One of the top 50 best beaches in the world is just two hours from London

Time Out2 days ago
London may boast a marvellous selection of outdoor pools and lidos, but what we don't have much of is beaches. Sure, there might be that artificial beach in Ruislip and, yes, the Thames does indeed have some low-tide rocky patches, but neither of those are a great substitute for a proper, swimmable beach by the sea. Besides, we wouldn't wish swimming in the Thames on anyone – well, not yet, anyway.
Fortunately there are plenty of beaches within easy reach of London – find a guide to the best ones here – and some of them are very good indeed. In fact, one beach near(ish) the capital was just named in the top 50 beaches in the world.
The list in question came from travel blog and tour booking company Big 7 Travel, and just four British beaches made the top 50. The one within reasonably easy access of London can be found on the south coast, in Dorset – Alum Chine beach.
Alum Chine is the largest chine of Bournemouth, and you can find the beach where the gorge meets the sea. Big 7 Travel named Alum Chine beach the 39th best in the world, sandwiched in the list between sandy stretches in Spain and Australia, and picked out its Blue Flag certification and watersports options as highlights. Big 7 also pointed out that Alum Chine often has warmer water and weather than many UK beaches.
So, how do Londoners get to Alum Chine? Well, the trip is two hours by car on a very, very good run. It's more like two and a half hours by public transport – you can get a direct train from Waterloo or Clapham Junction to Bournemouth, then it's either a walk (45 mins) or a bus and walk (30 mins) to the beach.
You might be thinking: that's a heck of a long way to go for a beach. But while you're in Bournemouth there's another award-winning beach not far away. Bournemouth Beach, which was named one of the best in the world by TripAdvisor earlier this year, sits two miles east of Alum Chine.

Brits travelling to Spain, France and Greece warned of new 20 euro entry fee

The new fee will have to be paid for every eligible traveller in your group. British travellers and other non-EU travellers are being reminded of a new rule which will see them have to pay to enter 30 European countries as part of a new travel scheme. Following Brexit, UK passport holders will legally have to register with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to gain access to certain European nations. ‌ The travel permit is being introduced to strengthen security and the borders of the Schengen zone. ‌ An ETIAS was reportedly originally planned to cost 7 euros per person, however, EU bosses, it's now been announced it will cost almost three times that at 20 euros per eligible traveller. Tourists over 70 and those aged under 18 are exempt, so for a family of four travelling with two children, the cost would be 40 euros. ‌ When travellers have purchases a ETIAS, they will be able to gain access to European countries as frequently as they would like for short-term stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The scheme has been delayed several times already. Speaking earlier this year, EU's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs estimated that the ETIAS will be introduced in the final quarter of 2026, reports the Liverpool Echo. ‌ There will then be a grace period, so applying for an ETIAS will not become mandatory until 2027. The ETIAS is stored electronically against the passport and will be necessary for travel to the following countries: Austria Belgium Bulgaria Croatia Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Iceland Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Malta Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Romania Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland ‌ It will also be needed for Cyprus travel when Cyprus joins the Schengen area. Most applications are expected to be approved "almost immediately", but if the system identifies an error in your ETIAS request, it could be rejected. Reasons for ETIAS applications being declined could are said to include an invalid passport, being considered a "risk" or having a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert, submitting an incomplete application, or failing to attend a required interview. ‌ A travel expert recently warned those travelling from the UK to EU countries - including France, Spain, Greece and Portugal that they may face longer queues and potential travel delays this year due to new regulations. The travel insider, Ivaylo Danailov, CEO of SkyRefund, believes that while the system could eventually streamline travel, significant delays are likely as the new system 'beds in' this year. The European Union has officially announced the launch of its Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital border control platform set to replace manual passport stamping for non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area - countries such as Spain and Greece. Foreign Office issues guidance to UK tourists heading abroad

The Foreign Office has issued a message to anyone planning to jet away this summer, and has advised all Brits to do one simple thing before they pack their bags Brits planning a summer getaway have been given guidance from the Foreign Office. It's all too easy to dive into your holiday without considering potential issues. ‌ For instance, severe weather conditions on your flight day could result in cancellation. Alternatively, an unexpected incident near your accommodation might mean you can't stay there for your entire trip. Some nations also enforce stricter dress codes for travellers, even tourists. ‌ Luckily, there's a straightforward way for Brits to ensure they're fully prepared for their holiday in advance. Writing on X, the FCDO said: "Heading overseas? Before you pack your passport, check the latest Travel Advice for your destination. ‌ "You'll find all the key info from entry requirements to laws and cultural differences". ‌ Checking foreign travel advice The Foreign Office website provides up-to-date advice for British travellers for 226 countries and territories, including popular British holiday destinations like Spain, Italy, Egypt, Greece, and France. To utilise the website, simply locate the hyperlink for your destination country or type it into the search bar. The website will then provide you with any updated warnings and whether they remain current. For instance, the Foreign Office for Greece issued an update on 4 July about wildfires spreading through parts of the country. Despite the entry being updated at the start of the month, it underscores that the advice remains relevant due to the high risk of wildfires in the region throughout the entire summer season, spreading from April to October. The Foreign Office can also assist you in preparing for any emergencies by providing information on who to contact. ‌ For example, if you require emergency services in Spain, it is advised to dial 112 for police, fire services, or an ambulance. It also advises that if you need to report a crime, you can do so at the nearest station of the National Police, regional police, or Civil Guard. Important advice for those with travel insurance It is particularly crucial to stay updated on Foreign Office guidance if you have taken out travel insurance for the duration of your holiday. If the Foreign Office has warned against travelling to a certain region, you could be at risk of invalidating your travel insurance. ‌ If your insurance does become invalid, you could be responsible for footing the bill for any medical emergencies yourself. This could lead to excessively high costs depending on where you're travelling. For example, a fall resulting in a fractured leg in Spain could result in a bill of £2,500. Or in Greece, a quad bike crash requiring surgical intervention could result in costs ofover £80,000. Meanwhile, contracting a stomach illness or infection in the USA that demands hospital care could result in charges exceeding £150,000. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) warns: "When shopping around for travel insurance, make sure that the policy is right for your needs, and do not automatically opt for the cheapest. This is especially important if you have any pre-existing medical conditions." They also suggest taking out travel insurance the moment you book your trip to safeguard against potential losses like cancellation charges if sickness stops you from travelling. At the very latest, they urge getting it sorted before departing the UK, as many policies offer protection from the moment your journey begins until you get back home.
