Horner's departure leaves F1 wondering what next for Verstappen

SowetanLIVE2 days ago
Christian Horner's sacking as Red Bull team boss, a seismic moment for the sport despite warning tremors, raises immediate questions about the future of star driver Max Verstappen.
The Dutch driver, who won his fourth title in a row last year, has a contract to 2028 but is wanted by both Mercedes and Aston Martin and has performance clauses that make an early exit possible.
Verstappen's importance is fundamental. The most sought-after driver on the grid is an absolute number one in a team struggling to find anyone else who can get even close to him on the track.
The champion has scored 165 of his team's 172 points in 12 races so far this season and has had three teammates in less than a year.
But he is only third in the championship, his hopes of a fifth crown this season receding fast with a hefty 69 points now between him and McLaren's leader Oscar Piastri.
If Verstappen leaves, whose seat does he take? Will it be his old Mercedes foe George Russell or Italian 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli? And where will they go?
Horner had once been seen as the glue that bound a winning team, the young leader of a group whose success confounded those who dismissed them as just an energy drink brand, and shook up the sport.
Then, after Red Bull won eight drivers' titles, six constructors' championships and 124 races, the empire began to fall apart.
The death of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in October 2022 removed a key pillar of support for Horner and led to reports of a power struggle between the team's Austrian and Thai owners.
Then in early 2024, after the most dominant season in the sport's history with Red Bull taking 21 wins in 22 races and Max Verstappen the third of his four titles, Horner faced allegations of misconduct from a female employee.
He denied them, and was cleared after an investigation, but that was not the end of the story for a man in office since 2005, the only principal Red Bull have had since entering the sport as constructors.
Some paddock regulars called time on Horner even then, seeing his position as untenable, but the 51-year-old pulled through and seemed to have cemented himself back in position.
Married to Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell, Horner enjoyed his own celebrity and has been a main man in the popular Drive to Survive Netflix docu-series, ever combative with sparring partner Toto Wolff at Mercedes.
Verstappen's father Jos was in the opposing camp.
He called for Horner to go, saying his presence would tear the team apart, and Adrian Newey — the star designer who has won titles with multiple teams — announced his departure to Aston Martin.
Sporting director Jonathan Wheatley left to become principal of Sauber, guiding them to the podium with Nico Hulkenberg at Silverstone last weekend, and aerodynamics head Rob Marshall joined now-champions McLaren.

NCC announces safety recalls for numerous Mercedes models and Range Rover Evoques

The latest recall affects 2023 Mercedes models, including the C-Class. Image: Supplied Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover have announced new recalls in South Africa, according to the National Consumer Commission (NCC). Mercedes-Benz South Africa is recalling various C-Class (206), GLC (254), S-Class (223), SL (232), and EQS (297) models, which were sold during 2023. The company warned that the vehicles could lose power without warning, or suffer from impairments to the instrument clusters or restraint functions, due to potential fuse box faults. The risk of a fire also cannot be ruled out, the NCC said in a statement released on Friday. Also on Friday, Jaguar Land Rover informed the entity that various Range Rover Evoque models were being recalled due to a possible fault with the passenger airbag. This campaign affects vehicles sold between 2021 and 2024, as well as some 2025 models. Video Player is loading. It warned that a torn airbag could reduce occupant protection and increase the risk of an injury during a collision. In such an instance, hot gases from the airbag could also potentially cause burns to occupants. Affected consumers have been urged to immediately contact their nearest authorised dealerships, which will repair the defects at no charge, the NCC's acting commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu, said. This comes after three other car manufacturers, Volkswagen, Volvo Cars and Toyota, issued separate vehicle recalls earlier this week, affecting popular models such as the VW Golf 8, Volvo XC90 PHEV and Toyota Hino 500 Series. Ratsisusu said the NCC has noted the recent rise of motor vehicle recalls and is engaging with affected suppliers for further information to determine the required steps to address this. FC Utrecht 4-0 Kaizer Chiefs: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED

