Pranav Gurav stuns with 10.27s dash as Gurindervir crashes out in 100m final
Kochi: Pranav Pramod Gurav emerged as the surprise package on the opening day of the 28th
National Federation Senior Athletics Competition
at the Maharaja's College ground on Monday.
Representing the Railways, the 23-year-old from Maharashtra not only outperformed more established sprinters but also overcame sweltering weather conditions to become the fastest athlete of the four-day meet. His time of 10.27 seconds, a personal best, placed him ahead of Animesh Kujur (10.32s) and Manikanta Hoblidhar (10.35s).

National 100m record holder Gurindervir Singh delivered an underwhelming performance, finishing last in the final with a time of 11.21 seconds. It seemed that Gurindervir couldn't run properly as he felt cramps in his thighs at the start of the race.
The opening day proved particularly demanding for the sprinters, who were forced to run the heats, semifinals and final of the 100m on Monday itself as the organisers decided to complete the event in a day. 'I never ran three races in a single day in my career. This was hectic,' said Animesh.
In the women's 100m dash, Telengana's Nithya Gandhe secured a comfortable victory, clocking 11.50 seconds. Tamil Nadu's Abhinaya Rajarajan (11.54s) and Karnataka's Sneha SS (11.62s) secured second and third positions respectively.
Barwal claims meet record
Sawan Barwal from the Indian Army established a meet record in the men's 10,000m race, clocking 28.57.13s to secure the gold medal.
His performance surpassed the previous record of 28.57.90s, which was set by Surendra Singh in 2007. The Indian contingent for the
Asian Athletics Championships
, scheduled to be held in South Korea next month, will be picked following this meet, and on Day 1, five athletes achieved the qualification benchmark of the Asian meet.
These athletes included Barwal and Abhishek Pal in men's 10,000m, Lili Das and Pooja in the women's 1500m and Yoonus Shah in men's 1500m. However, the day's spotlight was firmly on Gurav as he came up with a result beyond his own expectations. He dedicated his win to his ailing grandfather, who is currently hospitalised.

R Ashwin on Anderson-Tendulkar trophy: This series was slightly better than even the 2005 Ashes
The series Anderson-Tendulkar trophy came to a thrilling close on Monday after Gus Atkinson's stumps were cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj. It was one of the exhilarating five-match Test series in recent times. Many former players and Pundits compared it with the 2005 Ashes, which is touted as one of the greatest Test series in the modern era. However, former Indian cricketer R Ashwin said this one is better than the 20025 England-Australia showdown. 'A lot of people are comparing this series with the 2005 Ashes, but I think this series was slightly better than even the 2005 Ashes – because there was so much more imperfection, from both sides,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat. 'If you look at that Australian team, there was Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, you had Michael Kasprowicz, Shaun Tait. From this side [England] you had Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, you had Ashley Giles. There was a lot of experience in the bowling attacks. There was experience in the batting too. There was a lot of hard-fought cricket, where you couldn't see a lot of mistakes. It was hard-fought.' While Ashwin did acknowledge this as a good series, he also mentioned it was an imperfect series. 'In this series, there were a lot of mistakes,' Ashwin added. 'But the young players have corrected their mistakes and gotten better through the series. You had somebody like KL Rahul who's not put a foot wrong in the series. Then you had somebody like a Rishabh Pant or Shubman Gill, who made errors – both got run out once – they played some poor shots and got out at the crucial moments. 'In the bowling too, Mohammed Siraj has had some down spells, Prasidh [Krishna] has had some ordinary spells. England have bowled poorly, but have fought back through Ben Stokes. So there has been a lot of imperfection. There was a lot of perfection in the 2005 Ashes, but we got to see a lot of imperfection in this series,' Ashwin added. 'And that's the beauty of it. Players corrected their vulnerabilities, and made this series like a festival for us. [For] anyone who paid money to go watch the match, no one would say they didn't have their money's worth. Twenty-five days of riveting cricket, and I could give anything to watch this series, I have not missed a moment.'

He led the attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and delivered in pressure situations. His spell in the final Test was match-winning. Siraj picked up 23 wickets, including two 5-wicket hauls. Jasprit Bumrah - 9/10 Jasprit Bumrah missed two Tests but made a big impact whenever he played. His pace and accuracy were top-class. He picked up 14 wickets in three matches, including two fifers. Prasidh Krishna - 6/10 Prasidh Krishna took wickets but was a bit expensive in this series. Still, he provided crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs and also played a part on the last day of the final Test, which India won to level the series. Krishna picked up 14 wickets at an economy 4.94. Akash Deep - 6/10 Akash Deep had one great Test match and looked sharp with the ball. He helped India win the second Test at Edgbaston. He also scored a crucial half-century in the final Test, coming in as a nightwatchman. Akash Deep picked up 13 wickets with a best of 6/99.
