'No hard feelings': Donald Trump responds to Elon Musk's apology after intense feud; JD Vance tries to ease tensions

US President
Donald Trump
has welcomed
Elon Musk
's apology following their very public online feud, saying he holds 'no hard feelings' after the billionaire admitted he had gone 'too far' in his criticism.
'I thought it was very nice that he did that,' Trump told the New York Post during an interview on Wednesday, after Musk posted a late-night message on his platform X saying, 'I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.'
The spat between the two began last week when Musk unleashed a string of harsh social media comments, accusing Trump of blocking the release of government files related to the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Musk also claimed that Trump wouldn't have won the 2024 election without his support and called the president's major tax bill a 'disgusting abomination.'
Musk's attacks followed his departure from the government's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). After stepping down, he called for Americans to 'kill the bill' in Congress, warning it could 'cause a recession in the second half of the year.' The bill includes tax cuts and increased defence spending and passed the House last month.

's federal contracts, reportedly worth around $38 billion. Despite the heated exchange, Trump appeared open to reconciliation.
'Look, I have no hard feelings,' he told columnist Miranda Devine on her 'Pod Force One' podcast. 'I was really surprised that that happened. He went after a bill that's phenomenal.
I think he feels very badly that he said that, actually.'
Efforts to patch things up have already begun behind the scenes. US vice president JD Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles reportedly spoke to Musk on Friday in an attempt to ease tensions. While it remains unclear if Musk personally contacted Trump, some reports suggest he may have called the president earlier this week.
Trump declined to say whether he was ready to fully reconcile but left the door open.
'I guess I could, but we have to straighten out the country,' he was quoted as saying to the Post. 'And my sole function now is getting this country back to a level higher than it's ever been. And I think we can do that.'
Musk has been a major donor to Trump's campaign and had previously been viewed as a close ally. However, their falling out led to calls for Musk's deportation from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and sparked debate across political circles.

Bitcoin Hits Record High Of $120,000 As Bullish Momentum Builds

Bitcoin breached $120,000 for the first time, with investor optimism increasing almost daily after it emerged from a narrow trading range that had left skeptics wondering whether the original cryptocurrency would regain the record-breaking momentum seen at the start of the year. After surging on the election of Donald Trump to a second US presidential term, Bitcoin had settled into a pattern of fluctuating on either side of $100,000 for several months. Concern about Trump's political and economic policies had helped to temper optimism over the pro-crypto agenda of his administration. Now with other risk assets such as stocks back around record highs, Bitcoin has also resumed its push higher. "This shift signals a maturing perspective on Bitcoin - not merely a speculative asset, but a macro hedge and a structurally scarce store of value," said George Mandres, senior trader at XBTO Trading LLC. "A surge in risk-on sentiment across equities, coupled with significant institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, has fueled this steady ascent, notably absent the sharp volatility of previous bull runs." The crypto market bellwether rose as much as 1.9% to $121,344, and is now up about 30% since December. Bitcoin more than doubled last year. Bitcoin's renewed momentum has also spilled over to smaller tokens - second-ranked Ether rose 1.5%, while XRP and Solana both increased about 2.7% around noon in Singapore on Monday. "Bitcoin's cleared $120,000, but the real test is $125,000," said Rachael Lucas, a crypto analyst at BTC Markets. While short-term profit booking can be expected, "the uptrend has fuel" driven by strong demand from exchange traded funds, she added. "Support at $112,000 and any dip looks like a buying opportunity, not a reversal." Helping to fuel the latest rally was the liquidation of bearish crypto bets at the end of the week. Traders who shorted Bitcoin bore the brunt of the rapid damage, with over $1 billion in positions wiped out, according to data from Coinglass. The token rose on the back of anticipation for what a Congressional committee dubbed "Crypto Week," where lawmakers in the US Congress are expected to debate and possibly vote on key cryptocurrency legislation. Some analysts aren't totally sold on the token's continued rise. "In my view, this isn't a macro-driven rally, but rather an isolated event," said Nicolai Sondergaard, a research analyst at Nansen. "That said, recent US policy developments such as fiscal expansion and expectations of further monetary easing have created a backdrop that is undeniably favorable for Bitcoin."

