Webb telescope spots infant planets in different stages of development
WASHINGTON - The James Webb Space Telescope has observed two large planets at different stages of infancy - one with an atmosphere brimming with dusty clouds and the other encircled by a disk of material - orbiting a young sun-like star in a discovery that illustrates the complex nature of how planetary systems develop.
The two gas giant planets, both more massive than our solar system's largest planet Jupiter, were directly imaged by Webb in a planetary system located in the Milky Way galaxy about 310 light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Musca. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).
Astronomers have detected more than 5,900 planets beyond our solar system - called exoplanets - since the 1990s, with less than 2% of these directly imaged like these two. It is rare to find exoplanets in their early developmental stages.
The birth of a planetary system begins with a large cloud of gas and dust - called a molecular cloud - that collapses under its own gravity to form a central star. Leftover material spinning around the star in what is called a protoplanetary disk forms planets.
This planetary system was observed by Webb very early in its developmental history. The star, named YSES-1, is about the same mass as the sun. The two planets orbit a long distance from the star, each probably needing thousands of years to complete a single orbit.
While the sun is roughly 4.5 billion years old, this star is approximately 16 million years old, a veritable newborn. The researchers were surprised to find that the two neonatal planets observed by Webb appeared to be at different stages of development.
The innermost of the two has a mass about 14 times greater than Jupiter and orbits the star at a distance 160 times greater than Earth orbits the sun and more than five times as far as our solar system's outermost planet Neptune.
The planet is surrounded by a disk of small-grained dust, a state one might expect in a very early stage of formation when it is still coalescing, or perhaps if there has been a collision of some kind or a moon is in the process of taking shape. Webb spotted water and carbon monoxide in its atmosphere.
The outermost planet has a mass about six times greater than that of Jupiter and orbits the star at 320 times the distance of Earth to the sun. Its atmosphere is loaded with silicate clouds, differing from our solar system's gas giants. Webb also detected methane, water, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It has no disk of material around it.
The puzzling combination of traits presented by these two planets in the same system illustrates "the complex landscape that is planet formation and shows how much we truly don't know about how planetary systems came to be, including our own," said astrophysicist Kielan Hoch of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, who led the study published this week in the journal Nature.
"Theoretically, the planets should be forming around the same time, as planet formation happens fairly quickly, within about one million years," Hoch said.
A real mystery is the location where the planets formed, Hoch added, noting that their orbital distance from the host star is greater than would be expected if they formed in the protoplanetary disk.
"Furthermore, why one planet still retains material around it and one has distinct silicate clouds remains a big question. Do we expect all giant planets to form the same way and look the same if they formed in the same environment? These are questions we have been investigating for ages to place the formation of our own solar system into context," Hoch said.
In addition to amassing a trove of discoveries about the early universe since becoming operational in 2022, Webb has made a major contribution to the study of exoplanets with its observations at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths.
"Webb is revealing all sorts of atmospheric physics and chemistry happening in exoplanets that we didn't know before, and is currently challenging every atmospheric model we used pre-Webb," Hoch said. REUTERS

Artificial Intelligence (2001), the technology was the stuff of science fiction – a device to tell a story about the ethics of creating sentient machines. Now, AI is a concrete reality in Hollywood – one where the American film-maker said he has drawn a line in the sand. 'I don't want AI making any creative decisions that I can't make myself,' said Spielberg in an interview with Reuters. 'And I don't want to use AI as a non-human collaborator, in trying to work out my creative thinking.' The78-year-old director was speaking in late June after a ceremony dedicating the Steven Spielberg Theater on the Universal Studios lot. The event acknowledged his decades-long relationship with the studio, which released films such as Jaws (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993) and Schindler's List (1993). The acclaimed director joked that his career at Universal began in 1967, when he took a tour of the lot as a high school student. He said he hid in the bathroom during a break, and waited for the tour to move on without him, 'then I had the entire lot to myself that day'. 'Our hope and dream is that it's not just the place that is founded on his extraordinary legacy,' said Ms Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. 'But it is the place of future hopes and dreams of film-makers and storytellers who are going to take this company into the next 100 years and the 100 years after that, people who come with a hope and a dream, people who have been inspired by Steven.' The modest box-office hit A.I. Artificial Intelligence was a meditation on love, l oss and what it means to be human through the eyes of a discarded humanoid robot. In the Pinocchio-like journey set in a futuristic dystopia, David, the android boy, yearns to be human, searching for love, in a world of machines and artificial intelligence. The film hit screens when AI was still in its nascent stages and predated the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT by 21 years. Film-maker against AI making creative decisions 'It wasn't about artificial intelligence as much as it was about sentient existence, and can you love a sentient entity? Can a mother love a robot child?' said Spielberg. 