Jill Sobule's mysterious death at age 66 draws investigation 'to see if drugs were involved'

Daily Mail02-05-2025
An investigation has begun into Jill Sobule's mysterious death after the I Kissed A Girl singer passed away in a house fire this week.
The beloved pop star, who is known for iconic '90s anthems which were featured in the cult classic film Clueless, was found dead at the age of 66 in a blaze at a Minneapolis residence.
However, an investigation has launched to determine the exact circumstances of her tragic passing — specifically if she died before the fire broke out or due to the blaze.
As investigators try to determine her time of death, they have started testing to see if drugs, alcohol or carbon monoxide played a part.
A rep for the Ramsey County Medical Examiner in Minnesota reported that investigators are trying to figure out if she was still alive when the house fire broke out, per TMZ.
Sobule was discovered to be deceased when Woodbury Public Safety received a call about an active housefire around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday and first responders arrived to begin searching for a missing person.
Sobule's manager and agent confirmed her death, according to the outlet, as many mourned her for being a 'force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.'
Sobule tragically perished in a house fire in Minneapolis early on Thursday morning, according to Variety.
Firefighters received a call around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday about a fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, according to local news reports.
The home was already engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived, and the blaze — whose cause wasn't immediately known — is reportedly under investigation.
Sobule, who also had a song featured in the classic 1995 comedy Clueless, reached number 20 on US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks that year with I Kissed A Girl, making it the most-successful openly LGBTQ-themed song up to that point on the Billboard charts.
She later feuded with Katy Perry after she released her hit song of the same name nearly a decade later in 2008.

In 2009, Sobule lashed out at Perry, calling her a 'f***ing little slut' in a 2009 interview with The Rumpus after initially claiming she wasn't bothered by the song.
In a 2008 interview, the singer–songwriter claimed she didn't 'feel precious about the title,' but she also admitted to getting a thrill whenever compared Perry's song unfavorably to hers.
Sobule eventually took issue with Perry reusing the song's name after the California Gurls singer claimed she had come up with 'in a dream.'
'In truth, she wrote it with a team of professional writers and was signed by the very same guy that signed me in 1995. I have not mentioned that in interviews as I don't want to sound bitter or petty — 'cause, that's not me.'
In the same interview, Sobule vented her fury at Perry in a shocking tirade.
'F*** you Katy Perry, you f***ing stupid, maybe "not good for the gays," title thieving, haven't heard much else, so not quite sure if you're talented, f***ing little slut,' she said.
Although her fame ebbed over time, she continued to regularly record and release new music in recent years.
The performer had been scheduled to appear at Swallow Hill Music's Tuft Theater in Denver, Colorado — her birthplace — on Friday.

