EXCLUSIVE A fatal mistake that led to bloody murder of a young mother: How wannabe influencer tracked down his wife who was in hiding... before slaughtering her in the street

Daily Mail5 hours ago

A wannabe influencer who callously murdered his wife as she pushed their baby in his pram abused his social media knowhow to exploit a fatal error after she fled his violent, controlling behaviour.
Tech-savvy Habibur Masum appeared to be embracing life in Britain after moving from Bangladesh to study for a masters in digital marketing in 2022.
But behind closed doors he was an aggressive bully who had already confessed to a doctor that he felt like killing Kulsuma Akter.
He subjected her to a campaign of abuse, banning her from wearing make-up or even drinking tea.
In November 2023 the obsessive former marketing student flew into a rage over an innocuous text message the 27-year-old had received from a bakery colleague asking if she was working.
Chillingly he warned her: 'I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me'
Consumed by unfounded jealousy, Masum held a knife to her throat as she clutched their newborn child in a desperate act of self-preservation.
After a worried relative called police, he was arrested and charged with assault and making threats to kill.
But despite a Crown Prosecution Service lawyer urging magistrates to lock him up on remand, he was granted bail on condition he stayed away from Ms Akter and their Oldham home.
Fearing for her life, Ms Akter and the couple's baby son were given sanctuary at a refuge in a secret location.
A furious Masum vowed to track her down, taking sinister advantage of his digital skills to stalk and then fatally dupe her online.
First he took advantage of her failure to switch off the location on her Snapchat account to establish she was living in Bradford.
Ms Akter reported the new death threats to police, and arrangements were put in place to rehouse her.
Meanwhile after taunting her that he had found the refuge, Masum laid a false trail to trick her into believing he was on holiday in Spain.
Believing it was safe to take their son out amongst the Saturday afternoon shoppers on April 6 last year, to her horror Ms Akter - who was due to be rehomed for her own safety two days later - was instead confronted by Masum.
In a brazen daylight attack of barbaric ferocity which shocked the nation he repeatedly plunged the blade into his screaming partner, stabbing her more than 25 times before slitting her throat.
The killer was filmed dancing at an event in a TikTok video shared last year
After the 'cold-blooded' killing, callous Masum was captured on CCTV grinning as he boarded a bus to make his escape, having left his wife for dead and abandoning their baby in the street.
Police launched a manhunt and Masum - who had shaved off his beard - was traced two days later after seeking treatment for 'lockjaw' 170 miles away at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire.
Masum, 26, pleaded guilty to his wife's manslaughter and possession of a bladed article earlier this month but denied murder on the grounds he had lost control.
But yesterday a jury at Bradford Crown Court unanimously convicted him of murder after deliberating for less than six hours.
Masum - who was also found guilty of stalking, assault and threats to kill - wiped away tears in the dock before being remanded back into custody ahead of his sentencing.
Despite two police forces being made aware of the threats Ms Akter had been receiving, a probe by the Independent Office for Police Conduct found there had been no breach of professional standards.
But campaigners said her brutal killing could have been prevented, saying the latest example of a woman murdered by her abusive partner once again underlined the need for change.
'Her death was preventable, and the loss of Kulsuma is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of honour-based abuse and coercive control,' a spokeswoman for charity Karma Nirvana said.

'We must do more to protect women like her.'
The organisation - which helps victims of honour-based violence - said her tragic killing was a 'stark reminder' of the need to give greater protection to those fleeing abuse.
Bradford West Labour MP Naz Shah said violence against women was 'a cancer that needs eradicating'.
'Kulsuma came to Bradford trying to find safety and her attacker found her,' she told the BBC.
'To keep women safe we need to change the culture of misogyny and domestic violence.'
With his slick social media skills and confident persona, Masum had appeared to be embracing life in Britain.
Growing up in the city of Sylhet, Masum is understood to have studied English literature in Bangladesh, working for a wedding planning firm and as a content writer for a digital marketing agency.
In 2022 the self-styled 'adventure lover' began studying for a masters in digital marketing at the University of Bedfordshire, sharing vlogs about life in the UK.
One shows him admiring the wide range of Bangladesh-made clothes in Primark before trying on a range of winter jumpers.
In another, Masum is seen filming himself as snow falls, warning his paltry 14 YouTube subscribers not too 'stay out in the cold too long' as they could get chest problems.

