All for her parents: Insp Intan only woman who completes UTK Training Series 1/2025
The eldest of five siblings said it is the desire to enable her parents to really enjoy their golden years without worrying about the future of their family that kept her going throughout the physically and mentally demanding Basic Close Protection Security Course Series 1/2025, conducted by the PDRM's elite Special Actions Unit (UTK).
'Every time I feel like giving up, I think of my parents. I believe I can provide for them and allow them to just stay home and enjoy life,' said the 29-year-old officer from Bagan Serai, Perak.
Speaking to reporters after the UTK Beret Award Ceremony and the closing of the course at Bukit Aman today, Insp Intan beamed with pride as the only female trainee to complete the four-month elite programme - a milestone proving that women too can withstand the rigours of top-tier police training.
The ceremony was officiated by Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department deputy director (Operations), DCP M.V. Sri Kumar.
Insp Intan shared that her interest in joining UTK began after watching a montage of the special unit during basic police training at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in March 2024.
'After completing the training at Pulapol, I served as an investigation officer at the Jerantut District Police headquarters for a month before deciding to enrol in this course. I'd be lying if I said I never felt like quitting, but the support and encouragement from my male colleagues helped me push through,' she said.
Also among the 36 graduates awarded the prestigious UTK beret were 24-year-old identical twin brothers, Constables Faiz and Farhan, from Bachok, Kelantan. Both of them, of course, credited their achievement to a shared goal and unwavering sibling support.
Farhan, who previously served with the Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department, said he joined UTK to test his own limits after working for three years as a police driver.
'My twin and I had planned to join the police force since our SPM days...and after three years in service, we decided to take on the UTK challenge,' he said.
Faiz added that having his twin brother alongside him during the toughest moments of training kept him going.
'Of course, there were days when I wanted to throw in the towel and just give up, but having my twin right beside me gave me strength again. We supported and motivated each other through everything,' he said.
A total of 36 trainees received their UTK berets today, marking their successful completion of the elite training course and formal induction into PDRM's most highly skilled special forces unit.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Sepanggar MP Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has firmly denied claims linking his wife to the recent death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, calling the allegation baseless and unbecoming of a Muslim lawmaker. He was responding to remarks made by Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan during a Dewan Rakyat debate, which Mustapha said were misleading and unfairly targeted someone no longer in public service. 'These claims not only confuse the public, but also damage the reputation of an individual who retired from government service months ago,' he said in a statement today. Mustapha, who is also deputy minister of higher education, clarified that his wife, Datin Rosnih Nasir, was formerly the principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar. She served at the school from March 20 to November 22, 2024 before retiring from the education sector. 'Since then, she has had no involvement in the school's administration or operations,' he added. He stressed that the incident involving Zara Qairina occurred on July 16 to 17, 2025, nearly eight months after his wife's retirement. 'Linking her to the incident is baseless and amounts to political manipulation,' he said. He urged all parties to verify information before making public accusations and not to exploit the tragedy for political purposes. 'Respect the ongoing investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and stop spreading false claims that can harm the reputation and emotional wellbeing of innocent individuals,' he said. Mustapha also offered his condolences to Zara Qairina's family, expressing hopes that justice would be served. Earlier, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said investigations were ongoing into the death of a female student at a school in Papar. The Form One student was believed to have fallen from the third floor of her hostel building. Zara Qairina was found critically injured around 3am on July 16 and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for treatment, where she later died.

Durian farmer caught with 919kg of Musang King, D24 from protected forest
KUANTAN: A durian farmer's plan to profit from Musang King and D24 durians planted illegally in the Gunung Benum Forest Reserve was thwarted when authorities intercepted a four-wheel-drive vehicle transporting the fruit yesterday. The four-hour patrol, which ended at 7am, led to the arrest of a 48-year-old man and the seizure of 919kg of durians worth about RM5,000. Pahang Forestry Department director Zainuddin Jamaluddin said the grade C and D durians were believed to be for local markets. Investigations showed the trees were located in Compartment 91 of the Gunung Benum Forest Reserve in Raub. He said the department seized the vehicle and the durians under the National Forestry Act 1984 for encroachment and unlawful extraction of forest produce. "The man who was detained was later released on police bail after providing a statement. "The investigating officer will continue with the probe before legal action is taken for removing forest produce (durians) without authorisation," he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. Daily patrols have been conducted since July 21 following the launch of an integrated operation with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Pahang State Enforcement Unit, the General Operations Force (PGA), Rela, and the Raub District and Land Office. "Gunung Benum Forest Reserve has become a site for illegal cultivation of durians and other fruit trees such as mangosteen, rambutan, petai, and kantan, believed to be planted by local residents," Zainuddin said. He said the department would not compromise with those involved in illegal activities in the reserve. More than 40 forestry personnel, along with officers from other agencies, are involved in the 60-day operation. Nine areas have been identified as hotspots for illegal farming. He urged communities living near the forest reserve not to harvest or carry out activities in the area. "Forest department enforcement units constantly patrol high-risk areas within the reserves. Aside from illegal farming, there are also individuals entering the forests for recreation. Entering a forest reserve requires a permit or official permission. "We have placed numerous signboards stating that entry without authorisation is an offence. Everyone must comply to avoid facing legal action," he said.

‘Governor's family not involved in student's death'
KOTA KINABALU: Istana Seri Kinabalu has denied claims that the state governor's family was involved in the recent death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir at SMA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar. In a statement, Istana Seri Kinabalu denied the claims circulating on various social media platforms, calling them baseless, irresponsible and defamatory to the Head of State's family. The statement warned the public against spreading unverified and slanderous information which could harm reputations. It also reminded the public that sharing false information may be subject to legal action under existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 'Any updates related to the investigation should be referred to the Royal Malaysia Police or the Ministry of Education to avoid confusion and misunderstanding among the public,' the statement read. Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the police have recorded the statements of 61 people, including students and teachers, in connection with the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina. He said they were also investigating claims of bullying, which could have caused the student's death. 'The investigations will take time as everything has to be done thoroughly, professionally, sensitively and properly with the help of counsellors. 'We are exploring all angles, including the circumstances leading to the girl's fall from her hostel building at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa in Papar on July 16,' he told reporters after the Sabah Warriors' Day celebration yesterday. He said the investigations were being conducted carefully as traumatised students were involved. However, he added, allegations that those implicated in this case included children of a state assemblyman and VVIPs, including himself, were unfounded. Meanwhile, Sabah Law Society (SLS) president Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin said the incident had raised concerns surrounding school safety as Zara Qairina's death did not occur in a vacuum. 'It has raised questions of school safety, student welfare and institutional response. 'It has also led the public to wonder whether the systems meant to protect children are functioning as they should,' he said in a statement. Mohamed Nazim said the association is aware that the family has appointed legal counsel, and that they fully respect their right to pursue justice through lawful means. 'We are also monitoring the progress of this case closely and will continue to do so. 'Our stand is clear: This case must not be swept under the rug and it must not be forgotten,' he added. SLS extended its condolences to the family of Zara Qairina, who died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here a day after she was found unconscious in a drain at her school hostel.