In Meloni's Italy, left-wing parties struggle

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ROME: Hundreds of thousands of people attended protests in Rome last month hailed as a show of strength against Giorgia Meloni's hard-right government, but Italy's divided opposition is struggling to make an impact. Almost three years after its historic election victory, Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party remains the most popular, polling at 29 percent -- above the 26 percent it secured in the September 2022 vote, according to the latest YouTrend survey. The prime minister herself tops polls of party leaders with an approval rating of 45 percent, according to Ipsos. The traditional left is struggling across Europe, where populist parties -- particularly the far-right -- have gained ground in recent years. And in Italy, which once had Western Europe's largest Communist Party, "there is a crisis in the left", commented Paolo Borioni, professor of political science at Rome's Sapienza University. He said left-wing parties had "severed their historical class ties", notably with those on lower incomes. The opposition is dominated by the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), currently polling at around 22 percent, and the Five Star Movement, with around 13 percent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Marc Lazar, a professor at Sciences Po Paris and Luiss University in Rome, said both are paying the price for their record in government, where they "disappointed, they did not address social issues". The PD adopted several measures that liberalised the labour market and cut public spending while in power after the 2013 election. Since then, they have lost over three million votes. For its part, the Five Star triumphed in 2018 elections on an anti-establishment message, only to ally with its declared enemies while in government. - Gaza, Ukraine - The PD chose a new leader after the 2022 elections, Elly Schlein, who has tacked further left, championing a national minimum wage and increased spending on education and healthcare. The Five Star under former premier Giuseppe Conte is also pushing for a minimum wage and a basic income for the most vulnerable. "Meloni, like all the right, claims to defend the people but only defends the big hedge funds, the big banks," Riccardo Ricciardi, president of the Five Star parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, told AFP. Both parties have also sought to mobilise public concern about rising defence budgets and Israel's offensive in Gaza. Five Star threw its weight behind a large protest in Rome last month against rearmament, an issue that Lazar noted "poses a challenge to Giorgia Meloni" in a country with a long tradition of peace movements. But divisions on the issue within the PD have undermined the opposition's ability to attack the government. Both the PD and Five Star also backed a huge protest on Gaza, but some PD supporters accused Schlein of being slow to take up the issue. "They lack courage," lamented Arianna D'Archivio, a 23-year-old student organiser at the rearmament protest. A third large demonstration took place for Pride, an explicit challenge to Meloni's socially conservative agenda. - Vote alliances - Meloni shares government with the smaller far-right League party and the centre-right Forza Italia, which gives her a majority in parliament. Despite their differences, PD and Five Star have tried teaming up at the ballot box, with joint candidates winning regional elections in Emilia-Romagna and Umbria in 2024, as well as the northern city of Genoa in May. They also both supported a recent referendum on labour market reform, although it failed due to low turnout. Schlein insisted the PD was making progress. "We will happily leave the polls to Meloni's right, but we are winning elections," she told AFP at a recent event. The PD performed better than expected in last year's European Parliament elections, winning 24 percent of the vote, compared to 29 percent for Meloni's party -- but with a historically low turnout. - Disconnected - For Dario Salvetti, an auto industry worker from Florence, the left is "broken", "disconnected from the masses" in a country where salaries have been stalled for decades and one in ten Italians is classified as living in poverty. For analyst Borioni, there is "no rightward shift in the population in Italy", just more people are abandoning the left. Activists meanwhile see the problem as politics, not the left itself. Francesca Ciuffi, a 27-year-old trade unionist in the textile hub of Prato, noted their recent successes in improving conditions for workers following strikes. "The big unions and left-wing parties have abandoned their role," she said.