Sobule was slated to perform a show of music from her recent autobiographical musical F*** 7th Grade, along with other tunes, but the event will reportedly now be an informal memorial hosted by 105.5 FM host Ron Bostwick, a friend of the late singer.
Her representative added that a more formal memorial to her life and work will be held this summer.
Sobule's manager, John Porter, said in a statement to Variety: 'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her.
'I lost a client and a friend today,' he continued. 'I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others.'
Sobule's longtime attorney, Ken Hertz, also paid tribute to her in a statement.
'Jill wasn't just a client. She was family to us. She showed up for every birth, every birthday, and every holiday,' he said. 'She performed at our daughter's wedding, and I was her "tech" when she performed by Zoom from our living room (while living with us) during the pandemic.'
Beginning with her 1990 debut, Things Here Are Different, Sobule released an impressive 10 studio albums and two live albums.
She was also featured in a 2003 concert film and released a greatest-hits compilation in 2001, along with several EPs in the 2000s and early 2010s.
Sobule had multiple projects in the works, included an original cast recording of F*** 7th Grade, which is scheduled for a June 6 release.
The acclaimed show was a hit with critics and was named a New York Times Critic Pick before selling out multiple extensions of its original off-Broadway run in 2022.
The show, which featured the singer performing a mix of new and old songs, was nominated for a Drama Desk award.
F*** 7th Grade's original cast album will be released alongside a 30th anniversary reissue of her self-titled sophomore album.
The original album featured I Kissed A Girl, and subsequent reissues have included her single Supermodel, which was originally featured on the Clueless soundtrack.
The song — which Sobule didn't write, unlike I Kissed A Girl — was released as the third single from the hit Alicia Silverstone–starring film's soundtrack in August 1995.
But unlike her earlier success that year, Supermodel failed to chart in the US, which though it had modest chart success in Australia.
Sobule — who identified as bisexual — wasn't afraid to touch hot-button issues in her songs, which made the prospect of strong chart showings difficult after her initial successes in the mid-'90s.
However, she maintained a devoted fan base all throughout her career, and it was thanks to them that she was able to crowdfund the recording of her 2009 LP California Years, even though that funding model was still in its infancy.
She returned to crowdfunding to finance her 2018 album Nostalgia Kills, which was her last studio album released before her death.
Aside form her work on record, she also contributed the theme song to the Nickelodeon sitcom Unfabulous, which aired from 2004–2007 and starred a young Emma Roberts.
Sobule is survived by her brother James Sobule and his wife Mary Ellen, as well as by her nephews, Ian Matthew, Robert and his wife Irina.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has dinner with singer Katy Perry in Montreal

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry had dinner together in Montreal this week. A communications consultant for the restaurant Le Violon confirmed Tuesday that the former prime minister and the singer spent about two hours at the fine-dining spot Monday evening. Photos of the meetup published by TMZ sparked speculation of a budding romance. Samantha Jin said the pair kept to themselves and neither the staff nor other patrons approached them for a photo. 'We kind of got the vibe that they were a little more chill,' she said. Jin added that there was no indication of romance in the air, noting: 'No visual signs of PDA or anything.' The report about the dinner first appeared on TMZ, which posted video of Trudeau and Perry in animated conversation at the eatery. Perry recently split from longtime partner Orlando Bloom and is on tour with stops including Ottawa on Tuesday, Montreal on Wednesday, Quebec City on Friday, and two dates in Toronto next week. Trudeau and his ex-wife Sophie Grégoire separated in 2023. During the meal, Jin said security watched from the bar as the pair noshed on a chef's menu featuring a range of appetizers including tuna, beef tartare, lobster and asparagus, with lamb as their main course. Jin said Chef Danny Smiles stopped by their table to say hello, and before heading out, they came into the kitchen to thank the team. A spokeswoman for Trudeau didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokeswoman for Perry wasn't immediately available for comment. Trudeau announced his resignation earlier this year after nearly a decade in power. His father, late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was a bachelor when he became prime minister. He dated actresses Barbra Streisand and Kim Cattrall and married a 22-year-old woman while in office at age 51. Born and raised in California, Perry is a 13-time Grammy Award nominee. She helped usher in the sound of '00s pop, quickly becoming one of the bestselling artists of all time for her campy, big, belting anthems. She has released seven studio albums, most notably 2010's sugar-sweet 'Teenage Dream.' The album produced five No. 1s that tied a record set by Michael Jackson's 1987 album 'Bad.'

Internet erupts at Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau's VERY cozy dinner date: 'Not on my celeb hookup bingo card!'

