Small town dad kills family of 4 in Mother's Day weekend murder-suicide hours before son's graduation: police
The wife of a Nebraska man who is suspected of killing his entire family of four in a murder-suicide pleaded for support for her husband's mental health online just days before she and her two sons were murdered, according to a report.
Jeremy Koch, 42, stabbed and killed his wife Bailey, 41, and sons Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16, before killing himself in their rural Dawson County home, Nebraska State Patrol confirmed Saturday.
Hudson was scheduled to graduate from high school on Saturday, just hours after the family was found dead, according to News Channel Nebraska.

"May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so here we are... making you aware," Bailey reportedly wrote.
She said Jeremy first attempted suicide in 2009 and had tried to take his life multiple times.

Last year, according to Bailey, Jeremy's depression reached a fever pitch.
"Jeremy cannot get out of bed unless forced," she wrote. "By not eating or drinking, Jeremy is slowly completing suicide."
She reportedly wrote that the family's income, which came from a local landscaping business Jeremy owned, had dried up.
In March, Bailey said she woke up to Jeremy standing over her with a knife but talked him down and convinced him to get inpatient mental health care. That was the fourth time Jeremy had been hospitalized for his mental health struggles, according to the report.
She said a round of electroconvulsive therapy did not help her husband.
"It didn't work. Jeremy became a shell of himself."
"I have no pride left," she wrote at the time. "Mental illness is taking my husband from me, and I'm begging you to open your eyes and see the reality that is this society's mental health crisis."
However, Bailey reportedly said on the GoFundMe that Jeremy had been released from the hospital last week to attend Hudson's graduation.
Bailey worked as a special education teacher at Holdrege Public Schools.
"Our Holdrege school community is grieving after a tragic event that has deeply affected us all," the district reportedly said Saturday. "Our hearts are with everyone impacted."Original article source: Small town dad kills family of 4 in Mother's Day weekend murder-suicide hours before son's graduation: police

Hero cyclist, 28, killed shielding mom and children from knife-wielding madman at California train station
A beloved cyclist was allegedly stabbed to death by a knife-wielding madman after heroically stepping in to protect a mother and her children who were being harassed at a California train station. Colden Kimber, 28, was waiting at a Muni stop in San Francisco with his girlfriend on July 26 when a ranting lunatic approached a terrified family and hurled unhinged threats that prompted the 6-foot-4 New York native to courageously intervene, according to court documents obtained by KGO. 'Oh, you think you are better than me,' alleged assailant Sean Collins, 29, screamed at the mother and her two children at the Ingleside transit hub, adding, 'You are scared of me.' 5 Colden Kimber, 28, was killed on July 26 when a knife-wielding madman allegedly stabbed him in the neck. Gofundme Kimber, heading home from a lunch date, positioned himself between the frightened family and Collins when the frenzied attacker plunged a six-inch blade into the unsuspecting man's neck as he glanced toward an approaching train, court documents said. The San Francisco State University student and avid cyclist stopped moving after the 'completely and utterly unprovoked attack' as blood gushed out of his neck, officials said. 5 Police said the knifing happened at a Muni stop in Ingleside. ABC7 The Dryden native was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died following surgery, according to a GoFundMe launched by his heartbroken mother. 'There is no making sense of this and no words to convey the devastation we are feeling,' his mom, Lara Litchfield-Kimber, wrote in the fundraiser, which has since amassed over $91,000. 'He had this protective thing about him,' the grief-stricken mom told WSYR, noting her son was endearingly nicknamed a 'country moose.' 5 Police said the deadly incident was captured on surveillance camera. ABC7/Pakwan Restaurant A blood-stained Collins was arrested and charged with murder after being found just blocks from the deadly scene, where the horrific knifing was captured on surveillance cameras, according to local reports. Kimber was studying kinesiology, the science of human movement, and working at American Cyclery, where he had spent the past three years repairing and building bikes, when he was ruthlessly killed. 'I'm going to miss him for his good nature and his kind spirit, and he really lived such an exemplary life,' Bradley Woehl, owner of American Cyclery, told KGO. 5 Clothing and a shoe were left behind at the San Francisco stop where Kimber stepped in to help a terrified family. ABC7 'He was a very positive influence on myself and my staff. He is totally irreplaceable as a worker, and totally irreplaceable as a friend and person and someone who had a good influence on my life.' Kimber's love for cycling began when he took his mother's place in the New York Triathlon after she was forced to withdraw while battling breast cancer, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. 'He had never ridden a bike on a road,' Litchfield-Kimber told the outlet. 5 Kimber, a student at San Francisco State University, was an avid cyclist. Gofundme 'The bikes were the things that stuck. People would say, 'I had a Colden sighting,' because it wasn't that rare because he was always on his bike.' A memorial bike ride has since been scheduled in Kimber's honor on Sept. 7. Collins is due back in court for his arraignment on Aug. 14.

Massachusetts woman hit with five-figure medical bill after a wild bat flew into her mouth on vacation
A woman on vacation whose employee-sponsored health plan had lapsed after recently being being laid off wound up with over $20,000 in medical bills after a bat flew into her mouth. Erica Kahn, 33, was visiting Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona last August when the horror encounter with the winged mammal took place. 3 Erica Khan is now rabies-free, but still struggling to get out from under nearly $20,000 in medical bills after a horrific encounter with a wild bat. ekahn92/Instagram The former biomedical engineer noticed a number of bats flying around while she was outside taking pictures of the night sky, but didn't think much of it. That is, until one got too close for comfort, winding up trapped between her camera and face. When she screamed in terror, an unknown part of the bat wound up in her mouth for a few seconds. Her father, a physician who had been traveling with her, said she should immediately start a course of rabies treatments, even though she wasn't sure if she had been bitten. She quickly went online to purchase a medical insurance plan before going to a hospital in Flagstaff to begin treatments — under the impression it would cover her two-week course of rabies shots, which she received at clinics in Arizona, Massachusetts and Colorado, KFF reported. But her biggest shock of all came when the bill arrived, showing she owed $20,749 between the four facilities — for treatment including four doses of the rabies vaccines and three shots of immunoglobulin to increase antibodies against the virus, which is fatal if left untreated. 3 Bats account for around 33% of the 4,000 animal rabies cases reported in the US each year. If left untreated, the rabies virus is fatal to humans. Ivan Kuzmin – She didn't realize the insurance plan she had purchased a day before starting treatment required a 30-day waiting period before coverage would kick in, an explanation-of-benefits letter she got in the mail grimly explained. 'I thought it must have been a mistake,' she told the outlet. 'I guess I was naive.' 3 Khan had been traveling with her father, a physician, who urged her to seek out rabies treatments after a bat flew into her mouth while she was taking pictures at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona. GoFundMe After being laid off from her engineer position the previous month, she opted against keeping her insurance under COBRA for $650 a month, rolling the dice she would not wind up facing an unexpected medical emergency. Khan told the outlet she's since gotten a new job and once again has health insurance. She's negotiated some of the bills down a bit, but says she still owed more than $19,000 for her treatments — which she said she plans to continue appealing. Despite her horrifying encounter with wildlife — ripped from the stuff of nightmares — Khan said it hasn't put a damper on her love for the great outdoors. 'I know what bats taste like now. It's an earthy, sweet kind of flavor,' she joked to the outlet. 'It's actually a pretty funny story — if it weren't for the horrible medical bill that came with it.' Around 4,000 animal rabies cases are reported each year in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — with less than 10 people dying of the virus per annum. More than 90% occur in animals like skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats. Bats account for the highest proportion of reported animal rabies cases, at 33%.
