Teenage boy and girl jailed in UK for the ‘sadistic' torture and killing of kittens

A UK judge on Monday sentenced two 17-year-old teenagers – a boy and a girl – respectively to one year and nine months in detention for the 'sadistic' torture and killing of two kittens. The boy had also wanted to kill a human and researched how to 'get away with murder', according to the prosecutor at London's Highbury Corner Youth Court. Two kittens were found cut open with ropes attached to them in a park in northwest London in May. Both kittens had pieces of flesh and fur apparently burned off them. Police also found knives, blowtorches and scissors at the scene. The two teenagers pleaded guilty to possessing a knife and causing unnecessary suffering to the animals. Neither can be named for legal reasons. I really wanted to murder someone. Every day I was researching how to get away with murder British teenager jailed for torturing and killing kittens District judge Hina Rai said the killings were 'without doubt the most awful offences against animals I have seen in this court'.

EU condemns arrest of former Macau pro-democracy lawmaker

The European Union on Saturday condemned Macau's arrest of former pro-democracy lawmaker Au Kam-san, saying it only heightened concerns about the 'erosion of political pluralism' in the Chinese territory. This photo taken on December 12, 2024 shows Au Kam-san, a primary school teacher who became one of Macau's longest-serving pro-democracy legislators, posing for a portrait in Macau. Photo: Eduardo Leal/AFP. Au is the first person to be arrested under the city's national security law. Authorities alleged on Thursday that the 68-year-old primary school teacher had ties to foreign groups endangering China. 'This development adds to the existing concerns about the ongoing erosion of political pluralism and freedom of speech in the Macao Special Administrative Region,' said European Union spokesperson Anitta Hipper in a statement. 'The EU recalls that the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is a central element of the Macao Basic Law and 'one country, two systems',' set up in the former Portuguese colony. The territory near Hong Kong and known for its casinos, has retained its own legal system since China took it back from Portugal in 1999. The security law, which restricts political activity, was passed in 2009 but broadened in 2023. Au, a legislator up to 2021, has campaigned on social welfare, corruption and electoral reform. Former special counsel under investigation

Former special counsel under investigation Jack Smith resigned as special counsel in January, weeks before Donald Trump took office. File photo: AFP US officials have opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who led two federal criminal cases against President Donald Trump, US media reported on Saturday. The Office of Special Counsel told The New York Times it was investigating Smith for potentially violating the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal workers from engaging in political activity while on the job. Republican Senator Tom Cotton had reportedly asked the agency to investigate whether Smith's actions had been designed to influence the 2024 election. Smith was appointed special counsel in 2022, and charged Trump with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House. Trump denied both charges and sought to frame them as politically motivated, accusing the Justice Department of being weaponised against him. Neither case ever came to trial, and the special counsel – in line with a Justice Department policy of not prosecuting a sitting president – dropped them both after Trump won the November 2024 presidential election. Smith then resigned before Trump could fulfil his campaign pledge to fire him. The most severe penalty under the Hatch Act is termination of employment, which would not apply to Smith as he has already resigned. (AFP)
