Vietnam to appoint leaders for newly-merged localities
HANOI: The Vietnamese government will appoint chairpersons and vice chairpersons for newly-merged localities to implement a two-tier local administration system starting from July 1, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh (pic) said on Friday (June 20).
Binh made the statement while responding to questions from National Assembly deputies during an ongoing session of the top legislature in the capital Hanoi, Vietnam News Agency reported.
He said the government will also reorganise headquarters and facilities for newly established provincial and communal-level agencies.
Last week, the National Assembly passed a resolution on merging provincial-level administrative units, reducing the number of provinces and centrally-run cities from 63 to 34. - Xinhua

Senior military official Miao Hua purged from top ruling body
TOP legislature has voted to remove senior military official Miao Hua from the Central Military Commission, its highest-level military command body, according to a statement published by Xinhua. Miao, 69, was put under investigation for 'serious violations of discipline' in November. The former political ideology chief of the People's Liberation Army was also suspended from his post. The Xinhua statement yesterday did not contain any other details, but the move marks another stage in President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption purge of China's military, in which over a dozen PLA generals and a handful of defence industry executives have been implicated. Miao's photo had been removed from the senior leadership page of the Chinese defence ministry's website in recent weeks. He was also removed from China's national legislature for 'serious violations of discipline and law,' according to a communique released by the legislature last month. 'The Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission held a military representative conference on March 14 this year and decided to remove Miao Hua from his position as a representative of the 14th National People's Congress,' the statement said. Miao was stationed in the coastal province of Fujian when Xi worked there as a local official. Xi personally elevated Miao to the Central Military Commission. Another Central Military Commission member and China's second-ranking general, He Weidong, has not been seen in public since the March 11 closing ceremony of the annual parliamentary sessions in Beijing. Since then, he has not appeared at a series of high-level Politburo and military public engagements. He is the third-most powerful commander of the People's Liberation Army and is considered a close associate of Xi, who is also the army's commander- in-chief. Canadian PM says negotiations with U.S. "complex"
OTTAWA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday called the negotiations with the United States "complex" when he responded to the announcement of U.S. President Donald Trump to terminate all trade talks with Canada with potential new tariffs. "We'll continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interest of Canadians," Carney said to local media. "It's a negotiation." Trump announced Friday that the United States would terminate all trade talks with Canada due to Canada's digital services tax on U.S. tech companies. Canada's digital services tax on American technology companies is a direct and blatant attack on the United States, said Trump in a post on social media. Set to take effect on June 30, the digital services tax would have U.S. companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb pay a three percent levy on revenue from Canadian users. Canada and the United States have been in negotiations to get Trump to lift the tariffs on Canadian goods, which have already led to major economic shrinking. Canada's real gross domestic product edged down 0.1 percent in April, according to Statistics Canada. Transportation equipment manufacturing subsector was the largest contributor to the decline, coinciding with lower exports of passenger cars and light trucks as some motor vehicle manufacturers scaled back production amid uncertainty related to tariffs imposed on motor vehicle exports to the United States.