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau fans have been left baffled after the unlikely pair were spotted on a cozy dinner date this week. The singer, 40, who confirmed her split from fiance Orlando Bloom last month, and the former Canadian Prime Minister, 53, were filmed dining together in Montreal at the city's Le Violon restaurant. In a video obtained by Daily Mail, the pair leaned over a table towards one another as they intimately chatted. A smiling Perry, who is currently on the Canadian leg of her panned Lifetimes Tour, was seen gesturing as Trudeau intently listened. They were later seen grabbing drinks together. Social media erupted at the pair's date, with one fan writing: 'Did not have that one on my celebrity hookup bingo card. Others wrote: 'Both reminiscing their peaks in 2015. 'That's the most random couple I can imagine getting together in 2025 'def didn't have this on my 2025 bingo card 'Imagine the stimulating conversation these two geniuses must be having. 'You could have given me a million guesses as to who his new girlfriend was and it would never have been Katy Perry lol. 'Sort of makes sense, maybe they're bonding over their loss in popularity together. 'Or perhaps Justin is trying to get a music deal for his son's rap music.' Another quipped about Perry's panned Blue Origin mission: 'Good for her. After all she's been through, the trials and tribulations of being an astronaut while trying to be a single mom, she deserves to be happy. 'They are both insufferable, might just work out for them.' Daily Mail has contacted representatives for comment and has yet to hear back. It has been a tough few months for the unlikely pairing - with Perry weathering her tough split from former fiance Bloom, a flop album, 143, and immense backlash over her April Blue Origin space trip. Perry and Trudeau started their romantic evening with a park stroll, and headed for drinks after dinner at Taverne Atlantic, with sources telling TMZ they enjoyed some drinks on the terrace. In a video obtained by the publication, the popstar looked sensational in a black and white dress, while Trudeau cut a dapper figure in a navy shirt and slacks. Meanwhile, Trudeau is navigating life outside of 24 Sussex after his resignation in January following a dramatic fall from grace. Trudeau shares three children with ex wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, from whom he announced a split in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage. Sophie was a childhood friend and classmate of Trudeau's older brother Michel, who died in an avalanche in 1998 aged 23. They began dating in 2003 after reconnecting as adults and were engaged a short time afterwards. Perry shares one daughter Daisy, four, with Bloom, 48. Perry and Bloom began dating in 2016 and got engaged on Valentine's Day 2019. Split speculation swirled for months before the pair finally confirmed the end of their romance last month. Pouring fuel on the fire, Bloom went alone to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's star-studded wedding in Venice, with Perry in Australia on tour. Bloom shared a cryptic Instagram post about 'loneliness' and 'darkness' while Perry was seen breaking down in tears onstage at her last Australian show. Representatives for the pair confirmed to Daily Mail last month that 'Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is - and always will be - raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.' Last month, a source told Us Weekly: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,' while also adding that the separation has been 'not contentious' thus far. 'Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The Teenage Dream hitmaker - who is currently on her Lifetimes Tour - was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 until their divorce in 2012. The insider further added that the reported breakup had been 'a long time coming' and that their relationship had also been 'tense for months.' Last month, People claimed Perry's poorly performing album 143 had caused 'tension' in her relationship with her fiancé. The singer's seventh studio album was released in September 2024 and received a largely negative response from fans and critics alike, who claimed the record sounds as if it was 'generated through AI.' Perry's career continued to suffer from her 11-minute space flight which saw her join Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez for the all-female trip in April - with Bloom said to have found the intergalactic mission 'cringe' and 'embarrassing'. Perry was seen floating inside the capsule holding a daisy in a nod to Daisy. She was ridiculed on landing back to Earth and emerging with the flower in hand which she held to the sky before dropping to her knees and kissing the ground. She then proceeded to claim she was 'super connected to love' and thanked a reporter who incorrectly referred to her as an astronaut. It wasn't long before she was branded 'tone deaf' and 'dramatic' for her actions, which came days after NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to Earth after being stranded in space for more than nine months. During her show to a sold-out crowd at Chicago's United Center on May 12, the singer addressed being the 'most hated person on the Internet. In a video captured by a fan, the star takes a moment to look around at her fans, and says: 'Well, I thought I was the most hated person on the internet. 'I think that's false' Perry gushed as the cheering got louder. Trudeau announced on January 6 that he was stepping down as the Liberal party leader but stayed on as prime minister until his successor was chosen on March 9. In emotional remarks Trudeau, who served as Prime Minister since 2015, said: 'Last night over dinner I told my kids about the decision that I'm sharing with you today. I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister.' With his government in turmoil, Trudeau said Parliament would be suspended until March 24 while his Liberal Party chooses a new leader. He was succeeded by Mike Carney. The scion of one of Canada 's most famous political families had become deeply unpopular in recent years over a range of issues including the soaring cost of food and housing, and surging immigration. Trump had repeatedly mocked the former Canadian leader by suggesting his country would be better off as the 51st U.S. state. Trudeau's decision came after he faced weeks of pressure from party colleagues amid a bitter rift over how to handle relations with Trump in his second term. Trump announced on social media after his reelection a plan to introduce a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada , which led Trudeau into a frenzy to try and clean-up his relationship with the U.S. president-elect before he is sworn into office later this month. The day after unveiling the idea, Trudeau immediately flew down to Mar-a-Lago to do damage control. During that meeting, reports emerged detailing how Trudeau pleaded with Trump not to impose the tariffs and claimed it would kill Canada's economy. Last month Trump revealed he would raise tariffs on Canadian products to 35 percent from August 1. Trump said the tariff hike was in part due to the fentanyl crisis and Canada's 'failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our country '.

