MNF slams ZPM govt over transportation crisis in Mizoram

1 2 3 4 5 6 Aizawl: Mizo National Front (MNF) on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) govt, accusing it of mismanaging Mizoram's transportation infrastructure, leading to a severe crisis. MNF claims the state's roads, particularly national highways 306 and 06, are in their worst condition this year, causing significant disruptions. J Sawma Vanchhawng, vice-chairman of MNF publicity board, criticised the govt for failing to maintain and repair roads during the dry season, despite previous assurances. He highlighted the Kawnpui-Khamrang-Buichali stretch of the Aizawl-Silchar highway as a particularly problematic area. "Everyone in Mizoram knows unless the highways and roads are maintained and repaired during dry season, the roads will be dilapidated. We faced severe problems last year, especially at Kawnpui-Khamrang-Buichali stretch of the Aizawl-Silchar highway. State PWD minister Vanlalhlana said in Sept last year that there was fund and the repair will begin after the monsoon was over. However, nothing happened," Vanchhawng said. He alleged that funds allocated for road maintenance, including Rs 35.37 lakh forfeited by a contractor and over Rs. 25.54 crore collected from fuel cess, have not been utilised. He accused the ZPM govt of inaction, leading to shortages of essential commodities and economic downturns. He also dismissed the govt's attempts to blame the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for the poor road conditions, noting that the problematic stretch was only handed over to NHIDCL in July. In response to the crisis, a high-level committee meeting, led by commissioner & secretary H Lalengmawia, was held to address the ongoing fuel shortage caused by road damage on NH-306. The disruption began on July 19, when tanker truck drivers suspended operations, leading to a severe fuel shortage. An official statement reported progress in road repairs, though conditions remain concerning. Meanwhile, a meeting chaired by FCS&CA minister B Lalchhanzova in Kolasib town focused on providing food to stranded truckers along the Aizawl-Silchar highway.

MNF alleges infra funds misuse in Mizoram

Aizawl: Mizo National Front (MNF) on Friday raised serious concerns over the utilisation of funds sanctioned for key infrastructure projects in Mizoram, questioning whether the money was misused or misappropriated by the Mizoram govt. The alleged fund embezzlement was brought to light during a meeting of the DONER Consultative Committee held on Thursday afternoon at the Parliament Annex Committee Room. The meeting was attended by several MPs from the northeastern states and key officials, MNF said in a statement. According to the statement, during the meeting, Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member, K Vanlalvena, representing MNF, pointed out that funds allocated under the ministry of DONER for the repair of the Keitum-N Mualcheng-Zawlsei road in central Mizoram's Serchhip district, under the 2023-2024 budget, were yet to be utilised. Despite approval for the repair works, the projects did not commence, and Vanlalvena suggested that the allocated money might have been diverted to other purposes by the present state govt. The meeting decided that the matter should be addressed in the next meeting for further investigation. The MP told TOI that around Rs 200 crore was sanctioned by the ministry of DoNER for the repair of the road. In addition, the director of fisheries and animal husbandry from Mizoram raised concerns about the SNA SPARSH Scheme, for which the central govt sanctioned Rs 1,000 lakh in April 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Central officials pointed out that the Mizoram govt had not utilised the funds, and this non-utilisation might affect further sanctions amounting to Rs 700 lakh. MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo's body brought to Aizawl from Delhi, last rites on Wednesday

