IT layoffs cloud recovery hopes as consumption firms brace for slowdown

Economic Times14 hours ago
India's consumption-driven recovery may face fresh headwinds as rising job cuts in the information technology (IT) sector trigger concerns over discretionary spending, reported TOI.
With Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently confirming over 12,000 layoffs and industry body Nasscom indicating more job losses ahead, consumer-facing companies are preparing for a possible slowdown in demand, particularly for apparel, fashion, electronics, and other non-essentials.
The tech sector, a key employer of young professionals, plays a significant role in driving household expenditure. A downturn in this segment could have a spillover effect on wider consumption trends, experts said. While some sectors such as packaged goods and jewellery may be more resilient, others are already signalling caution. 'Sustained consumption growth will depend on economic stability and job security,' Joy Alukkas, CMD at Joyalukkas Group, told The Times of India. However, he added that the jewellery segment may see limited impact due to the cultural and investment value Indians associate with gold.Nitin Bhatt, technology sector leader at EY India, noted that IT hiring remains weak. 'Even at a slower rate, the industry added around 1.2 lakh jobs in FY25, but the outlook for FY26 is subdued,' he said.
Uneven recovery and cautious sentiment
Though lower inflation, interest rate reductions, and recent tax reforms have created a base for consumption revival, company results suggest the recovery is still in early stages. Colgate-Palmolive, for instance, flagged 'tough' operating conditions in its Q1 FY26 earnings call, underlining the pressure on rural and urban demand alike, as per the TOI report.
In the fashion and lifestyle segment, consumer caution is evident. Akhil Jain, CEO and MD of Madame, said that while easing inflation and tax breaks offered some support, full-price retail demand remains irregular. 'Job uncertainty in sectors like IT does impact consumption, particularly in categories like fashion,' Jain said.Personal care players are also monitoring sentiment closely. Sunil Agarwal, chairman of RSH Global, which owns Joy Personal Care, observed early signs of cautious spending. 'The IT layoff trend has created some unease in consumer sentiment,' he said. Agarwal added that the upcoming festive season will be the real test of how demand shapes up in the wake of employment-related anxieties. With employment concerns mounting in a sector that fuels significant urban spending, companies across discretionary categories remain watchful as they head into the crucial second half of the fiscal year.

Builders seek hassle-free access to M Sand after state govt finalises SOP for policy

1 2 Pune: Builders have urged state govt to ensure smooth access, availability, and transportation of manufactured sand (M Sand) after the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the M Sand policy was finalised last week. The move, announced by revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on July 29, aims to eliminate river sand mining across the state. While developers welcomed the policy, they said its success hinges on quick permissions, reliable supply chains, and improved infrastructure, especially in rural areas. "If M Sand is made easily accessible even in remote regions, reliance on river sand will naturally decline," a developer told TOI, choosing anonymity. They further recommended that the state maintain a verified list of approved manufacturers so that builders can source M Sand from nearby locations more efficiently. "Govt must ensure that M Sand is available across all regions, including rural belts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Genius for Learning Languages [See Why] Talkpal AI Undo A list of verified suppliers and simplified transport norms will reduce costs and delays," a Credai core committee member told TOI. The committee also suggested deploying mobile testing labs and training centres for contractors in remote areas to ensure quality and promote awareness. Credai Pune president Manish Jain said the construction sector is committed to using sustainable alternatives like M Sand — a type of fine aggregate produced by crushing hard rocks such as granite. "M Sand is a robust and eco-friendly substitute for river sand. Due to its controlled manufacturing process, it offers consistent grain size and quality, making it ideal for concrete and plastering," Jain said. Builder Kapil Gandhi noted that M Sand is produced using advanced technology in a controlled environment. "River sand hasn't been used in urban areas for decades. M Sand is sent to labs for testing, and each project receives a specific mix-design report based on raw material, water quality, and local conditions. Earlier issues with plaster quality were resolved through research and development. The final product is engineered to meet high standards," he explained. Bharat Agarwal, president of the National Real Estate Development Council (Naredco), supported the ban on river sand mining, citing the damage it causes to riverbeds and aquatic ecosystems. "M Sand is a sustainable and widely accepted alternative. We urge govt to grant more licenses for M Sand units, especially as real estate activity across Maharashtra is surging," he said. Agarwal also recommended simplifying royalty payments and expediting environmental clearances for mining. "Approvals should be routed through an automatic system to avoid bottlenecks," he said. According to a govt resolution (GR) issued by the revenue department in May this year, public and private land parcels suitable for M Sand units will be listed for auction on the 'Mahakhanij' portal, stated officials. Applicants must submit a registered undertaking, along with approvals such as the Pollution Control Board's 'Consent to Establish' and a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the local planning authority. Developers said the SOP is a strong policy initiative but called for swift on-ground execution, easier logistics, and region-wide availability to ensure a smooth transition from river sand to M Sand. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE M-SAND SOP > M Sand is manufactured by crushing hard stone into sand-sized particles > Existing quarry leaseholders can apply through the Mahakhanij portal for M Sand production > The first 50 projects in each district are eligible for concessions from the revenue and industries departments > Unit holders must apply separately for concessions and establish units within six months > 'Consent to Operate' from the Pollution Control Board is mandatory before production begins > A secondary transport permit is required for M Sand sale and transport > Deputy collector to serve as nodal officer for implementation