Dean Cain reveals racist slur he was called after being cast as Superman

Dean Cain has opened up about a racist slur used against him after he won the role as the lead in the popular 1990s show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. The actor, 58, who trashed the current Superman film starring David Corenswet as 'woke' before seeing it, revealed the nasty way a fan of the show once criticized him for being cast as the Man of Steel. 'It was 1993 and I remember a fan going, "We wanted Superman, not Sushi Man,"' he told Variety in a story published on Tuesday. Cain, whose biological father was a Japanese American serviceman, told the publication he was not offended by the comment. 'For the love of God, he's a Kryptonian. He could be green. Does it matter?' he asked after sharing his dismay over Hollywood's focus on firsts i.e., his being the first Japanese American to wear the red cape, Henry Cavill was the first British Superman and Corenswet as the first Jewish Man of Steel. 'For Superman, it was 'truth, justice in the American way.' Well, they dropped that … I don't think is a great idea,' Cain complained to TMZ prior to the film's theatrical debut. 'I think if you want to create a new character, go ahead and do that. But for me, Superman has always stood for 'truth, justice, and the American way.' ' The actor who is a Trump supporter, and has been friends with the President since he was a judge at the Miss Universe pageant in 2009, said he also took issue with writer and director James Gunn's description of the plot as an immigrant story. 'We know Superman is an immigrant — he's a freaking alien,' he said. Despite criticism from Cain and other conservative commentators, Superman has done quite well at the box office. The action-adventure written and directed by James Gunn had has earned more than $503.5 million globally, although it did not fare as well in international markets as it did domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. 'Superman has always been identified as an American character, and in some parts of the world, America is currently not enjoying its greatest popularity,' David A. Gross, of the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe told Variety after it opened at number one. Cain who has moved to Las Vegas after selling his Malibu home in May 2023 has opened up for the first time about being sexually harassed while starring in Lois & Clark. 'I could have had the biggest sexual harassment lawsuit in Hollywood history,' he claimed, but did not say who had harassed him or how. 'For the love of God, he's a Kryptonian. He could be green. Does it matter?' he said of the beloved superhero; pictured in Burbank, CA in October 2024 Lois & Clark came to an abrupt end in in 1997 after season four although he had already written several for a season five with plans for him to direct as well Lois & Clark came to an abrupt end in in 1997 after season four although he had already written several for a season five with plans for him to direct as well. Cain has spent the better part of his post-Superman career starring in faith based films. Most had small budgets, but they allowed the actor the opportunity to be a hands-on parent for his son, Christopher, now 25, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend, former Playboy model Samantha Torres. 'If you're making shows like The Chosen, or you're making a lot of these faith-based movies that I make, you're putting out content that affects people in what I would consider a very positive way, with good, strong morals and values,' he said.
