
#TECH: Tourism Malaysia, Honor partner to promote Visit Malaysia 2026 through mobile photography
Tourism Malaysia has partnered with global technology brand Honor to promote the country's cultural and natural beauty ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. The collaboration will feature mobile photography competitions, workshops, exhibitions and cultural events.
The highlight of the campaign is the Honor Magic Moments Awards, an international photography contest now open to Malaysians, giving them the chance to capture and share Malaysia's diverse charms through their smartphones.
Honor South Pacific president, Justin Li, said the collaboration reflected the brand's commitment to enriching lives through innovation and supporting Malaysia's national tourism goals.
"At the beginning of 2025, Tourism Malaysia launched a clear and inspiring direction for Visit Malaysia 2026, aiming to attract 35.6 million tourists and generate RM147.1 billion in receipts. This ambitious vision will showcase the best of Malaysia to the world, celebrating the country's rich cultural diversity, dynamic growth, and the warmth of its people," he said.
Li added that the partnership was part of Honor's broader vision, which included youth empowerment, digital skills development and smarter everyday experiences.
"Under 'Honor My Future', we will continue to foster youth empowerment, digital skills development and innovation, enabling the next generation to thrive in the intelligent era. Under 'Honor My Life', we aim to enrich daily life with smarter experiences, helping people capture their moments, stay connected and explore the world with creativity and ease," he said.
He also highlighted the importance of this collaboration in deepening diplomatic and economic ties.
"This partnership contributes to the high-quality development of Malaysia's tourism industry while further strengthening cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia," he said, while thanking the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia for its continued support.
Li said technology would play a central role in shaping travel experiences moving forward.
"We believe that technology is an essential driver of smart tourism," he said.
Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general Lee Thai Hung said the collaboration was an example of how innovation could be harnessed to elevate Malaysia's visibility globally.
"This moment not only marks a new chapter in our strategic cooperation, but also the significance of our unwavering commitment to integrate technology into the future of tourism promotions," he said.
He added that the use of mobile photography would help uncover new sights beyond the typical tourism hotspots.
"We hope Honor can help us get users to explore lots of other hidden gems of Malaysia," he said, citing destinations beyond Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak, including newly recognised sites such as the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, which was recently listed as the country's sixth Unesco site.
Lee also highlighted the power of mobile users in today's digital age.
"Everyone owns a videographer now," he said, noting that travellers can now become ambassadors of Malaysian tourism simply by sharing their journeys through smartphones.
The partnership will also see Honor producing travel content using its latest foldable smartphone, the Honor Magic V5. The device includes AI-powered features such as real-time screen sharing, a split screen for price comparison and AI Translate for smoother communication between tourists and locals.
Its camera system includes a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with 100x zoom, designed to help users capture vivid travel moments with ease. At just 8.8mm when folded, the Magic V5 is currently the slimmest foldable smartphone in the world.

NST Leader: Consumer Credit Bill brings order to Malaysia's spending madness
MANY Malaysians are financially challenged, but it has not stopped them from splurging on flashy cars and apparel, the latest gadgets and even coveted concert tickets. Add to these essentials such as food and beverage, rental, Internet data and leisurely pursuits, consumer spending in Malaysia hit a RM258.6 billion in the first quarter. Here's the paradox: such heavy spending is why small businesses survived during Covid-19 and through the post-pandemic years. But this same "gung-ho" spending is also why prices have inflated, thus the desperate call for government anti-inflationary measures and financial assistance. This has compelled the government to put together an interim package of financial goodies, effective Aug 31 to Dec 31. Top of the package is the one-off RM100 for all Malaysians above 18 under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah initiative. There's also a six sen reduction in the price of RON95 under fuel subsidy reforms, deferred toll hikes, and expansion of the Madani Rahmah Sales programme allocation to RM600 million. Lest critics deem it a strain on government debt, it's worth noting that the initiative is not new. It was implemented years ago in the name of "economic stimulation". Still, many Malaysians are indifferent to sensible financial management, spending needlessly, such as the obsession of changing cars year after year. A new safeguard is on the horizon: the just-passed Consumer Credit Bill 2025 (CCB), designed to protect against risks from uncontrolled credit and unethical lending practices. In the dizzying digital economy that elevates consumerism and fuels unrestrained spending, a new law had to be formulated to regulate credit-related businesses and services, compelling fair conduct. Credit providers will soon be mandated to ensure transparency in charges and adopt professional guidelines for debt collection and dispute resolution. A key provision of the bill is the regulation of instant loans and the increasingly popular "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) schemes. BNPL has gained such traction that even cash-strapped Malaysians have been able to snap up My Chemical Romance concert tickets. It means that people who couldn't afford the tickets bought them anyway. The downside? More debt. The CCB is hoped to be the "silver bullet" in curbing extreme consumerism — particularly among non-bank credit providers, including BNPL operators, leasing firms and factoring companies. It also extends to debt collection agencies, many of which have been running with little to no official oversight. The CCB will require full disclosure of credit terms, fees and hidden charges, while prohibiting misleading advertisements, undue pressure and deceptive credit tactics. It will also ban harassment, threats and public shaming of borrowers. Malaysians will soon be nudged to cut trivial spending and adopt more sensible personal financial management. The CCB will see to it.

