Starbucks tells corporate staff in US and Canada to work in office at least four days a week

The Guardian15-07-2025
Starbucks has ordered its corporate staff to work from the office at least four days a week from late September and is offering cash payments to those who choose to quit instead.
Brian Niccol, the chief executive of the Seattle-headquartered coffee chain, said many of its employees would be required to work in the office for a minimum of four days a week, up from three, from Monday to Thursday. This will apply to its Seattle and Toronto support centres and regional offices in North America.
'We do our best work when we're together,' Niccol said in a message to employees, referred to as 'partners', on the company's website on 're-establishing an in-office culture'. 'We want leaders and people managers to be physically present with their teams.'
He added: 'Being in person also helps us build and strengthen our culture. As we work to turn the business around, all these things matter more than ever.'
The four-day office policy will come into effect on 29 September. Niccol, who has been in the job for almost a year, has said he wants to take Starbucks back to its coffeehouse roots by improving customers' experience in its cafes and reducing reliance on mobile and takeaway orders.
He said: 'We know we're asking a lot of every partner as we work to turn the business around. And we understand that the updated in-office culture may not work for everyone.
'To support those who decide to 'opt out', we're offering a one-time voluntary exit programme with a cash payment for partners who make this choice.' The company did not state the size of the sum.
In February, the company asked its vice-presidents who were working remotely to move to Seattle or Toronto. It is now extending this requirement to all support centre 'people leaders', who are expected to relocate within 12 months.
In its previous announcement, Starbucks set out plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees and close several hundred open or vacant job positions, the biggest job cuts in its history, in order to reduce costs as it struggled with rising inflation and economic uncertainty.
Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, including coffee roasters and warehouse staff.

Niccol faced environmental criticism last year for his 1,000-mile commute to work in the office three days a week. The company allowed him to travel in from his home in Newport Beach, California, to its head office in Seattle via a private jet instead of relocating.
Since then, he has bought a home in Seattle and is frequently seen at the company's headquarters, a spokesperson told the Associated Press.

Fed's Kugler resigning from Fed effective Aug 8

Aug 1 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve said Friday that Governor Adriana Kugler is resigning early from her term and will exit the central bank on Aug. 8, potentially shaking up what was already a fractious succession process for Fed leadership amid difficult relations with President Donald Trump. The Fed said in a statement that Kugler, who became a governor in September 2023, will leave before her term's conclusion, which was scheduled for Jan. 31, 2026. In a press release, the Fed said Kugler will return to Georgetown University as a professor next autumn. Kugler did not attend this week's rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee meeting, which is unusual. Kugler's early exit may shake up the timeline for the succession process now surrounding Chair Jerome Powell, whose term ends next May. Trump has threatened to fire Powell repeatedly believing interest rates should be much lower than they are. Trump will now get to select a Fed governor to replace Kugler and finish out her term. Some speculation had centered on the idea Trump might pick a potential future chair to fill that slot. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Fed appointment. In a letter to Trump announcing her resignation, Kugler wrote 'I am proud to have tackled this role with integrity, a strong commitment to serving the public, and with a data-driven approach strongly based on my expertise in labor markets and inflation.' Kugler's time at the Fed was a challenging one as central bankers raised rates aggressively to combat high inflation pressures. Those high rates have put them in the crosshairs of Trump and have caused economic challenges, although inflation pressures have moved much closer to the 2% target.

