A man inside Chicago's Bean? Viral hoax floods politician with calls.

"I appreciate lighthearted parody as much as the next guy," Chicago Alderman Brendan Riley said in a statement. "However, this online hoax has led to a heavy uptick in calls to my office." Have you heard about the man inside The Bean? A small group of protestors have gone viral over the past week for claiming there is a man living inside of Chicago's Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, commonly known as "The Bean." Sporting all-black outfits and wielding homemade cardboard signs, the group has been handing out flyers and encouraging the public to contact Chicago Alderman Brendan Riley to "free" the man inside the sculpture. The protests began during Lollapalooza, which ran July 31 through Aug. 3. "There is a man inside The Bean," one of the protesters said in a video that has garnered thousands of views on social media. "We're calling for his immediate release. In 2004, Anish Kapoor, the chief architect of The Bean, stole a baby and put that baby inside The Bean. We are calling for the immediate release of the man trapped inside The Bean, so please, spread the good word." In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Riley said the "online hoax" has led to an influx of calls, proving to be a "distraction for my office from the real work we do for the 42nd Ward and City of Chicago each day." An Instagram account dedicated to the viral protest, Man in Bean, had garnered more than 23,600 followers as of Tuesday, Aug. 5. The Man in Bean team did not immediately respond for comment on the protests when contacted by USA TODAY via Instagram on Aug. 5. Designed by Kapoor, Cloud Gate was constructed between 2004 and 2006. The sculpture was made using computer technology to cut 168 stainless steel plates, which were then pieced together, like a puzzle, on-site, according to the Millennium Park Foundation. The massive sculpture is 33 feet high and weighs about 110 tons. What are Chicago officials saying? While Riley said the lighthearted protest has resulted in a strain on his office, he also provided a tongue-in-cheek response. "I am happy to confirm that a man has not been trapped inside Cloud Gate (a.k.a 'the Bean') for the past 21 years," he said. "In fact, the man was freed years ago. Further, we can neither confirm nor deny that Soldier Field is actually a flying saucer secretly relocated from Area 51 back in 2003." Is there really a man inside The Bean? Despite the ongoing protests, there is no evidence that a man lives inside The Bean. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Email her at gcross@

Celine Dion's fierce defence of son is a lesson in handling 'unwanted advice'

Celine Dion, 57, is a singing icon, but at home her most important role is being mum to her three sons, René-Charles, 24, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 14. The star showed the extent of a mother's love when she fiercely defended her eldest son in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, which has now resurfaced online. Re-shared this year by Instagram fan account, @celinedionfashion, the clip showed Celine being interviewed by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and things took a turn when Ellen asked when she was going to cut off her son's long hair. "Do you have a problem with that?" was Celine's speedy response. "Whatever I will do, I won't please everyone," she quipped, and also went on to reveal that "Rene-Charles makes his own decisions." MORE TO READ Celine Dion opens up about how her three sons have privately dealt with her health battle Fans praised how Celine handled the situation with one writing: "Celine did that with style, education and respect! She's amazing!" and another adding: "Do you have a problem with that? Put Ellen in place right there." A third penned: "Sooooo classy! So admirable, Céline!" and a fourth added: "Glad Ellen is not on TV anymore; she was not kind." Mum-of-one Features Editor, Miranda Thompson, shares her experience on unsolicited advice about children. "When it comes to unwanted advice about my son, I have to always try to remember people think they're being helpful, not malicious, and that it's likely they're trying to offer their own support in their own way. If it really winds me up, I'll take a deep breath and vent to a mum chat later!" she says. Celine shares her sons with late music producer René Angélil, who sadly passed away in 2003. On Father's Day, Celine shared a heartfelt message to her late husband. "You may no longer be by our side, but your love lives within us. You taught our boys to be kind, to believe in who they are, and to take care of one another. That's the greatest gift of all." Celine's health Celine has been plagued with health battles in recent years. In 2022, she revealed her Stiff-Person Syndrome diagnosis. The rare neurological disorder causes painful spasms and mobility issues. She first began experiencing symptoms in 2008, but it took years to get properly diagnosed. In July 2024, she made her triumphant return to the stage at the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, performing live from the Eiffel Tower, after having to cancel many shows ahead of that. René-Charles was on hand to cheer and support his mom in Paris on this very special occasion, and he was visibly emotional. In a backstage clip, Celine's son was seen wiping away tears after his mother's spectacular showing as a crew member rubs his shoulder for support. Upon her return, Celine then pulls her son into a tight hug as they both lean into the emotional embrace. Where does Celine Dion live? The hitmaker traded living in an actual waterpark for a luxurious $1.2 million mansion when she started her Vegas residency – and she's been living there ever since. Over the years, we've seen glimpses inside her beautifully decorated abode where everything is immaculately tidied and super luxurious.

Barack and Michelle Obama embrace in photo after mocking divorce speculation

Michelle and Barack Obama look smitten in a rare photo together. The "IMO" podcast co-host, 61, took to Instagram on Aug. 4 to celebrate the former U.S. president's birthday, writing in a caption: "Happy birthday to my love, my best friend, my everything! @BarackObama, even after all these years, you're still the coolest guy I know." In the snap, the "Becoming" author wrapped her arms around her husband, now 64, whose right arm was swathed around her as he leaned in. Obama commented, "Love you, Miche! And thanks everybody for all the birthday wishes." Recently, rumors swirled that the former first couple, who have been married since 1992, were on the rocks. Whispers about the status of their marriage reached a fever pitch in January when Michelle sat out the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter and later the second inauguration of President Donald Trump. Barack and Michelle's photo was taken while filming a July 16 podcast episode. In it, the couple addressed rumors surrounding their marriage as Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson quipped, "Wait, you guys like each other?" Barack Obama jokingly said "she took me back," adding with a hint of sarcasm that "it was touch and go for a while." During the podcast episode, Robinson shared a story about a woman he met in Wichita, Kansas, who asked him about the divorce rumors and was thrilled to find out they were untrue. Both Obamas appeared tickled by the story, with Barack, in particular, confirming that he rarely sees the rumors until someone on his team informs him. Michelle and Barack Obama break silence break silence on divorce rumors "There hasn't been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quittin' my man. And we've had some really hard times," Michelle Obama added. "We have had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures and I have become a better person because of the man I'm married to."