Retired TCS employee duped of Rs 3 crore by share trading fraudsters

Mumbai: A 58-year-old retired TCS executive lodged a complaint after being duped of almost Rs 3 crore from cyber fraudsters in an online scam. Impersonating officials of a reputed share trading platform, the fraudsters lured him twice and duped him of Rs 2.6 crore. The victim, a resident of Navroz Bagh in Lalbaug, detailed how he was lured through deceptive advertisements on Facebook and tricked over a span of two months. According to the complaint, the victim, who dabbled in stock trading for the past five years, came across an advertisement for "Kuvera Finance" while browsing Facebook on June 10. On clicking the link, he was added to a WhatsApp group named "K21 - Kuvera Appha Club - Learn & Grow Your Wealth." The group was allegedly moderated by Rutuja Lad, who claimed to be a manager at Kuvera Finance, and Neelabh Sanyal, who posed as an investment advisor. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The fraudsters convinced the victim to open a "Kuvera Fast Trade Account" through a link they provided. Under their guidance, he began transferring funds into various bank accounts, which included names like Sweet and Salt, Yash Traders, Axiopay Infotech Pvt. Ltd, and Sahil Enterprises, among others. Over a period of weeks, he was duped into transferring Rs 56.2 lakh under the pretext of stock investments that were displayed as virtual profits on fake trading apps. In a parallel operation, the victim encountered another fraudulent scheme through a Facebook advertisement for UTI AMC. This led him to a WhatsApp group named "UTI Capital Storm," where individuals identified as Sanya Kapoor and Imtaiazur Rahman introduced themselves as managers of UTI Mutual Fund. They used similar tactics, guiding the victim to invest by sending funds to accounts under names like Prudent Services Ltd, A.K. Traders, Harish Kumar, Sri Kalai Enterprise, Brightview Technologies, Hasan Creation, and Prince Corporation. Between June 16 and July 29, the victim transferred an additional Rs 2 crore to these accounts. The fraudsters repeatedly showed inflated profits on virtual dashboards but refused to allow withdrawals, citing fabricated "processing fees." When the victim attempted to withdraw his investments on July 29, the accused demanded a 5% payment on the invested sum. Sensing foul play, the victim attempted to contact the accused, but they became unresponsive. Realising he was cheated, the victim immediately filed complaints with the 1930 Cyber Helpline, an FIR was lodged against Rutuja Lad, Neelabh Sanyal, Sanya Kapoor, and Imtaiazur Rahman—and lists multiple bank account holders used as conduits for the scam. These accounts spanned across several banks. The complainant has submitted screenshots of WhatsApp chats, payment details, and other evidence to assist in the investigation. Authorities suspect that the scam is part of a larger pan-India racket involving mule accounts and international operatives. A senior officer from the cyber cell said, "We are tracing the digital footprint of the accused and are in touch with the respective banks to freeze the accounts. Preliminary investigations indicate the involvement of a well-organised cyber syndicate."

Auto unions threaten to halt services to Heerapura terminal over fare hike delay

Jaipur: Auto rickshaw unions have threatened to stop services to the Heerapura Bus Terminal if their demand for a fare hike is not met. In a letter to chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and deputy chief minister Prem Chand Bairwa, the unions warned that they would cease operations to the terminal unless the government approves the long-pending revision of fares. Speaking to TOI, Puneet Singh Issar, president of a city auto union, said, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) had been working on revising fares since early 2025 after 12 years. "Unfortunately, they slowed down the process suddenly. We were told it is still underway, but no time frame was given for announcing the hike," Issar said. Auto drivers said that it becomes very difficult to get a passenger from places like Bhankrota. Until and unless there is a hike in fare, it would be difficult for us to drop passengers at the Heerapura terminal. "The app-based services also offer very low fares, and most passengers prefer them as they can board an auto directly from their pick-up location. Many of us are also accepting passengers through these apps. Once the government increases the fare, we will switch back to operating on meters," said Kishan Lal Jangid, an auto driver. As per the draft fare proposal, the fare for the first kilometre is likely to increase from Rs15 to Rs30, while the rate for each subsequent kilometre may go up from Rs 9 to Rs 14. The new structure also proposes a 25% hike in night charges, a luggage fee of Rs10 per piece, and a waiting charge of Rs40. "For instance, the distance from Sindhi Camp to Heerapura is around 11 km, which means the fare would be at least Rs170 under the proposed rates. The RTO is considering implementing this substantial hike in one go," said a transport official.