In further clips he looks every inch the proud dad, including one to his 4,300 Facebook followers on how to prepare a hospital bag for 'your newborn baby'.
Yet behind the carefully crafted image, Masum was a violent and possessive bully who controlled and terrorised Ms Akter, who had followed him from Bangladesh and spoke little English.
More than a year before murdering her, Masum had told a doctor he 'felt like he would kill her'.
He stopped her from wearing make-up and would check her phone to see who she had been talking to, relatives said.
Ms Akter had to ask permission from her husband before going out and even stopped her drinking tea, because he didn't like the drink.
During one argument he divorced her under Islamic law by 'saying it out loud three times', but later said she was confused and he had only said it twice, his trial heard.
In July 2023 - shortly before their son was born - she went to stay with her brother because of Masum's controlling behaviour, leading him to threaten to harm himself with a knife.
She later returned to the flat, with Masum posting photographs of himself cradling their newborn son.
But things 'got worse after the baby was born', her sister-in-law Minara Begum said.
It culminated in the jealous rage which would see Masum charged with making threats to kill.
Turning his tech knowhow to the most sinister use imaginable, Masum established where she had sought sanctuary via the location on her Snapchat account.
On April 2 she showed her social worker a Snapchat message he had sent showing an image of the refuge.
With it he had written: 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day.
'You do not know what you have lost but one day you will understand.
'Nobody will love you like I do.'
Then just over a week before the murder he had shared a video on his YouTube channel, vlogging his trip from Manchester to Barcelona.
In reality the clip was part of a sinister scheme to trick Ms Akter into believing he was out of the country and that she would be safe to carry on with daily life.
Her killing has left her grieving family back in Bangladesh 'completely devastated' and struggling to comprehend how she had been taken from them in such brutal fashion halfway around the world.
Her cousin, Aftab Miah, told the Daily Mail that Ms Akter – the youngest of five siblings – was 'a lovely girl and had a great personality'.
'She was always smiling and liked to make people laugh.'
Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson of West Yorkshire Police said: 'Kulsuma suffered a brutal attack in broad daylight whilst her baby son was in his pram.
'Masum carried out the murder then calmly walked away as if nothing had happened.'
IOPC director Emily Barry said: 'This was a harrowing case which caused widespread understandable concern.
'It was appropriate we carried out a thorough investigation into the relevant contact between police and Ms Akter.'

EXCLUSIVE The chilling final call Beauty and the Geek star made to her sister before she allegedly murdered her boyfriend

The sister of former Beauty and the Geek star Tamika Chesser has shared details of the final phone call they shared before the 34-year-old was charged with murder. Chesser was arrested on June 19 after police responded to reports of a small fire at the Port Lincoln home she shared with 39-year-old Julian Daniel Story. But when emergency services arrived, they found Mr Story dismembered and missing his head on the bathroom floor of the apartment. Chesser was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. She is currently being held in James Nash House, a mental health facility. The reality star's sister, Kiya-May Chesser, told Daily Mail Australia on Saturday her family were reeling from reports their loved one had been charged. 'Please report how my sister is in a mental psychosis,' Kiya-May said. 'This is not her... She would never do these things.' Kiya-May added that Chesser had experienced a 'life of trauma and abuse, and now this - it has fried her brain'. 'She called me on the 10th of this month to save her animals because one pooed on the floor… he's a drug cook and not in a good mind space himself. 'In their short time together we would be on the phone to her while he was going off in the background. There is more to this story.' Kiya-May said 'a lot has happened' in Chesser's life since she appeared on Beauty and the Greek and 'in the past five years she's become very mentally ill'. 'This is a loss not only for Julian's family but ours too,' she said. In addition to the murder charge, Chesser was also charged with assaulting police and with knowingly performing an act or omission intending to result in human remains being less likely to be found for the purposes of concealing the commission of an offence relating to the human remains, court documents state. Detective Darren Fielke told a press conference it was 'crucial' Mr Story's head was returned to his family so they could hold a funeral. 'We have not recovered the head of Julian Story,' he told reporters. Police released CCTV images and video which showed Chesser walking three dogs and carrying a bag while apparently wearing a Hijab-style head covering. In an effort to find Mr Story's head, officers are appealing to the public for help in tracking Chesser's movements in the week of the alleged murder, particularly between midnight on Tuesday night (June 17) and the report of the fire at 3.30 pm on Thursday afternoon (June 19). 'We know that Tamika did not drive a vehicle and regularly walked around the township of Port Lincoln,' Det Fielke said. A spokesperson for Mr Story's family thanked police and first responders for their 'compassion and professionalism during this devastating time'. 'We are navigating an unimaginable loss, and your care has brought comfort amid the chaos,' the spokesperson said. 'We are also deeply grateful to our family and friends and this extraordinary community whose kindness and support have helped carry us through. Your prayers, presence, and quiet strength mean more than words can say.' A neighbour noticed black smoke coming from the property about 1.30pm on June 19 and asked Chesser, who appeared outside, what she was doing. 'Nothing,' she allegedly replied, before taking her dogs for a walk. The neighbour grew concerned about the fire and took a bucket of water over to the home, entering through the back door, the documents state. Police will allege Chesser murdered Mr Story around midnight on June 17. Chesser sported a shaved head as she appeared in court via a video link from James Nash House, a mental health facility, at a suppression order hearing on Friday. She first appeared in court last week, where she was refused bail. A committal hearing has been scheduled for December. Chesser was the runner-up on the 2010 season of Beauty and the Geek and later modelled for men's magazines including Playboy, Ralph and FHM.

