A new era of inclusivity with Miss SA 2024 Mia le Roux
Many beauty pageants have been associated with glitz, glamour and poise for years. However, over the years, the Miss South Africa Organisation has made strides in stretching the normal boundaries of beauty to include as many phenomenal women as possible. One such is Mia le Roux's crowning in August last year– during Women's Month – as Miss South Africa 2024, bringing a refreshing and powerful narrative to the forefront. A platform for change Mia entered the pageant with a mission far beyond the glittering crown. For her, the timing was perfect, aligning with a pivotal moment in her life as she sought to amplify the voices of those who, like her, have faced the stigma and challenges of living with a disability. 'My life experience of being part of a marginalised community as a deaf woman inspired me to enter,' she shares. 'By stepping onto a platform that would give me a voice, I aim to help break the stigma around being differently abled, create awareness and spark critical conversations on what it means to be inclusive.' She says her participation in the pageant is a bold statement that challenges preconceived notions about disability and beauty. 'I want my journey to be a beacon of hope, showing that beauty is not confined to conventional standards and that true beauty lies in resilience, courage and the desire to make a difference,' she adds. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Miss South Africa (@official_misssa) The challenges of disability in South Africa Mia acknowledges that her reign as Miss South Africa has already inspired many people living with disabilities, shedding light on the numerous challenges they face in a society that is still learning to be inclusive. 'South Africa still has away to go. Over 90 percent of people living with disabilities are unemployed. There is a lot of doubt in our capabilities, and we get pushed aside and overlooked.' Her experiences echo the frustration felt by many in the differently abled community. Despite her intelligence and capabilities, she has often encountered scepticism and hesitation when seeking opportunities. 'People doubted my ability and didn't want to take the 'risk' of employing someone like me,' she says. Moreover, the lack of accessibility in everyday experiences, such as attending the theatre without subtitles, further isolates those with disabilities from fully participating in life's simple joys. Through her advocacy during her reign, Mia aims to educate and encourage inclusivity, not only in the workplace but in every aspect of life. Her message is clear: South Africa cannot reach its full potential unless it becomes a truly united nation. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Willem Botha (@willembotha) Values rooted in a small town Mia's journey to the crown is deeply rooted in the values she learnt during her upbringing in Oudtshoorn, a small town in the Western Cape, which shaped her into the compassionate and resilient woman she is. Although she moved to Cape Town four years ago to create a better life for herself, she proudly identifies as an 'Oudtshoorniet'. Off the cuff Words that best describe me. Graceful, determined, and empathetic. I would not be where I am today without those three qualities. Following my reign… I want to be a successful businesswoman. My role model is… Bethany Hamilton, a surfer who lost her arm during a shark attack but didn't let it hold her back. I can relate to her a lot. I have a qualification in… Fitness and nutrition, but it is a bit more of a passion I want to keep within my household and lifestyle. Before my reign… I was a marketing manager for a start-up company, where I had to wear many hats. I had to do scientific product development, which is currently undergoing trials. It will be used as input ingredients for agricultural, cosmeceutical and food products. 'A small town has a beautiful mentality of looking out for one another. It's not each person for themselves.' This sense of community, coupled with the teachings of her parents, instilled in Mia a strong belief in herself, regardless of the opinions of others. 'My parents taught me to believe in myself and not take on opinions to which I can't relate. For example, if someone calls me deaf and dumb, I know I'm deaf and intelligent.' Empathy and compassion, core values from her childhood, continue to guide her as she navigates her reign and advocacy work. Inspiration and advocacy Mia draws inspiration from an array of former pageant titleholders, each leaving a unique impression on her. From Rolene Strauss's grace and empathy to Zozibini Tunzi's unapologetic authenticity, Mia admires the strength and beauty of these women. She also adds that Natasha Joubert's relatability and hard work resonate with her, reflecting the qualities she embodies as Miss South Africa. During her reign, Mia's advocacy will focus on inclusivity, a cause she holds close to her heart. 'We are leaving too many South Africans behind,' she asserts, adding that her goal is to teach the included how to be inclusive toward the excluded and ensure that no one is left behind in the nation's progress. Her vision for South Africa is one where every citizen, regardless of their abilities, gender, or background, has the opportunity to thrive. 'We always have to honour all the hardworking women who came before us and helped create a better space for women,' she says. While acknowledging that there is still much work to be done, she is hopeful for the future of women in South Africa. Her wish is for them to feel safe, empowered, and capable of looking after their mental, physical, spiritual and financial wellness. As our conversation draws to an end, Mia states that her reign as Miss South Africa is more than just a title; it is a call to action. She is using this year to build a solid foundation for the rest of her life, with a focus on tackling all forms of exclusion – whether spatial, gender-based, or related to disability. 'My ultimate goal is to create a South Africa that is inclusive, united, and truly reflective of its diverse population. I hope to carry the dreams of many, particularly those who have felt marginalised and excluded. I hope my story will be of courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.' Greenwood native named Miss Arkansas 2025
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Greenwood native Kennedy Holland was crowned Miss Arkansas 2025 on June 14. 'Congratulations to Greenwood's own Kennedy Holland,' the City of Greenwood said in a Facebook post. A student at the University of Central Arkansas, Kennedy qualified for the state competition after winning the Miss Metro title. 'Congratulations to UCA student Kennedy Holland on being crowned Miss Arkansas at the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Competition tonight in Little Rock!' UCA said in a Facebook post. 'Go Bears!' Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders adds additional funding to April tornado recovery The Miss Arkansas Scholarship Competition is part of the Miss America Organization and awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to participants each year.
