Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upsets top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach Montreal quarterfinals
Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova.
The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, will face the winner of the late match between Lin Zhu of China and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.
In Rome in May, Gauff rallied to beat Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a round-of-64 match.
Earlier, 24th-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan set up a quarterfinal match. Kostyuk beat McCartney Kessler of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Rybakina topped Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

As Cowboys and Micah Parsons negotiations lag 2 weeks into training camp, that doesn't mean Parsons isn't talking with leadership
OXNARD, Calif. — As the Dallas Cowboys' first-team offense faced its first-team defense in 11-on-11 drills on Monday, Micah Parsons watched from the sideline. The two-time All-Pro edge rusher wore his No. 11 navy jersey atop a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants, and his basketball shoes instead of cleats were yet another sign he would not be practicing. But Parsons wasn't simply present to hold in, rather than hold out, to avoid absence fines amid lagging negotiations on a contract extension. 'The meetings have been really good,' Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. 'What you see from him is the coaching piece of it and all that that he's doing. Diving into the other guys and I don't think you'll see much different. 'But again: very engaged, asks good questions, and I don't think that that's going to change.' Two weeks have elapsed since the Cowboys reported to training camp in California, a two-week period in which Parsons has not fully participated in any practice. On Monday, Parsons spoke at length with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to the side of defensive line drills during periods of individual work. He then spent most of team drills with Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay, Parsons and McClay watching at ground level from the sideline while team owner and general manager Jerry Jones watched from an adjacent temporary tower. Parsons also spent time with cornerback Trevon Diggs during the Cowboys' late-practice 7-on-7 period. Parsons wore his Cowboys jersey Monday after not doing so Saturday (the players were off Sunday). It was unclear whether Schottenheimer directly asked Parsons to return to wearing his jersey, but it was not unclear whether Schottenheimer preferred that. 'Not a big deal,' Schottenheimer said. 'I mean, we want all of our guys to be the same. And again, there's usually a reason if a guy's not in that. But again, for the most part we're a team. We're going to always act like a team and usually you'll see them all in gear.' Parsons' reason for not wearing the jersey Saturday seemed either connected to, or fortuitously timed near, his Friday request for a trade. Parsons enters the fifth-year option of his rookie deal with the team that selected him 12th overall in 2021. He's dominated in his first four campaigns, racing to 52.5 sacks, 256 tackles, 112 quarterback hits and nine forced fumbles in 63 games. The Cowboys insist they want to pay him and plan to keep him. But negotiations dovetailed when Parsons met directly with Jones in March, a meeting that Jones considered a formal negotiation — a premise that left Parsons feeling misled. Parsons asked the Cowboys to continue and finalize negotiations with his agent, David Mulugheta. Jones became frustrated that Parsons wasn't simply honoring the deal the team owner believed they had, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiation factors told Yahoo Sports. As of Friday, the Cowboys had yet to send Mulugheta a single contract offer. 'Still not a call[,] email or text to my agent about starting a negotiation,' Parsons wrote in a post on Twitter. 'Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract.' That remained true as of Monday evening, a person with knowledge of negotiations confirmed to Yahoo Sports. The Cowboys seem to be taking a good cop-bad cop approach, with Jones digging his heels in with, at times, hard-ball negotiation tactics while the coaching staff and even front office members like McClay continue to engage Parsons. The coaching staff has been hesitant to comment or speculate on where negotiations will go, downplaying what the loss of Parsons means to offensive linemen unable to get the caliber of reps an All-Pro could provide. But Schottenheimer said defensive game plans will not change amid Parsons' current stance. The coaching staff expects Parsons to be available for the Sept. 4 season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles and beyond. 'We're still planning on moving Micah around and putting him in all the spots that we see him and using our fronts the way we want to see it,' Schottenheimer said. 'We go about our business every day. We live in the moment. We focus in the moment. And again, like I said, I talked to you guys the other day, not going to get a lot into it. 'But I expect Micah to be here.'

