Canadian teenager Mboko reaches semifinals in Montreal and will face Rybakina

Washington Post21 hours ago
MONTREAL — Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko advanced to her first career WTA Tour semifinal with a 6-4, 6-2 win victory over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Monday night at the National Bank Open.
Two days after ousting No. 1 seed Coco Gauff in just 62 minutes, there was no letdown for the 18-year-old from Toronto.
After taking a back-and-forth — and error-filled — first set, Mboko was broken in a sluggish start to the second set but broke back in the fourth and sixth games to take a 4-2 advantage.
Mboko is the first Canadian to reach the WTA 1000 event's semifinals since Bianca Andreescu's title run in 2019. She's also the youngest woman to reach the semis since Belinda Bencic's 2015 win in Toronto.
Mboko will face Elena Rybakina, who led Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 2-1 when the Ukrainian was forced to stop playing because of an apparent arm injury.
Rybakina, the No. 9 seed from Kazakhstan, converted three of her 10 break-point chances in the quarterfinal matchup at IGA Stadium. The players shook hands at the 54-minute mark before the 24th-seeded Kostyuk exited the court in tears.
After the third game, Kostyu's trainers wrapped her forearm in medical tape.
In a breakthrough year, Mboko has surged from outside the top 300 to a career-high No. 85. That number is projected to climb to at least No. 55, according to WTA live rankings.
After two injury-plagued years, Mboko — who had shown promise as a junior — opened the season with a 22-match win streak and captured five titles on the lower-tier ITF Tour.
She then qualified for her first Grand Slam main draw at the French Open, reaching the third round, before stunning 25th-seeded Magdalena Frech in the first round at Wimbledon.
And the upsets keep coming.
In Montreal, Mboko has rattled off wins over 79th-ranked Kimberly Birrell, No. 23 seed Sofia Kenin, 39th-ranked Marie Bouzkova and Gauff, who is ranked No. 2.
Her latest victory boosted her record to 25-8 against higher-ranked players and 51-9 in all competitions.
In the other quarterfinals Tuesday, No. 6 seed Madison Keys — the highest-seeded player remaining — faces No. 16 Clara Tauson, and former No. 1-ranked Naomi Osaka meets No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina.
The tournament final is Thursday.

Ben Shelton reaches first career Masters 1000 semifinal, will face Taylor Fritz

Ben Shelton, world No. 7 and fourth seed at the Canadian Open, can add ATP Masters 1000 semifinalist to his growing list of accomplishments. The 22-year-old American defeated world No. 8 Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 31 minutes at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open. This tournament saw Shelton record his 100th ATP Tour victory. Now, he will square off against compatriot Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. Advertisement Shelton and de Minaur traded service holds to open the match. Shelton's powerful serve was on display, clocking 11 aces for the match and reaching a max speed of 146 mph. His return game, and his ability to hang with de Minaur's court coverage, would tell the tale in the match. Shelton limited the unforced errors — only 23 for the match — and won 16 points of nine or more shots compared to de Minaur's nine. With Shelton leading 3-2 in the first set, and with de Minaur serving at game point, he showcased his deep forehands, running the Aussie side to side on the baseline. Shelton displayed quick feet to slide and get a backhand slice winner, keeping him in the game. Tall order: delivered 📮 @NBOtoronto | # — ATP Tour (@atptour) August 6, 2025 At deuce, Shelton connected on a winner after 14 shots. He would secure the first break of the match, guiding him to the first set. From there, De Minaur began to pile on the unforced errors. The mistakes crept in at 1-1 of the second set, with his forehand sailing wide and going in the net on break point, giving Shelton the edge. The Aussie responded with an immediate break back, only to be broken again. In a 16-shot rally, Shelton kept the ball in play, not unleashing with one of his blazing groundstrokes. He forced de Minaur to make an unforced error, giving Shelton the critical break back. The American wouldn't be broken again. On his final service game, Shelton put an exclamation point with his 11th ace to go up 40-0. A backhand long from de Minaur gave Shelton the victory. For Fritz, it was a convincing 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Andrey Rublev in one hour, 21 minutes. He only got broken once, snapping a streak of holding serve 41 times in a row, dating back to his first match in Toronto. This will be the second meeting between the two American men, with Fritz outlasting Shelton in three sets at Indian Wells in 2023. It's a quick turnaround for the two friends, squaring off Wednesday under the lights for a spot in the final. (Photo of Ben Shelton: Julian Avram / Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Panthers HC Dave Canales reveals preseason plan for QB Bryce Young, starters

The Carolina Panthers will seemingly give us a better preview of their first-string squads this preseason. Head coach Dave Canales chatted with Kay Adams, host of Up & Adams, from the site of the team's training camp on Friday. Adams, when talking about the growing connection between quarterback Bryce Young and 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, asked Canales if we'll get to see the starters during upcoming exhibition play. "Absolutely," he replied. "My plan is to play a series or two with the starters for the first two preseason games. So, I'm excited to get them out there. It goes beyond just the reps in the game. It's the night before, it's the morning of, it's what you eat, it's how you mentally prepare, it's going through your process of body readiness going into the game. Those are valuable reps—as much as going out there actually playing the game. "So, I'm excited to kinda throw that at the guys—especially some of the younger players, the rookies and all that. But certainly our starters, just playing together and feeling what that feels like to prep from the night before all the way going up to it." That was not the case last summer, when Canales opted to hold much of his starters out from the first two preseason outings. The first-year head coach was questioned for that decision, especially after the Panthers were thoroughly thrashed in their regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Canales did roll out the first-team offense in their 2024 preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. The brief outing saw Young complete six of his eight passes for 70 yards and a touchdown during an efficient 12-play scoring drive. The Panthers will open up preseason play next Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET, when they host the Cleveland Browns from Bank of America article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers HC Dave Canales reveals preseason plan for starters