Kaizer Chiefs were hammered 4-0 by Dutch outfit FC Utrecht on Friday afternoon in a training preseason match. Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi opted to start with the majority of the team that went down 2-1 to Vitesse on Tuesday but the decision backfired. The team failed to find their rhythm throughout the game which allowed Utrecht to play with freedom. The Dutch side enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages, and it came as no surprise when Siebe Horemans slotted home from close range after Chiefs failed to deal with a set-piece. Utrecht dominated possession throughout the half against a toothless Amakhosi side. Adrian Blake's brace in the second half took the game away from Kaizer Chiefs as Utrecht piled on the pressure. Coach Nasreddine Nabi responded by ringing the changes for the final 30 minutes by changing the entire team, but that was a little too late as the fourth goal came in late on. Standout performers Thabo Cele 'The Mayor' showed why he is highly rated in the PSL. Having only joined Amakhosi in January, the 28-year-old looked lively in midfield and often combined with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Makabi Lilepo. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo The 25-year-old looked dangerous going forward, and often the Dutch defence struggled to contain him. He looked much more in control when he had to ball compared to MduduzI Shabalala Makabi Lilepo The Congolese once again showed up and was a nuisance on the right-hand side. He is a sure starter for Nasreddine Nabi and it's easy to see why. Brandon Petersen The experienced keeper looked vulnerable every time the Utrecht players entered the 18-yard area. He failed to organize his defense and at times he couldn't deal with crosses. He was to blame for two goals of the three goals he conceded. Miguel Inacio The Angolan defender was often found wanting and failed to deal with a number of dangerous attacks. His partnership with Nkhanyiso Shinga and Aden McCarthy looks suspect but might improve as the season continues. Kaizer Chiefs will be back in action Saturday against NEC Nijmegen and will look to improve from Utrecht defeat. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Salmaan Moerat: Springboks will fight fire with fire in second Test against Italy

SPRINGBOK lock Salmaan Moerat, right, with legend RG Snyman will get another go at showcasing his leadership qualities against Italy. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Springbok captain Salmaan Moerat says they are ready to front up physically against Italy in the second Test on Saturday in Gqeberha. Image: BackpagePix The Springboks have a clearer picture of what to expect from Italy on Saturday, and there has been a strong focus on their breakdown and rolling mauls ahead of the second Test. After their struggles in the second half against the Azzurri, the world champions want to deliver an improved performance in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (5.10 pm kick-off) to seal the series victory. While the physicality and kicking game of the Italians might have caught them a bit unawares in the six-try 42-24 victory at Loftus Versfeld, Bok captain Salmaan Moerat is confident that they've prepared adequately for what awaits them. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ They realise the magnitude of the task ahead and Moerat has emphasised that they must front up if they want to complete a second victory. He's also highlighted the strong kicking game of Italy that could pose a threat. With a much-changed side, the Springboks won't come into the game with a lot of continuity, but they possess some special players who will look to set the stadium alight with their electric plays. Having faced their opponents, the South Africans also know a little more about the new Italian players. 'It does help that we've played them the previous week, you get a bit of a feel of what they do and what their plans are,' Moerat said about the Italians and what they could bring. #Springboks skipper Salmaan Moerat speaks on what they worked on and what they expect from Italy on Saturday in the second Test in Gqeberha #RSAvITA — Leighton Koopman (@Leighton_K) July 11, 2025 'They shocked us a bit at the breakdown, but all teams have an identity, and they pride themselves on their physicality. Their breakdown play was good, and they disrupted us there. That is one area we worked on hard (this week), and we will look to counter it. They also have an excellent kicking game. I am fairly confident that our back-three can match that. 'I would not say we underestimated them. They are a quality side if you look at the makeup of the team. It is a majority of Zebre and Benetton players. That means they are in sync, and they know each other well. There are quality game-breakers, powerful forwards and we are expecting more of the same in this game. 'We must match fire with fire.' 'Every player knows what our focus is and what needs to be done, so hopefully we can go out there and do the job on Saturday' 🗣#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 11, 2025 Fullback Willie le Roux will be playing in his 100th Test for the Springboks, while newcomers prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, centre Ethan Hooker and utility forward Cobus Wiese are all in line to make their debut off the bench. Le Roux is in an exciting back-three with another veteran, Makazole Mapimpi and Edwill van der Merwe, who is making his home debut for the Boks. All eyes will be on the halfback pairing of Grant Williams and flyhalf Manie Libbok, though. They will be tasked to spark the attack to give the back-three and centres André Esterhuizen and Canan Moodie space with the ball in hand. Should the forwards generate that dominance up front, it could become a long day in Gqeberha for the visitors. The #Springboks want to sharpen up their breakdown play ahead of the second #RSAvITA match. "It's one area they shocked us in a bit." - captain Salmaan Moerat on the Italian physicality at the ruck — Leighton Koopman (@Leighton_K) July 11, 2025 The Springboks will look to start off the match in the same fashion as last weekend, where they generated a 28-3 lead, before taking their foot off the accelerator. According to Moerat, they do not want to fall into that same trap again. The South Africans also want to set the record straight in the lineouts. 'Those we lost came down to our standards,' Moerat said about the set piece. 'We won't change much, but we weren't happy with our standards when it came to our throwing and lifting. We looked hard at what we can improve on. 'As a Springbok pack, we pride ourselves on the lineouts, scrums and rolling mauls. It was tough for us to see, but we will look to rectify it. It is tough for any team to concede a maul try, but tougher as a Springbok. The outside opinion, when looking at mauls, is that you expect the side to be dominant in attacking or stopping them. That was hard on us as a pack of forwards.'