The Texas Rangers made two huge organizational decisions at the MLB trade deadline that could have a massive impact on their immediate future: they chose not to upgrade their lineup and instead doubled down on their already first-rate pitching staff. Fans will hope that management's leap of faith pays off and direct their attention to the notable additions the team did make, the last of which could add more stability and experience to the bullpen. Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young completed a deal right before the deadline to acquire relief pitcher Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The veteran right-hander, who has also pitched for the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Tampa Rays and New York Mets during his nine-year career, has a 2.35 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings this season. Texas is fully aware that its most optimal path to another World Series is via a loaded starting pitching rotation and formidable pen. After acquiring the underrated Merrill Kelly, effective lefty Danny Coulombe and now Maton, it appears the front office has reinforced the squad's identity. Although questions will continue to hover above an offense that ranks in the bottom-five in OPS, slugging percentage, batting average and doubles, no opposing ballclub will want to face the Rangers' hurlers. But they have to make the playoffs first. Texas (57-52) is currently tied with the Seattle Mariners for the final American League Wild Card slot and trail the Astros by five and a half games in the AL West. All three of those teams were incredibly active over the last couple of days, setting the stage for a thrilling last two months of the 2025 campaign. Based on the aggression he displayed on Thursday, Young is obviously confident this franchise is ready for another deep run. Do Rangers have enough firepower to get back to Fall Classic? With Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and Merrill Kelly comprising a tantalizing trio on the mound, and two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager and multi-time All-Stars Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia in the lineup, the Rangers look the part of a dark-horse pennant winner. Of course, a club cannot prevail in the modern postseason format without an impactful bullpen. Ahead of the trade deadline, Texas had three relievers in Robert Garcia, Hoby Milner and Shawn Armstrong who have a sub-3.00 ERA through at least 47 appearances this year. Although Phil Maton has pitched in only 40 games this season, he is another potential difference-maker during the playoff push, and possibly beyond. The 32-year-old is striking out 30.4 percent of opposing hitters while posting a measly .292 slugging percentage against, statistics that could play incredibly well in October. Rangers fans will probably sweat profusely during the remainder of the summer, but they at least know that their beloved franchise is serious about competing for its second title in three years. The New York Yankees have been busy at the trade deadline as the team gears up for a second-half push and another playoff run. While the Yankees were expected to prioritize pitching at the deadline, the team has also added several infielders. And, in a last-minute deal on Thursday, New York parted ways with a former top prospect. The Yankees have traded Oswald Peraza to the Los Angeles Angels, per YES Network's Jack Curry. New York received 18-year-old outfielder Wilberson De Pena and cash considerations in return for the versatile infielder, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman. Peraza had been a big part of the Yankees' plans in 2025. He got lots of playing time in the first half as DJ LeMahieu struggled through injuries and inefficiency prior to his release and Oswaldo Cabrera suffered a season-ending ankle fracture. Yankees reshape infield at deadline, ship Oswald Peraza to Angels Once upon a time Peraza was a top prospect in New York's farm system. He debuted in 2022 and bounced back and forth between the majors and the minors over the next two seasons. But in 2025 Peraza got his first shot at an everyday role with the Yankees. While he was fine defensively, the 25-year-old infielder failed to contribute at the plate. Peraza slashed .152/.212/.241 with an abysmal 26 OPS+ in 71 games for New York this season. His lack of offensive production played a role in the Yankees' decision to pursue a third baseman at the deadline. New York acquired Ryan McMahon as an offensive upgrade at the hot corner. The Yankees also added infielder Amed Rosario in a trade with the Washington Nationals last week. On Thursday, the team landed another infielder, bringing in Jose Caballero through a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. Like Rosario, Caballero offers New York versatility with his ability to field a number of positions. But the former Rays player also adds elite speed on the base paths for the Yankees. Caballero leads the majors with 34 stolen bases this season and he finished with an AL-high 44 steals in 2024. The Yankees have struggled defensively of late. Anthony Volpe has had a particularly difficult time in the field. The shortstop committed his MLB-leading 16th error of the season Wednesday. New York will stick with the former Gold Glove winner for now but the team has moved on from Peraza amid a sudden influx of infielders joining the club.
