Mark Nicolson enjoying Brora Rangers' Premier Sports Cup campaign as he reveals it could be his last season
The Breedon Highland League champions take on League One side Kelty Hearts on Tuesday night at Dudgeon Park after starting their section with a 2-0 home loss to Kilmarnock on Saturday.
This is defender Nicolson's ninth season with Brora Rangers, and the 37-year-old, who spent a decade with Elgin City earlier in his career, revealed this may be his final season.
He said: 'It's good to be involved in the League Cup. Sometimes you maybe take these sort of games for granted and I've been fortunate to play in these type of games a fair bit during my career, and you've got to enjoy them.
'This is my ninth season at Brora. I'm getting on a bit and I'm 95% sure this will be my last season before retiring.
'I want to make the most of it and enjoy every minute, because I'm pretty certain this will be it for me.'
This is the third time Brora have competed in the League Cup group stage.
The Cattachs have yet to win a game – although they did record two draws in 2020, but lost the subsequent penalty shoot-outs for a bonus point.
Nicolson is hopeful Brora can pick up that maiden victory and believes the clash with Kelty provides a decent opportunity to do that.
He added: 'We don't have a particularly great record in the competition, but hopefully we can get that first win.
'This game against Kelty and East Fife next week are two teams we feel we can match, so I don't see why we can't win those games.
'We've got good players in our squad who could play at a higher level and hopefully we can show that.
'We're a confident team and we're comfortable playing anyone at home.
'I'm hopeful the Kelty game will be more even.
'We know they're a good side with some really good players, but we feel we're closer to them in terms of ability than we were compared with Kilmarnock.
'Kelty are part-time like us and hopefully we should have more of the ball and be able to create a few more chances than we did on Saturday.
'We won't underestimate Kelty, but we're confident in our ability playing at home.'
Brora are set to welcome back James Wallace and Alex Cooper for the game against Kelty, while they have also secured winger Max Ewan on a new contract until the summer of 2028.
The 24-year-old joined the Cattachs from Nairn County in August 2021 and has helped them win the Highland League, three R Davidson (Banchory) Highland League Cups and two North of Scotland Cups.
Meanwhile, the Highland League's other Premier Sports Cup representative, Brechin City, are also in action on Tuesday night.
The Hedgemen take on Championship outfit Queen's Park at Lesser Hampden.
Brechin were beaten 7-0 by Falkirk in their opening League Cup fixture on Saturday, while Queen's Park lost 2-1 against Spartans.

Airdrie boss: New striker a priority as side prepare for Ross County without recognised centre forward
The Diamonds host Ross County on Saturday in the Championship curtain-raiser but are light up top Rhys McCabe admits Airdrie priority is bringing in a new striker as the Diamonds prepare for Saturday's Championship opener at home to Ross County without a recognised striker. The player-boss watched his side crash out of the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday to League One Alloa Athletic, with the Wasps pouncing on Sean McGinty's error to grab a 3-2 victory in the 89th minute at New Broomfield. Airdrie played without a striker as midfielders Chris Mochrie, Lewis McGrattan and Dylan Williams all had a shot at playing through the middle over the 90 minutes. Last season's star striker Ben Wilson sealed a summer switch to Welsh side The New Saints and the club are yet to replace him, while former Aberdeen frontman Aaron Reid is out injured. The club are also still coming to terms with long-term club captain and creative force Adam Frizzell leaving for Derry City last month. So McCabe is well aware of his side's shortcoming ahead of the Staggies visiting. "Frizz has been a big, big part of how we've played over the last few years. His creativity and the way he leads by example on the pitch is a big miss. "To lose your source of goals as well - and Aaron Reid is still out injured and won't be back until the end of September - is tough. "We are playing Mochrie through the middle or Euan Henderson and we are trying to play a system that allows us to not kill somebody by playing them out of position. "But, right now, we don't have a recognised striker in the squad, which is an area we are trying to fill. "We need to make sure it is the right one and we are not jumping in too quickly to get somebody that ends up being a waste of a number in the squad. "They have to add value and challenge whoever is in the squad. When Aaron Reid comes back or when the likes of Mochrie or Hendo are playing there, there should be competition. We shouldn't just be sticking someone there because we've got nobody else. "I don't think we are a million miles away from being set and ready for the season. "We are certainly short in a couple of areas but we aren't making excuses. "We've gone and beaten Dundee, we won every game up until this one so we can't use that as an excuse just because we've lost a game."

Montgomery reflects on debut goal for Livingston
It came on his debut for Livingston who thrashed Scottish League One side, Kelty Hearts, in their final Group H game in the Premier Sports Cup. Montgomery slotted the club's second goal in the 6-0 win, the strike hitting the back of the net after 27 minutes. The Livingston-born, 23-year-old, currently on loan from Celtic, is desperate for a long run in David Martindale's newly-promoted team. The manager has certainly been impressed with Montgomery's attitude since signing and the player, who can slot into left-back, left wing-back or on the left wing, could be a big asset for the West Lothian club. Reflecting on the emphatic win, Montgomery said: 'What more can you ask for? Six goals and a clean sheet. A very good start for me and a very good end to the group for us.' Montgomeny put pen to paper at the Home of the Set Fare Arena last week and is a product of the Glasgow side's youth system. First team experience has been gained during loans with Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Motherwell and Queen's Park as well as south of the Border with Fleetwood Town. The player has also logged appearances with Celtic and ambitious Montgomery said the Livingston boss indicted how he wanted the club to play, on the front foot, pressing, and they certainly did in the first-half against depleted Kelty. Livingston were 4-0 ahead at the break but then failed to hit the net again until late-on. Montgomery admitted it was difficult to put your finger on what happened, but added: 'Second-half we made a few changes and scored a couple of goals and probably should have had more.' So, why is he at Livingston? The player said: 'The quality at Celtic is undeniable, the squad is brilliant, but, for me I want to play games and I thought this was the place to do it. 'I have still got a couple of years at Celtic, but I felt I needed as many minutes as possible and I felt this place (Livingston) was the best chance for me to do that.' A few other clubs were interested – in England and in Scotland – in signing the versatile player who said: 'Obviously, I played against Livingston last season when I was at Queen's Park. 'They play attractive football, have good football players and he (the manager) has managed to attract boys that have played at the top level, at a good level. 'We start the proper season next week and I am looking forward to that. We will go to Kilmarnock and take it to them.
