Mizoram statehood story: History, lesser-known facts, integration with India

India Today2 days ago
Mizoram, one of India's most beautiful and culturally rich states, has had a remarkable journey from being a conflict zone to a peaceful and progressive region. Tucked away in the far northeast of the country, Mizoram became the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987 following a historic peace agreement.Mizoram was originally a district of Assam. The region, inhabited mostly by the Mizo tribes, was granted district council status in 1952 under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. However, demands for a separate state began to rise due to a growing sense of political and cultural isolation amongst the Mizo people.advertisementFROM UPRISING TO PEACE ACCORDThe situation escalated in 1966 when the Mizo National Front (MNF), under the leadership of Laldenga, declared independence from India and launched an armed insurgency. This unrest lasted two decades.
In a major development, the Mizoram Peace Accord was signed on June 30, 1986 between the MNF and the Indian government, led by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Accord promised full statehood, and peace returned to the hills. On February 20, 1987, Mizoram officially became a state with Aizawl as its capital, and Laldenga became the first Chief Minister.Since its statehood, Mizoram has been recognised for its high literacy rate, low crime rate, and communal harmony. The state is often cited as a model of successful peace-building through negotiation.LESSER-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT MIZORAMMizoram is known as the 'Songbird of India' due to its strong musical traditions.advertisementIt shares international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, and over 90% of its area is hilly. The Mizo people have a unique tradition of Tlawmngaihna, a code of selfless service and hospitality. It is one of the few Indian states where Christianity is the dominant religion.Mizoram has one of the highest forest covers in India, making it an ecological hotspot. The Chapchar Kut festival is a colourful and energetic celebration of spring. In Aizawl, honking is considered impolite. Locals follow traffic discipline with unusual calm -- no chaos, no unnecessary noise. Most Mizo names do not indicate gender. You can't tell whether someone is male or female just from their name.Mizoram has one of the highest newspaper readerships per capita in India. Even remote villages have access to local dailies published in the Mizo language.Mizoram witnesses a natural phenomenon called 'Mautam', when bamboo flowers once every 48-50 years, followed by a rat population explosion. It's tied to folklore and also agricultural planning.Mizoram's journey from insurgency to integration stands as a reminder that dialogue, mutual respect, and trust can resolve even the deepest divisions. As the state continues to progress, it remains an example of how diversity and unity can go hand in hand.- Ends

Several Pakistani Accounts Blocked During Op Sindoor Reinstated After Govt Review: Sources

Last Updated: Restrictions were imposed earlier this year during India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror campaign. Some Pakistani news websites and social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities which were banned during India's counter-terror operation Operation Sindoor have resurfaced on social media. It is unclear if those restrictions have been lifted or not as there is no official announcement lifting the ban by the government. However, government sources speaking to News18 said that 'following a periodic review, some social media accounts have been reinstated" but majority of the handles remain blocked. The government sources pointed out that some '14,000 accounts on some social still remain banned". They further added: 'Upon the review, it has been observed that some of these platforms which have been reinstated have not spoken anti India language for a while, which was the main reason for blocking them". The sources said: 'Accounts cannot be permanently banned and are subject to regular reviews as part of the standard process". The ban, part of India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror effort, targeted major Pakistani media outlets including Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Bol News, Samaa TV, GNN, Suno News HD and The Pakistan Reference, among others. Together, these channels accounted for an estimated 63 million subscribers. The crackdown also extended to sports and entertainment channels such as Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket and Hum TV, as well as individual journalists and content creators. Pakistan public and sports-related personalities whose accounts faced ban included Umar Cheema, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Irshad Bhatti, Razi Naama, Wasay Habib, Arzoo Kazmi, Syed Muzammil Shah and former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Several of them also faced restrictions on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), as the ban widened in early May 2025. The restrictions were imposed amid cross-border information warfare and attempts by these Pakistani social media cells to manipulate Indian public sentiment. A notable example of Pakistani cricketers and celebs spreading misinformation was that of Shahid Afridi, who criticised the people of India and the Indian Army. In early May 2025, Shahid Afridi's YouTube channel was one of the Pakistani platforms blocked in India.
