Mazda RX-7 Successor And Next Miata Spell Trouble For Toyota's GR Division

Mazda has a rich history of producing compact, fun-to-drive sports cars. Rarely have they been overpowered; instead, the Japanese marque has a knack for crafting sporty cars that emphasize balance and feel.
At the moment, the only modern sports car upholding this legacy is the MX-5 Miata ND, but not for much longer. The latest reports suggest that an RX-7 successor and an all-new Miata will add new, exciting chapters to Mazda's sports car legacy, but one is set to arrive some time before the other.
The beautiful Iconic SP concept shown by Mazda in 2023 will be the basis for what has been dubbed an RX-7 successor, and according to Motor Trend, this rotary-engine sports car is nearly complete. This confirms an earlier report from April that Mazda has made tremendous progress in making the rotary powertrain suitable for production in an era where emissions regulations are much stricter.
"You can expect Iconic SP will be a good successor for RX-7," said Ryuichi Umeshita, Mazda's Chief Technical Officer.
The production sports car is expected to feature an electric motor supported by a dual-rotor rotary engine; the latter will act as a generator, so the sports car won't have issues with range. It should produce around 365 horsepower, but more importantly, Mazda has ensured it can meet emissions regulations. With that sort of power, we can expect a fiery battle with the next Toyota GR Supra.
A potential second powertrain option will be of even greater interest to enthusiasts. This one will use the rotary engine as the primary power source, where it will actually power the wheels, not merely act as a generator.
Umeshita would not confirm the name of the new sports car, but didn't deny the RX-7 or RX-9 names could be used. When speaking about other sports car names from Mazda's past, he said: "There is very little possibility that we will name it Cosmo."
The sporty Cosmo was primarily sold in other markets between 1967 and 1996, with the most recent one being the flagship Mazda in Japan. It's likely the brand wants to reserve the Cosmo's legacy and not simply slap the name onto something much newer and sportier.
Whereas the production version of the Iconic SP could arrive around 2027, the next MX-5 is further away. It will still be a small, nimble roadster with a manual gearbox and a gas engine, likely based on the new Skyactiv-Z engine Mazda is working on, said to be ready in 2027.
Importantly, the Iconic SP and Miata will be separate cars, with Umeshita clarifying that the former won't cannibalize MX-5 sales. The production Iconic SP will be a larger, more expensive model than the Miata, especially because of its electrified powertrain and use of the more complex rotary engine.
Now all we need is for the MazdaSpeed 3 to make a comeback, too, which would mean the brand would have a full lineup of performance cars to take on Toyota's GR division.

The Model Y still came extremely close to the RAV4, as it lost out by an estimated 2,000 units. That's impressive considering that Model Y production slowed down when a facelift was rolled out mid-year. Sales of Tesla's crossover dropped 3% and the brief manufacturing halt likely had something to do with it. Munoz's research shows that not only did Toyota regain its sales title, but it also claimed five of the top 10 spots. After the Model Y, in third place was the Corolla Cross (AKA the Frontlander in some markets). The Corolla sedan took fifth, while the Hilux pickup was in sixth and the Camry, in eighth. The RAV4 was able to climb into first place thanks to an 11% sales increase year-over-year. That's a bit surprising, given that the model's current generation is in its final year. You don't expect to see such a hike on a (relatively) older model, especially with the promise of more tech and capability on the way. Essentially a frugality-forward trim of the more upscale Chrysler Pacifica minivan, the Voyager strips away most of that model's frills in exchange for a lower starting price. Aside from the Voyager's dearth of standard features and older sheetmetal, the two are fundamentally identical. The Pacifica and Voyager share the same 287-hp V-6 engine and surprisingly competent driving manners. A roomy passenger compartment awaits behind the Voyager's sliding rear doors, and second- and third-row fold-flat seats make cargo hauling easy. If you're looking for a hybrid option, the Pacifica is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, something that's not available in the Voyager. 0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 7.3 seconds In our testing, a Pacifica with this powertrain managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given that the Voyager forgoes some of the features that add weight to its brother, it's likely a little lighter than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to be marginally quicker. View Photos Chrysler Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG EPA City Rating: 19 mpg 19 mpg EPA Highway Rating: 28 mpg We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested (which is mechanically identical to the Voyager) achieved 31 mpg. The EPA hasn't released fuel economy information for the 2026 Voyager yet, but last year's model earned estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: As a budget minivan, the Voyager's cabin is largely devoid of fancy frills and features outside of heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. It might not be the most luxe front row, but what it lacks in luxury, it makes up for in comfort and spaciousness. Second Row: Similar to the front row, the Voyager's middle seats embrace function over opulence. You won't find the Pacifica's seatback entertainment or heated rear seats here. The middle row features Chrysler's Stow'n'Go seating system that allows the second-row seats to fold into the floor, creating a flat cargo area. Third Row (if applicable): The Voyager's third row is roomy, offering more legroom than the Kia Carnival. Like the second row, the rear seats also fold down to create a flush storage area. Cargo Capacity: Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So, while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able to accommodate the same 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seat up as the Pacifica does. This issue has become the third most-reported complaint in a J.D. Power survey, highlighting the need for more adaptable cupholder designs. 'In the survey we ask owners about 227 specific areas where they can report issues with their vehicles across 10 categories," he said. "Owners also have the ability to write in any problems that are not listed. Cupholders this year was the third most-reported of those 227 items ... The larger cups are also intruding on access to other areas in the center tunnel like storage spaces and controls in the center stack depending on the positioning of the cupholders.' Adjustable cupholders are certainly a way forward, but we haven't really seen that implementation since Porsche got rid of the T-Rex-arm style ones a few years ago. (BMWs had similar setups in the past, too.) Besides, we don't think those cupholders would have been able to fit today's typical Yeti tumbler anyway. With how big on average new cars are these days, there's absolutely no excuse for cupholders not keeping pace—after all, there should be room for them.