Nestle Malaysia's Q2 earnings boosted by strong sales momentum
PETALING JAYA: Nestle Malaysia delivered positive sales growth for the first half of 2025, driven by solid acceleration in its second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (Q2'25). In Q2'25, the company recorded a turnover of RM1.67 billion, an increase from RM1.52 billion in Q2'24. For the quarter, Nestle Malaysia delivered a higher profit before tax of RM148.6 million and profit after tax of RM112.1 million, both marking double-digit growth against the Q2'24 baseline. The strong sales momentum in the second quarter was broad-based across brands and reflects further sales progress following successful Chinese New Year and Ramadan/Hari Raya campaigns in the first quarter. Nestle Malaysia announced a first interim dividend of 70 sen per share, the same amount as in the prior year. Alongside domestic sales, the company's export business accelerated, confirming Nestle Malaysia's international competitiveness, while continuing to leverage its role as the largest halal manufacturing hub for the Nestle Group worldwide. In a statement yesterday, the company said this performance underscores its ability to manage margins amid sustained volatility in commodity prices through the systematic application of the Nestle Virtuous Circle framework. CEO Juan Aranols said, 'The second quarter results validate our earlier guidance of returning to healthy growth by H1 2025. Amid market volatility and intense competition, we continued to drive strong brand plans with effective execution across all sales channels. We remain committed to continue honouring the trust Malaysians place in our brands and products, always Halal-certified and proudly made in Malaysia, by Malaysians and for Malaysians.' Throughout the quarter, Nestle Malaysia maintained its focus on the strong drivers of preference for its brands and product offerings in an evolving marketplace, namely those associated with quality, taste and nutritional relevance. In combination with its wide distribution network and best-in-class commercial execution, the company's core products performed well, complemented by product innovations that have been positively received by consumers, helping to sustain market leadership positions. In Q2'25, Nestle Malaysia continued to advance its environmental, social and governance efforts through impactful collaborations and sustainability initiatives. People-centric initiatives boost MSME sector in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Recent government measures aimed at easing financial burdens on Malaysians are expected to provide significant relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcements include continued fuel subsidies for RON95 at RM1.99 per litre and a postponement of toll rate increases on 10 major highways. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick highlighted the direct benefits for MSMEs, particularly those reliant on transportation and logistics. 'Many businesses, especially in rural areas, depend on travel between urban and rural locations for sourcing materials and product deliveries. These measures will help reduce operational costs,' he said during an interview on Bernama Radio's Reaksi segment. Additional support comes in the form of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, which provides a one-off RM100 cash aid to Malaysians aged 18 and above. The government has also increased funding for the MADANI Rahmah Sales initiative, aimed at stimulating domestic spending. Ewon encouraged Malaysians to take advantage of the newly announced public holiday on September 15, coinciding with Malaysia Day, by exploring local tourism. 'Support rural tourism and cooperative-run destinations. There is immense potential in our local economy waiting to be tapped,' he said.
