Two booked over Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan scuffle granted bail

A magistrate court Monday granted bail to two persons booked over the scuffle inside the premises of the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan last week. The additional chief judicial magistrate granted bail to Nitin Deshmukh, a supporter of NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad, and Sarjerao Takle, supporter of BJP legislator Gopichand Padalkar. On July 17, a feud between Padalkar and Awhad over comments made against each other had turned violent with their supporters entering a brawl in the legislative complex. Following this, an FIR was filed. Lawyers Sneha Bhange and Kunjan Makwana for Deshmukh and lawyers Jayant Bardeskar and Datta Mane for Takle, had submitted that they both had roots in society, their further custody was not required in the case and that they will abide by the conditions set by the court. 'On perusal of record, it reveals that the accused is in police custody since 18.07.2025 to 21.07.2025. Moreover, nothing has been found out during investigation regarding motive or other accompanied, investigating agency failed to find out on whose behest they are performing this act in spite of getting ample police custody. During custodial interrogation nothing has come on record, who is theother member of alleged unlawful assembly,' the court said. It further said that the probe now is of a technical nature including collecting CCTV footage and keeping them behind bars is of no use, when they are ready to abide by the conditions. The court directed that they be released on a personal and surety bond of Rs 25,000 each and remain present at the police station every month till the chargesheet is filed.

7/11 train bomb blasts case: Acquitted man demands re-investigation through SIT

Abdul Wahid Shaikh, the sole person to be acquitted by the special court in 2015 in the Mumbai train bomb blasts case, on Tuesday demanded the formation of an SIT headed by a High Court judge to re-investigate the case. Shaikh raised this demand a day after the Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 accused in the case, noting that the prosecution had utterly failed to prove the case. Nine years after he was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), the special court in 2015 cleared him of all charges related to the serial blasts case. The court had sentenced five of the 12 men to death and seven to life imprisonment. One of the death row convicts died in 2021. On Monday, the high court released all 12, noting the prosecution utterly failed to prove the case and it was 'hard to believe the accused committed the crime' Shaikh, who works as a teacher, has been vocal about the torture inflicted by the ATS on 12 persons. He had penned a book- 'Begunah Qaidi'- while he was behind bars. The special bench of the HC also stated that the accused had been tortured to extort confessional statements. 'The government should re-investigate the case by setting up a Special Investigation Team to be headed by a High Court judge to ensure that the real perpetrators behind the train bomb blasts are arrested,' Shaikh told PTI. His other demands include an apology from the ATS for the botched investigation, Rs 19 crore in compensation to the 12 men who spent 19 years behind bars despite being innocent and government jobs and houses for them. 'Though very late, these people finally got justice. The HC verdict exposed the falsehood of ATS', he said. Shaikh expressed sympathy and demanded justice for the family members of the victims killed and maimed in the synchronised blasts that ripped through Mumbai local trains at various locations on the western line on July 11, 2006, killing more than 180 persons and injuring several others. He remembered the late Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinod Bhat, one of the investigating officers in the train bomb blast case. In his book, Shaikh had claimed that Bhat was being forced to fabricate evidence and create false witnesses against the accused persons. 'Today, the soul of ACP Bhat must be happy. He ended his life in August 2006 due to pressure to frame innocent persons on the same railway track where bomb blasts had occurred,' he claimed, adding that the suicide was recorded as accidental death at Dadar railway police station.

Court sends Chaitanya Baghel, son of ex-Chhattisgarh CM, to judicial custody in liquor 'scam' case

RAIPUR: A special court here on Tuesday remanded Chaitanya Baghel, son of senior Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in a 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case linked to the alleged liquor scam. Chaitanya was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 18 following a search at his house which he shares with his father in Bhilai town of Durg district in the state. The accused was produced before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (VI) Damarudhar Chouhan on Tuesday on expiry of his ED custody, the central probe agency's counsel Saurabh Kumar Pande told reporters. During his custodial remand, Chaitanya was interrogated and confronted with statements and documents during which he conceded at many points. There was not much left for interrogation so the ED requested the court for his judicial custody, he said. The court sent him to jail in judicial custody till August 4, he added. If required, he can be questioned by the agency with the court's permission, he said. The ED claimed in a statement that Chaitanya "handled" more than Rs 1,000 crore worth of "proceeds of crime" generated from a liquor "scam" in the state and used Rs 16.7 crore for the development of his real estate project.
