KPKM proposes short-term agriculture censuses for better policy coordination
KPKM secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak highlighted the importance of frequent data collection following the findings of the 2024 Agriculture Census, which provides detailed insights at both national and district levels.
'We have discussed with DOSM how future censuses can be implemented. For federal-level policymaking, we need long-term statistics over five to 10 years. However, for state and district-level execution, data must be refreshed more often. Smaller-scale censuses would be cost-effective,' he said during a press conference.
The 2024 census offers granular data on farming demographics, crop types, land ownership, and mechanisation adoption. 'We now have hyperlocal data. In Senaling, Kuala Pilah, for instance, we know the number of farmers, their crops, and production levels. This helps state governments and village leaders make informed decisions to boost yields,' Isham explained.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof previously announced that short-term agricultural surveys would begin in 2026 to enhance sector monitoring.
Additionally, KPKM plans to introduce a cooperative-based farm management model to consolidate smallholders and landowners, improving productivity through collective government assistance. 'With over 220,000 padi farmers nationwide averaging two hectares each, grouping them could enhance efficiency and income,' Isham noted.
The success of this model depends on accurate data and strong federal-state collaboration with local farming communities. - Bernama

KUANTAN: Pahang emerged as Malaysia's second-highest contributor to agriculture sales in 2023, generating RM25.12 billion, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Isham Jalil threatens to sue Madani cytros for defaming him as Najib's adviser to acquire 25 Boeing planes
FORMER UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil is on the look-out for lawyers who would assist him to draft letters of demand (LOD) for Madani cybertroopers who accused him of acting as an adviser to incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak in his 2017 negotiation with Donald Trump who was the then US president. Isham who was once a special officer to Najib claimed that the cybertroopers had slandered him given he was 'never directly involved in the Boeing acquisition negotiations nor was he part of Najib's delegation to the US'. 'I like it when PH (Pakatan Harapan) politicians and their 20-sen walanon gang (hardcore PMX supporters) do this kind of work. Because I have the opportunity to sue them and make millions,' he penned on his Facebook page. 'When I win the suit, I will buy a motorbike.' Setting the record straight, Isham clarified that Najib did not buy the 25 Boeing planes as claimed by detractors but in fact, he had 'signed a non-binding MOU (memorandum of understanding' instead. 'We didn't buy but leased 16 from the international leasing firm that bought the aircraft with terms depending on the current market conditions,' revealed the former UMNO information chief who was expelled from the party on Dec 7, 2023 for opposing the party's collaborations with DAP in elections. 'The then Malaysia Airlines CEO can confirm this.' Isham who has in recent times become a harsh critic of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim further took a swipe at the Madani government 'for directly buying 80 aircraft through government-linked company (GLC) Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) by incurring a debt exceeding RM100 bil'.' For the record, MAG had in 2016 placed an initial order for 25 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft with 13 planes having been received since November 2023 while the remainder are to be delivered progressively until 2027. However, MAG had on March 20 this year finalised an additional order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with deliveries expected to take place from 2025 to 2035, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Although only 30 planes were originally planned, critics believe that the recent order for another 30 appear to be a last-minute add-on which is likely to please Washington in order to unlock tariff relief from 25% to 19% – a dangerous precedent where strategic assets are used for political appeasement. 'The current total fleet of MAS is approximately 80 aircraft with many years left before the expiration date,' he justified. 'You want to buy twice as many aircraft and double the fleet size with hundreds of billions in debt even though your profit has dropped to only RM54 mil?' Added Isham' Our airline's record is not good and always loses. Moreover, the aviation industry is both instable and full of risks. 'And yet you still want to take on debts amounting to more than 10% of the country's total accumulated debt because you want to buy 80 more aircraft? Chicken egg prices in Kedah stable despite subsidy removal
ALOR STAR: Supplies and prices of chicken eggs across various grades have remained stable in Kedah, despite the discontinuation of the egg subsidy. Checks by the "New Straits Times" at urban hypermarkets in Alor Star and Padang Terap found no noticeable price hikes or disruptions in supply. Taman Saga Mydin Hypermarket assistant manager Anuar Abu Hassan said the only difference following the removal of the subsidy was the lifting of purchase limits that were previously imposed. "Previously, due to subsidy controls, customers were limited to buying two trays of 30 eggs per person. "Since the subsidy ended, that restriction has been lifted, prices have not changed and supply remains stable. "There has been no panic buying or complaints. Prices are affordable," he said at the hypermarket in Alor Star. As of today, the hypermarket lists Grade A eggs at RM12.60 per tray of 30 eggs, Grade B at RM11.99, Grade C at RM10.99, and Grade D at RM9.99. In Simpang Kuala, a wholesaler who wished to be known only as Tan, said prices and supplies of eggs have remained unchanged since the removal of price controls. "Prices are now based on supply and demand since the subsidy ended. So far, the situation has been stable," she said, adding that Grade A eggs were priced at RM12.30 per tray of 30 eggs at her store. In Kuala Nerang, wholesaler Zulkifli Shuib, 35, said supplies for Grade B chicken eggs were ample, adding that there have been no price changes at the wholesale level or from producers. "We're selling at RM11.40 per tray of 30 eggs for Grade B. So far, there's been no difference in prices, and supply has been consistent throughout Padang Terap," he said. Sundry store employee Yusuf Zahir, 41, said retail prices of eggs in Kuala Nerang town had remained stable. He said Grade C eggs were priced at RM11.40 for a tray of 30, while Grade B and Grade A eggs were sold at RM12 and RM12.60 per tray, respectively. On April 30, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry announced that the egg subsidy would be discontinued starting Aug 1. The decision was made after factoring in the industry's commitment to ensuring a stable and sufficient egg supply following the stabilisation of production costs.
