SSPA to retain monthly retirement payment system currently in use
Under the system, civil servants who meet the retirement age limit will be paid monthly like the previous pension method, instead of being allowed to make a lump sum withdrawal.
Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the proposal had also been agreed upon by the Finance Ministry (MoF) and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
"We are currently drafting the system so that permanent appointees who contribute will receive monthly payments, similar to pensioners now. That can be implemented because there is agreement from MoF and EPF.
"We have also informed the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim)... If (retirees) receive a lump sum (as done currently), some may become scam victims and lose all their money within just two days of withdrawal.
"So we are drafting the system to ensure they receive monthly payments instead. If their annual requirement is RM25,000, the remainder of their savings will be reinvested in the EPF… because they will continue to earn annual dividends," he said.
Wan Dahlan said this after the Bicara Figura Risda programme at the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority headquarters here, today.
He said simulations conducted showed that the new system would provide better financial returns for contributors.
"From the simulation carried out by PSD with MoF and EPF, for instance, someone who joins the service at Grade 1 at the age of 20 and retires at Grade 3 at 60 years old could accumulate RM1.36 million in savings.
"So I believe this scheme is very attractive and will not pose any disadvantages to civil servants," he said.
During the talk, he was also asked whether the government would allow early access to retirement funds, at least from the age of 50, for those intending to retire early.
"For those opting for early retirement, the matter needs to be discussed. I may bring it up with the Retirement Fund (Incorporated), which manages pension matters.
"Besides, this is also subject to the Pensions Act, which must be carefully reviewed to ensure it does not contradict any of the provisions under the act," he said.
The cabinet has agreed that new permanent positions in the public service will no longer come with a pension.

MACC nabs 'Datuk' for allegedly laundering millions of ringgit
PETALING JAYA: A company director with the title of Datuk has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly laundering millions of ringgit. The suspect, who is in his 50s, was arrested as part of a probe into money laundering activities amounting to around RM75mil. The director was arrested on Wednesday (July 2) after he presented himself at the MACC headquarters. He was then remanded on Thursday (July 3) for four days until July 6. "The suspect is believed to have committed the act in 2012 for the approval of a RM400mil loan for a fibre network development project. "Initial investigations believe that RM75mil was channeled to a company owned by the suspect," sources said. The arrest was a part of follow up actions under Ops Fibre. On June 30, the MACC had raided four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur that belonged to the suspect. "The MACC has also frozen 12 bank accounts, both personal and corporate, worth around RM400,000," the source added. MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that investigations were being conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

Sabah sports minister Ellron Angin denies role in mining graft scandal
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied receiving a RM530,000 bribe in the alleged mining scandal in the state. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied a news report alleging that he accepted a bribe of RM530,000 in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? China, Russia to sign SEANWFZ treaty, US reviewing: Mohamad
KUALA LUMPUR: China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the South-East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), while the United States is currently reviewing the treaty before signing, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic) said. He said the involvement of superpowers in the treaty would help preserve South-East Asia as a region of peace, free of nuclear weapons. "We have established South-East Asia as a peaceful region and next week, the foreign ministers (of relevant countries) will meet,' he said at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in Italy held in Rome on Tuesday (July 1). The session was held in conjunction with the prime minister's three-day working visit to Italy. A video recording of the session was shared with Bernama on Wednesday. SEANWFZ, also known as the Bangkok Treaty, was signed in December 1995 in Bangkok by ten Asean member countries. It came into effect in March 1997. The protocol of the treaty commits Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to respect SEANWFZ and not contribute to any act that violates the treaty and its protocols; to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against states in the zone; and to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons within the zone. Malaysia will host the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (58th AMM) and Related Meetings, which will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. Malaysia took over the Asean Chairmanship on January 1, 2025, from Laos with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', reflecting the country's commitment to fostering a united and prosperous Asean. This is Malaysia's fifth Asean Chairmanship after having assumed the role in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. - Bernama
