Trade buzz around Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram and a possible move to the Vancouver Canucks has recently intensified—but NHL insider David Pagnotta has poured cold water on the speculation, suggesting the connection is outdated and unlikely to revive anytime soon.

During a recent appearance on the 'Sekeres & Price' podcast, Pagnotta admitted that Vancouver's interest in Bowen Byram wasn't imagined, but clarified it was more relevant during the 2023–24 season. 'So, with the Canucks, I think it was real more so in the season than it was this past June,' he said. 'But honestly, for me, it would probably be something coming out of left field once all is said and done if something does happen with the Canucks.
'
His comments come as the Sabres elected to take Byram, a restricted free agent, to arbitration—effectively blocking other teams from submitting offer sheets. That decision handed Byram control over the term of his next deal, letting him choose between a one-year or two-year contract.

While Buffalo isn't openly putting Byram on the trade block, they haven't shut the door on potential offers either. General manager Kevyn Adams emphasized the team remains flexible: 'If there's a deal out there that makes sense for us … we're open to it.'

But it's not just about stockpiling future assets. Adams made it clear the Sabres want impact players in return, particularly upgrades on the offensive front. According to Pagnotta, 'The Sabres want to upgrade themselves up front,' and while '(the arbitration) eliminates the offer sheet threat... it doesn't eliminate the fact that they may still end up moving him.'

Adding more fuel to the fire, Pagnotta noted that Byram 'would prefer a change of scenery,' potentially signaling some behind-the-scenes tension. However, despite this, he insists a Canucks trade is highly unlikely at this stage.
The situation remains fluid, but for now, Byram appears set to stay in Buffalo—unless the right deal comes along to shake things loose.
