MACC nabs 'Datuk' for allegedly laundering millions of ringgit
The suspect, who is in his 50s, was arrested as part of a probe into money laundering activities amounting to around RM75mil.
The director was arrested on Wednesday (July 2) after he presented himself at the MACC headquarters.
He was then remanded on Thursday (July 3) for four days until July 6.
"The suspect is believed to have committed the act in 2012 for the approval of a RM400mil loan for a fibre network development project.
"Initial investigations believe that RM75mil was channeled to a company owned by the suspect," sources said.
The arrest was a part of follow up actions under Ops Fibre. On June 30, the MACC had raided four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur that belonged to the suspect.
"The MACC has also frozen 12 bank accounts, both personal and corporate, worth around RM400,000," the source added.
MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that investigations were being conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

RM150,000 worth of elephant tusks seized; two detained
KUALA LUMPUR: Two men have been arrested for hiding elephant tusks worth more than RM150,000 in a house at Bandar Botanic. The suspects, aged 37 and 38, were detained during a raid by the police's Wildlife Crime Bureau and the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) at 8.30am on Tuesday. The raid was part of Op Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) following intelligence gathering by authorities. Perhilitan director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim said one tusk was found concealed in a wardrobe during the inspection. Another section of an elephant tusk was placed on an altar. Abuse of position: Ex-assistant civil engineer to know fate August 20

Kota Kinabalu: A former assistant civil engineer, who appealed against the 12 months' jail sentence and RM20,000 fine on two counts for abusing his position in awarding a road maintenance project to his sister's company, will know the outcome of his appeal on Aug 20. High Court Judge Datuk Celestina Stuel Galid on Thursday fixed the date for appellant Herwan Malik after hearing his appeal against the Sessions Court's decision and submissions from the prosecution as the respondent. Advertisement Herwan, 40, who was challenging both his conviction and sentence, appealed to set aside the decision made by the trial judge. On Aug 29, 2023 he was convicted and sentenced to 12 months' jail and RM10,000 fine in default three months' jail on the first count for misusing his position as the committee member in making a decision on Kota Marudu District Office quotation to select Pemborong Sri Tassha which belonged to his sister Rozanah Malik, 32, to carry out the road maintenance project along Jalan Pertanian in Kg Sungai Laut, Kota Marudu. The offence took place between 8am and 5pm on Feb 28, 2013 at the Kota Marudu District Office. On the second count, Herwan was jailed another 12 months plus RM10,000 fine, or three months' jail for misusing his position to award the road maintenance project in Kg Pendawar, Kota Marudu, to the same company at the same place at 3pm on April 30, 2014. Herwan was ordered to serve the jail sentence concurrently but he managed to obtain a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court. Counsel Shahlan Jufri, representing the appellant, raised 10 grounds of appeal, which summarised that the trial judge failed to properly evaluate all the evidence adduced during the trial and did not fairly or justly assess the defence. He further argued that the Sessions Court judge erred in law and in fact by concluding that his defence was an afterthought, a bare denial, and a fabrication of evidence. He also claimed the judge failed to draw an adverse inference under Section 114(g) of the Evidence Act 1950 against the prosecution, and erred in finding that he had failed to rebut the presumption under Section 23(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009. Deputy Public Prosecutor Haresh Prakash Somiah urged the court to uphold the Sessions Court judge's findings and dismiss the appeal. He submitted that the evidence before the court had been tested for its truthfulness, and the credibility of all the respondent's witnesses remained intact and that the appellant's evidence, on the other hand, was shown to suffer from contradictions and bare denials. Criminal Breach of Trust: Sales assistant gets jail, rotan

TAWAU: A 36-year-old sales assistant was jailed one year and ordered given three strokes of the cane for committing criminal breach of trust involving company funds amounting to RM10,550. Fadhil Salleh Kasim pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ahmad Faizadh Yahaya to the charge against him. Advertisement He had breached the trust given to him as a sales assistant of a supermarket which entrusted him RM10,550 at 7.30pm on June 7 at the supermarket in Semporna. Fadhil had withdrawn the cash without the knowledge of his superiors, which constituted a breach of legal contract. He was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment for criminal breach of trust by a person in a position of trust. According to the facts of the case, at 12.40 pm on June 12, a complainant, who was also an assistant manager, discovered during a check that there was a shortfall in the RM20,000 kept in the cash box. A review of CCTV footage revealed that the accused had taken money from the safe on June 7 without the company's permission. As a result, Fadhil was found to have committed the offence by withdrawing RM10,550 that had been entrusted to him. The court ordered jail sentence from the date of arrest on June 18.
