After a rather underwhelming Summer League debut, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg bounced back against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

In the battle of the two Texas teams, Flagg exploded for 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft also had four rebounds and an assist, while committing just two turnovers.
Flagg outshined 2025 No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper, who had 16 points for the Spurs. Harper, however, had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
While the Mavs ended up losing 76-69, it was still an overall encouraging showing for Flagg. After all, in his first game against the Los Angeles Lakers, he was 5-of-21 from the field en route to scoring just 10 points.

After the game, Flagg talked about his play and noticeable improvement, a clear sign that he has gotten more comfortable with the level of play. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that it still wasn't a great performance, pointing out his free throw shooting as a key issue.

The 18-year-old forward was 8-of-13 from the free throw line, something that Flagg says his mom won't be happy about.
"Missed a bunch of free throws, my mom probably isn't very happy with that," Flagg said while talking to the media following the game, per Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints.
There's certainly room for improvement for Cooper Flagg, but there's no denying that he showed against the Spurs the talent and skills that made him the best prospect in the class of 2025.
Flagg and the Mavericks return to action on Monday against the Charlotte Hornets. It will be an interesting matchup, as Flagg faces off against his former Duke Blue Devils teammate Kon Knueppel — the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 draft.

2025 British Open: Lee Westwood turns back the clock for a day at Royal Portrush

Lee Westwood is golf's most famous bridesmaid, an affable bloke who's never quite managed to get across the finish line in majors. He was the last man in the field out before two of the most playoffs of this century: the famous Tiger Woods-Rocco Mediate battle in the 2008 U.S. Open and the legendary Tom Watson-Stewart Cink tilt in the 2009 British Open. During one stretch from 2009 to 2010, he finished T3 or better in four of the five majors ... but didn't win any of them. So it came as a bit of a jolt for American audiences who woke up Thursday morning to see Lee Westwood near the top of the leaderboard at the British Open. (Also up there: Phil Mickelson, who outdueled Westwood in 2010 at the Masters. Fifteen years ago.) Westwood rode three early birdies to a front-nine 33. Only a couple late bogeys marred his round, but he nonetheless finished the day at -2, two strokes behind clubhouse leaders Jacob Skov Olesen and Haotong Li. The key fact about Westwood's run of majors is that it came back in the 2000s and early 2010s — a lifetime ago in golf terms. All told, he had three runner-up finishes and 12 top-5s, a crushing run of near-misses. Late in his career, he opted to jump to LIV Golf, and effectively vanished from the golf scene just as he was poised to become a key figure in the European Ryder Cup firmament. At least he earned one more day in the spotlight ... and maybe a few more.

Former Eagles LB Bryan Braman passes away at age 38

Former Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bryan Braman passed away on Thursday after seeking treatment this year for a rare, aggressive form of cancer, according to his agent. He was 38. KPRC in Houston was informed by Braman's agent, Sean Stellato, that the linebacker was "in the fight of his life." J.J. Watt, a teammate of his when they both played for the Houston Texans, donated $10,000 as a show of support. More recently, former Eagles star and FS1 mainstay Emmanuel Acho spoke up after hearing the news. Braman, a former 2011 undrafted rookie free agent, spent the first three years of his career with the Houston Texans. After that, he landed in Philadelphia for the first of two stints with the Birds. According to Braman's GoFundMe page, one set up by his friend, William Jones, the former Eagle underwent multiple "CAR-T cell reprogramming treatment programs in Seattle." As of July 3, $32,000 had been raised. Braman played seven seasons in the NFL, from 2011 to 2017. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Bryan Braman passed away at age 38

Inside the Sauce Gardner deal

The Jets and Sauce Gardner have worked out a new deal. On the surface, it's the best deal ever signed by an NFL cornerback. At a deeper level, it's open to interpretation. First, the details. Here they are, per a source with knowledge of the terms: 1. Signing bonus: $13.75 million, paid in full by September 30, 2025. 2. 2025 base salary: $1.25 million, fully guaranteed. 3. 2026 option bonus: $20 million, fully guaranteed. 4. 2026 workout bonus: $250,000, fully guaranteed (but must be earned). 5. 2026 base salary: $5.25 million, fully guaranteed. 6. 2027 option bonus: $10 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2026. 7. 2027 workout bonus: $250,000, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2026 (but must be earned). 8. 2027 base salary: $13.953 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2026. 9. 2027 per-game roster bonus: $750,000 total, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2026 (but must be earned). 10. 2028 workout bonus: $250,000, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2027 (but must be earned). 11. 2028 base salary: $19.2 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2027. 12. 2028 per-game roster bonus: $750,000 total, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2027 (but must be earned). 13. 2029 workout bonus: $250,000. 14. 2029 base salary: $29.1 million. 15. 2030 per-game roster bonus: $750,000 total. 16. 2030 workout bonus: $250,000. 17. 2030 base salary: $29.1 million. 18. 2030 per-game roster bonus: $750,000 total. The new-money APY of $30.1 million beats Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. by $100,000 per year. However, there are some key differences. First, Stingley signed a three-year extension. He's under contract for five years, not six. Second, Stingley has better guarantees than Gardner, despite being under contract for one fewer year. For Stingley, the total guarantee is $89 million, with $48 million fully guaranteed at signing, $68 million fully guaranteed by 2026, and the full $89 million vesting by 2027. For Gardner, the total guarantee is $85.65 million, with $40.5 million fully guaranteed at signing, $65.45 million fully guaranteed by 2026, and the full $85.65 million vesting by 2027. Stingley also has better cash flow in the early years, with $6 million more in 2026 and $7.3 million more through 2027. One last point. Stingley pushed the bar up by $5 million per year, over Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn. Gardner has nudged it by only $100,000 per year. It's still a great deal for Gardner, who had a down year in 2024. The new regime easily could have waited until 2026 to re-do the deal. Of course, if/when Gardner had gotten back to his form of 2022-23, it would have cost a lot more if they had opted to kick the can for a year.