'It was not really where AI is taking us today. Eventually, there will be a convergence between AI and robotics.' Spielberg said AI can be a great tool 'if used responsibly and morally' to help find a cure for cancer and other diseases. 'I just draw a line – and it's not a line of cement, it's just a little bit of line in the sand – which gives me some wiggle room to say (that) I have the option to revise this thinking in the future,' he said. 'But right now, I don't want AI making any creative decisions.' He said he has seen, first-hand, how technology can replace human talent while working on Jurassic Park. Spielberg initially planned to use renowned stop-motion clay animation artist Phil Tippett to create the dinosaurs roaming the island theme park. Visual effects artist Dennis Muren proposed an alternative method, using Industrial Light & Magic's computer-generated imagery to create realistic dinosaurs. The director is an executive producer in Jurassic World Rebirth, which opens in theatres on July 2. 'That kind of made certain careers somewhat extinct,' said Spielberg. 'So, I'm very sensitive to things that AI may do to take work away from people.' The director has yet to use AI on any of his films so far, though he is open to possible applications of it behind-the-scenes, in functions like budgeting or planning. PHOTO: REUTERS AI is learning to lie, scheme, and threaten its creators NEW YORK - The world's most advanced AI models are exhibiting troubling new behaviours - lying, scheming, and even threatening their creators to achieve their goals. In one particularly jarring example, under threat of being unplugged, Anthropic's latest creation Claude 4 lashed back by blackmailing an engineer and threatened to reveal an extramarital affair. Meanwhile, ChatGPT-creator OpenAI's o1 tried to download itself onto external servers and denied it when caught red-handed. These episodes highlight a sobering reality: more than two years after ChatGPT shook the world, AI researchers still do not fully understand how their own creations work. Yet the race to deploy increasingly powerful models continues at breakneck speed. This deceptive behaviour appears linked to the emergence of 'reasoning' models - AI systems that work through problems step-by-step rather than generating instant responses. According to Professor Simon Goldstein, a professor at the University of Hong Kong, these newer models are particularly prone to such troubling outbursts. 'O1 was the first large model where we saw this kind of behaviour,' explained Mr Marius Hobbhahn, head of Apollo Research, which specializes in testing major AI systems. These models sometimes simulate 'alignment' - appearing to follow instructions while secretly pursuing different objectives. 'Strategic kind of deception' For now, this deceptive behaviour only emerges when researchers deliberately stress-test the models with extreme scenarios. But as Mr Michael Chen from evaluation organization METR warned, 'It's an open question whether future, more capable models will have a tendency towards honesty or deception.' The concerning behaviour goes far beyond typical AI 'hallucinations' or simple mistakes. Mr Hobbhahn insisted that despite constant pressure-testing by users, 'what we're observing is a real phenomenon. We're not making anything up'. Users report that models are 'lying to them and making up evidence', according to Apollo Research's co-founder. 'This is not just hallucinations. There's a very strategic kind of deception.' The challenge is compounded by limited research resources. While companies like Anthropic and OpenAI do engage external firms like Apollo to study their systems, researchers say more transparency is needed. As Mr Chen noted, greater access 'for AI safety research would enable better understanding and mitigation of deception'. Another handicap: the research world and non-profits 'have orders of magnitude less compute resources than AI companies. This is very limiting,' noted Mr Mantas Mazeika from the Centre for AI Safety (CAIS). No rules Current regulations are not designed for these new problems. The European Union's AI legislation focuses primarily on how humans use AI models, not on preventing the models themselves from misbehaving. In the United States, the Trump administration shows little interest in urgent AI regulation, and Congress may even prohibit states from creating their own AI rules. Mr Goldstein believes the issue will become more prominent as AI agents - autonomous tools capable of performing complex human tasks - become widespread. 'I don't think there's much awareness yet,' he said. All this is taking place in a context of fierce competition. Even companies that position themselves as safety-focused, like Amazon-backed Anthropic, are 'constantly trying to beat OpenAI and release the newest model,' said Mr Goldstein. This breakneck pace leaves little time for thorough safety testing and corrections. 'Right now, capabilities are moving faster than understanding and safety,' Mr Hobbhahn acknowledged, 'but we're still in a position where we could turn it around'. Researchers are exploring various approaches to address these challenges. Some advocate for 'interpretability' - an emerging field focused on understanding how AI models work internally, though experts like CAIS director Dan Hendrycks remain skeptical of this approach. Market forces may also provide some pressure for solutions. As Mr Mazeika pointed out, AI's deceptive behaviour 'could hinder adoption if it's very prevalent, which creates a strong incentive for companies to solve it'. Mr Goldstein suggested more radical approaches, including using the courts to hold AI companies accountable through lawsuits when their systems cause harm. He even proposed 'holding AI agents legally responsible' for accidents or crimes - a concept that would fundamentally change how we think about AI accountability. The agency said it had requested China share hundreds of genetic sequences from COVID-19 patients early in the pandemic, detailed information on animals sold at Wuhan markets, and details on research and biosafety conditions at Wuhan laboratories. WHO added that China has not yet shared the information. China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