DNA taken from Travis Decker search area fails to match suspected killer as teams scour Washington mountains

Not a single piece of DNA collected during the manhunt for Travis Decker has been a match to the suspected killer, Washington authorities have admitted. Decker, 33, is accused of suffocating his three daughters - Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia, five - at a remote campsite in the Cascades mountains in Washington state on May 30 before vanishing. Tactical teams have scoured the mountains near the city of Leavenworth for weeks, but the searches have found no evidence of Decker in the area, according to an update Friday from Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison. 'We do have some items that have come back from the scene, that have come back to match the DNA that we have for what we believe to be Travis's DNA,' he said, per KIRO7. 'But no other DNA that's come back to show anyone else was on scene. Nothing in the mountains.' It comes days after the Kittitas County Sherriff's Office (KCSO), which is also involved in the search alongside the FBI, raised the possibility that Decker may be dead. 'At this time, there is no certain evidence that Decker remains alive or in this area,' the sheriff's office announced earlier this week. Officials said that they have modified part of their search into a recovery effort, but warned the public that if Decker is alive, he remains extremely dangerous and may have access to firearms. In a statement from Kittitas County Sheriff Clay Myers this week, he said investigators have tracked dozens of tips and have received multiple reports of possible sightings of Decker. However, he said there remains no definitive evidence that the suspected family-slayer is alive. 'Deputies have maintained extra patrols in the areas in and around the Teanaway Valley, Blewett Pass, Liberty, and Lauderdale,' the statement read. 'Kittitas County Regional Tactical Response Team members have spent days and nights in remote terrain, working with K9 resources and experienced trackers to identify and follow any credible lead to Decker's location. '(Decker) could be deceased. He could have taken his own life. He could have succumbed to injuries. We recognize that's a possibility.' Sheriff Morrison added that despite the possibility that Decker is already dead, law enforcement will not stop their search until they either find a body or he is brought to justice. 'I respect Sheriff Myers, his agency, they certainly have taken on a huge lift over this last week,' he said. 'His people have come alongside us, so appreciative of their efforts and their resources they put into it. Either way, we haven't found him alive or dead, and the search still continues.' With an extensive combat background, authorities and locals are concerned about Decker still being on the loose. He joined the Army in 2013. He served in Afghanistan before transferring to the Washington National Guard in 2021, Karina Shagren, communications director for the Washington Military Department, confirmed to the Daily Mail. He was a full-time member of the Guard until 2023 or 2024, when he switched to part-time. Decker stopped attending mandatory monthly drills a little over a year ago, and the Guard was in the process of a disciplinary discharge. He likely has advanced combat training and was an airborne paratrooper who earned the elite rank of 'Ranger,' indicating he would have excellent wilderness and survival skills, Fox 13 Seattle reported, citing social media posts. Decker is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping, but has been missing since May 30, when he failed to return the three little girls back to their mother, Whitney, after a visit. Whitney, who is divorced from the veteran, told police that he had picked the girls up around 5pm but had not returned them by 8pm, and his phone went straight to voicemail, court documents said. Detectives said she 'expressed concern because Decker reportedly has never done this before and … is currently experiencing some mental health issues.' She also told law enforcement officials that Decker was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and believes he did not take medication for the condition, according to court documents. On June 2, a search party led to the chilling discovery of the sisters' dead bodies near the Chelan County campsite along with Decker's truck. Deputies found the girls' bodies about 75 to 100 yards from Decker's truck. An autopsy revealed the girls died from suffocation and police reported their wrists were zip-tied when they were found, court documents said. Police collected 'a large amount of evidence' from the truck, including male blood and non-human blood. The alleged-killer's dog was found nearby as well and taken to an animal humane society, Fox 8 reported. The discovery of the children's corpses kicked off the massive search for Decker. State and federal authorities believe they may have spotted him hiking in a mountainous area. On June 10, a helicopter crew s aw someone running off a trail near Colchuck Lake. Police speculate it was Decker. The lake is roughly 12 miles from the campground the girls were left near.
