ones,' Torres continued in his social media post. 'I'm also thankful for the support from my manager, my coaches and teammates who, together with the rest of the staff, have made this an extremely exciting 2025 season with the Detroit Tigers. 'When I take the field on July 15th, all of you will be there with me.' Torres is hitting a career-high .279 with nine home runs and 43 RBI. His OPS sat at .811 entering Thursday's game against the Nationals. While it's his first time as a starter, Torres made the All-Star team as a reserve back-to-back years in 2018-19.

Clemson fired gymnastics coach following athletes' complaints, emails show

After a review of its gymnastics program following complaints, Clemson fired coach Amy Smith this spring for failing to ensure the safe and responsible treatment of athletes, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post. In April, just after Clemson's gymnastics team finished its season, a university employee informed athletic department staff members that an anonymous hotline had received a 'complaint regarding possible emotional/mental abuse within the gymnastics team,' according to a copy of the email obtained through a public records request. The details of the report were redacted.
