Tesla Enters India with Mumbai Launch, Imports Model Y
In an invitation to media late Thursday, the carmaker said the July 15 event was the 'launch of Tesla in India through the opening of the Tesla experience centre at Bandra Kurla Complex,' located in the city's leading commercial business district.
Grappling with excess manufacturing capacity at its other factories and falling sales, Tesla has pivoted to selling imported cars in India on which it will need to pay about 70% import duty and other levies.
Commercially available custom records from January to June showed Tesla imported vehicles, chargers and accessories into India worth close to $1 million, mainly from China and the United States.
The vehicles included six of Tesla's best-selling Model Y at a shipment value of $32,500 each for five cars, and $46,000 for the long-range version, as well as several Superchargers.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has for years wooed Tesla, including forming a new policy to attract the carmaker to build its EVs locally.
Last year, Musk had planned to visit India where he was expected to announce an investment of $2 billion-$3 billion, including in local EV manufacturing. But he cancelled the trip at the last moment.
Tesla has conveyed it is not interested in manufacturing in India at the moment.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that if Tesla were to build a factory in India to circumvent that country's tariffs, it would be 'unfair' to the U.S.'
Tesla has hired for several of the three dozen positions it advertised in India earlier this year, bringing on board store managers, sales and service executives. It is looking for supply chain engineers and vehicle operators for its autopilot ambitions. - REUTERS

Hungary government to draw up plans to protect jobs after US-EU trade deal
FILE PHOTO: A general view of the Hungarian parliament in Budapest, Hungary, May 20, 2025. REUTERS/Marton Monus/File Photo BUDAPEST (Reuters) -Hungary's government will draw up plans to protect the country's jobs and manufacturing after the trade deal between the United States and the European Union, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told public radio on Friday. The U.S. and the EU announced a trade agreement on Sunday setting a 15% tariff on the bloc's exports to the United States. The levy includes cars, a mainstay of central European exports, which previously incurred a tariff of 2.5%. Orban said Hungary's total exports to the United States were worth some $11 billion a year. "We have to draw up two action plans, one is an action plan to protect jobs, to make sure that foreign companies working in Hungary do not react by laying off people. Or, if they do, we need to offer those people jobs immediately," Orban said. The second plan was needed to make sure no manufacturing plants were shut down as a result of the tariffs, said Orban, who has struggled to revive Hungary's economy from the EU's worst inflationary surge following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Orban, who faces what political analysts say will be a closely-fought election next year, sharply criticised European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday for what he said was a poorly negotiated deal. Hungary's government has not published an estimate about the tariffs' impact on growth, although the economy ministry slashed its 2025 economic growth forecast to 1% on Tuesday from the 2.5% it expected at the start of the year. Concordia, Romania's largest employers' association, has estimated the tariffs could shave up to 0.2% off the country's growth while the Czech finance ministry said tariffs would slow expansion there by 0.2 percentage points for the remainder of the year. For neighbouring Slovakia, whose share of goods' exports as a percentage of national output is the highest in the EU, Societe Generale economists have estimated the tariff impact at 0.87% of gross domestic product. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland, the EU's largest economy outside the euro zone, could lose around 8 billion zlotys ($2.14 billion) due to the new U.S. import tariffs. Hong Kong GDP expands 3.1%, faster than forecast
HONG KONG: Hong Kong's economy grew by a faster than expected 3.1% year-on-year in the second quarter, official advance estimates showed on Thursday, expanding for a 10th straight quarter on the back of strong exports and improved domestic demand. That compares with an average forecast of 2.7% from 13 economists polled by Reuters and with growth of 3.0% in the first quarter of 2025. GDP had expanded 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2024. "Looking ahead, steady economic growth in Asia, particularly in the (Chinese) mainland, combined with the government's various measures to bolster consumption sentiment, attract investment, diversify markets, and promote economic growth, will continue to provide steadfast support for various segments of the Hong Kong economy," a government spokesman said. Overall investment expenditure increased alongside the economic expansion, while private consumption expenditure resumed growth, supported by stabilisation of consumption in the domestic market, the government said. Total exports of goods saw accelerated growth, with the temporary easing of U.S. tariff measures leading to some "rush shipments", while exports of services, growth in inbound tourism, and expansion in cross-boundary traffic also boosted growth. However, the spokesman also warned that renewed U.S. tariff hikes would exert pressure on economic activity, adding that an uncertain pace of U.S. interest rate cuts will affect investment sentiment and the "rush shipment" effect is also expected to fade later this year. On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy expanded 0.4% in April-June, the data showed. That compared with a revised 1.8% in January-March and 0.9% in October-December 2024. Private consumption expenditure increased by 1.9% in the latest quarter, compared with a decline of 1.2% in the first quarter, and a fall of 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2024. Goods exports rose 11.5%, compared with an 8.4% jump in the first quarter, and a 1.3% increase in the fourth quarter 2024. Imports of goods increased 12.7%, as compared with a 7.2% surge in the first quarter and 0.4% growth in the fourth quarter 2024. - Reuters