Stocks slump on latest tariffs, soft jobs data

NEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks slumped on Friday, with the S&P on track for its biggest daily percentage decline in more than three months as new U.S. tariffs on dozens of trading partners and a surprisingly weak jobs report spurred selling pressure. Also weighing on equities was a tumble in (AMZN.O), opens new tab shares after the company posted quarterly results but failed to meet lofty expectations for its Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit. Just hours before the tariff deadline on Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing duties on U.S. imports from countries, including Canada, Brazil, India and Taiwan, in his latest round of levies as countries attempted to seek ways to reach better deals. Further denting confidence in the economic picture, data showed U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in July while the prior month's report was revised sharply lower, indicating the labor market may be starting to crack. The report significantly pushed up expectations the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its September meeting. "There's no way to pretty-up this report. Previous months were revised significantly lower where the labor market has been on stall-speed," said Brian Jacobsen, Chief Economist at Annex Wealth Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. "Last year the Fed messed up by not cutting in July so they did a catch-up cut at their next meeting. They'll likely have to do the same thing this year." According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab lost 101.60 points, or 1.60%, to end at 6,237.79 points, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), opens new tab lost 472.78 points, or 2.24%, to 20,649.67. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), opens new tab fell 543.97 points, or 1.23%, to 43,587.01. Market expectations the Fed will cut rates by at least 25 basis points at its September meeting stood at 80.9%, according to CME's FedWatch Tool, opens new tab, up from 37.7% in the prior session. Other data from the Institute for Supply Management showed U.S. manufacturing contracted for a fifth straight month in July and factory employment dropped to the lowest level in five years. Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq recorded their biggest single-day percentage declines since April 21 and all three major indexes were on track for weekly losses. The CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX), opens new tab, also known as Wall Street's fear gauge, climbed to as much as 21.90, its highest since June 23. Amazon was the biggest drag on the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq and pushed the consumer discretionary index (.SPLRCD), opens new tab, down nearly 4% as the worst performing of the 11 major S&P 500 sectors. Also reporting earnings was Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab, which fell after it posted a current-quarter revenue forecast well above Wall Street estimates, but CEO Tim Cook warned U.S. tariffs would add $1.1 billion in costs over the period. Stocks briefly extended declines after Trump said he ordered the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Erika L. McEntarfer, to be fired in the wake of the jobs data. In contrast to the broad declines, Reddit (RDDT.N), opens new tab surged after it reported quarterly results that exceeded Street expectations, boosted by an AI-focused advertising strategy and strong user engagement.

Law firm Quinn Emanuel accused of turning on ex-client in fintech case

Aug 1 (Reuters) - A financial technology provider previously represented by Quinn Emanuel accused the law firm of betraying its loyalties and violating ethics rules by taking the case of a former executive suing the company over his termination. In a filing, opens new tab in the case in California federal court on Thursday, Pagaya Technologies (PGY.O), opens new tab asked a judge to disqualify Quinn Emanuel from representing Hugh Edmundson in the lawsuit he filed in June. In the new filing Pagaya and its hedge fund affiliate Theorem Technology accused Quinn Emanuel of breaking attorney ethics rules in its new work for Edmundson, a former top executive at Theorem. Pagaya had acquired Theorem last year. 'The firm is a repeat offender, having been disqualified multiple times for this exact misconduct,' lawyers for Pagaya and Theorem at law firm Gibson Dunn wrote. Pagaya said Quinn Emanuel had 'brazenly violated its ethical obligations by turning around and suing its own client.' Quinn Emanuel in a statement on Friday said "Pagaya is no longer a client, and our current work is not related to what we did for them before." In a statement on Friday, a spokesperson for law firm Gibson Dunn said "Quinn Emanuel is suing its former client over matters about which it previously advised — a clear conflict of interest that courts have not hesitated to disqualify firms for in the past." Last year, Quinn Emanuel was disqualified from representing Elon Musk's social media platform X in a lawsuit accusing data-scraping company Bright Data of illegally copying and selling content. The law firm had previously represented Bright Data in another lawsuit. In an April letter from Quinn Emanuel to Edmundson's attorneys, which was included in the court file, the firm had said the "suggestion of a conflict on the part of Quinn Emanuel is false and inaccurate." The firm also said it had set up "appropriate ethical screens out of an abundance of caution" to separate its prior work for Pagaya with its representation of Edmundson. Edmundson's lawsuit accused Pagaya and Theorem of wrongful termination, retaliation and other claims stemming from his firing in April from Theorem, where he was chief investment officer. Edmundson founded Theorem in 2014. Edmundson alleged that 'almost immediately after the merger closed, defendants began systematically dismantling Theorem's independence and strategic decision-making authority.' Quinn Emanuel provided legal work last year to Pagaya on non-compete and non-solicitation provisions related to Theorem employees, Pagaya said. It further alleged that Quinn Emanuel's prior work for the company has created a "direct and incurable conflict of interest." In Thursday's court filing, Pagaya said that Edmundson's lawsuit was baseless and that its claims are governed by a binding arbitration agreement. The case is Hugh Edmundson v.