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, leaders of the Luangmual unit of Young Mizo Association (YMA) said. The body of the two-time legislator from Dampa arrived at the Lengpui airport around 1.30 pm, and will reach his home at Luangmual neighbourhood in the western part of Aizawl in the evening, they said. Aizawl, July 22 (PTI) The mortal remains of Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo, who died at a hospital in Delhi, were brought to Aizawl on Tuesday afternoon. Sailo, whose performance as opposition member in the assembly was praised by many, died at Max Superspeciality Hospital in Delhi around 9 pm on Monday after battling with complicated ailments, including scrub typhus and pneumonia, for nearly a month. The 65-year-old MNF leader was flown to Delhi on June 29 following a fever. Although he initially showed signs of improvement, his condition deteriorated a few days ago and became worse on Sunday, following which he was put on ventilator support, family sources said. Born in 1960, Sailo joined MNF and went underground when he was only 16. He actively took part in the secessionist movement, spearheaded by the MNF led by late Laldenga, for 20 years till the underground group signed the historic Mizo peace accord with the Centre in June 1986. He contested the assembly polls in 2018 and got elected from Dampa in Mamit district, defeating his nearest opponent, Congress nominee Lalrobiaka, by a margin of 1,657 votes. He was re-elected from the same constituency in the last assembly polls, held in November 2023. Sailo held many important posts in the MNF and was a member of the national core committee of the party till his last breath. The MNF described Sailo's death as 'the collapse of one of the big pillars of the party'. Governor VK Singh, Chief Minister Lalduhoma and state Congress president Lal Thanzara mourned his death. 'I am deeply saddened by the passing of Pu Lalrintluanga Sailo. His dedicated contributions and tireless service to the state of Mizoram and its people will be fondly remembered,' the governor said in a social media post. Lalduhoma said he was deeply shocked by the sudden demise of Sailo, whom he hailed as a diligent person, orator and good debater. The CM said he had instructed officers and staff of the Mizoram House in Delhi to do whatever is required to assist Sailo's family. PTI CORR SOM This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Zoramthanga celebrates 81st b'day, guv VK Singh wishes good health

Aizawl: Former Mizoram CM and president of Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoramthanga , on Sunday celebrated his 81st birthday. The veteran politician received warm wishes from governor Gen VK Singh , who took to Instagram to offer his congratulations. "Congratulations and warmest wishes to Pu Zoramthanga on your special day. May you be blessed with excellent health, profound happiness, and many more years of continued wisdom and strength," Singh wrote. Zoramthanga was born on July 13, 1944, in the small village of Samthang in Champhai district, bordering Myanmar. His political journey began in 1966, when he joined the erstwhile underground MNF. He became a close confidante of MNF supremo Laldenga, rising to the position of second-in-command. Following the historic Mizo Accord signed on June 30, 1986, Zoramthanga led a contingent of MNF insurgents from their headquarters in the then Arakan state of Burma (now Myanmar) to Mizoram to lay down their arms. Zoramthanga was inducted as a minister during the six-month interim govt, where MNF shared power with Congress. Mizoram was elevated to a full-fledged state on Feb 20, 1987, and he continued as a minister, holding portfolios including finance and education. After a decade in political wilderness, MNF allied with the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), won the 1998 assembly elections, leading to Zoramthanga's first term as chief minister.

New Delhi, The North Central Railway zone has set up a five-member junior level committee to probe the derailment of a divisional material train at Manda Road station near Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on July 5. North Central Railway sets up committee to probe derailment of material train near UP's Prayagraj The probe body will also look into the reasons and suggest action against staff, who didn't report the derailment to the divisional level officers. A divisional material train, which is used to replace old railway tracks with the new ones, derailed at the side lines at Manda Road station near Prayagraj at 9:10 pm on July 5 and the staff involved in this case tried not to report the matter to the divisional office. Seven railway staff on duty at the time of the incident have so far been suspended. 'Jr Scale officer level committee consisting of following officers has been nominated with approval of competent authority to investigate the cause of derailment of train no DN DMT/PQRS goods at MNF hot axle siding on 05.07.2025 at 21.10 hrs and suggest recommendations," said an official circular issued on Wednesday mentioning the designation of five officials. 'The case was not reported to the division. Same also to be investigated,' it added. The five-member probe team consists of Assistant Divisional Engineer from Mirzapur, Assistant Divisional Mechanical Engineer , Assistant Divisional Electrical Engineer , Assistant Operations Manager and Assistant Divisional Signal and Telecom Engineer from Prayagraj. 'The senior most member of the committee will be the president of the committee,' said the circular, adding that the committee should complete the probe within the stipulated period of seven days and submit a report. 'DMT/PQRS is a track laying machine with about half a dozen wagons attached to it. It removes the old track, keeps it in one of the wagons and then takes a new track from another wagon and puts it in place of the old one,' said a railway official. 'Though the derailment didn't cause any human injury or detention of the train since it happened on the side line, it did cause delay in track laying work and financial loss to the railways,' he added.
