Victor Wembanyama Cleared to Play After Season-Ending Blood Clots
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been fully cleared and expects to play next season after dealing with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder for the last few months, he told the French newspaper L'Equipe in remarks published Monday. "I'm officially cleared to return. … I'll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again," Wembanyama told the French sports daily. There was no immediate comment from the Spurs on the report. It has been expected that the team anticipated Wembanyama would be able to start this coming season, though there was no official word until now. Wembanyama was the league's rookie of the year two years ago, and Spurs guard Stephon Castle won that same trophy this past season. Wembanyama was the front-runner to be defensive player of the year last season when he was diagnosed with the blood clot in his right shoulder in February. He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists when he was shut down; the only other player in NBA history to finish a season averaging all that was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76. Wembanyama has traveled extensively in recent months and spent time last month at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China. The temple is a place that welcomes visitors who wish to study Chan meditation, Shaolin Kung Fu, traditional Chinese medicine and more. Reporting by The Associated Press. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama cleared to return from blood clot, per report
San Antonio Spurs All-Star center Victor Wembanyama said he has been cleared to play following a blood clot in his shoulder that was diagnosed in late February and ended his 2024-25 season. "I got the green light from the Spurs' medical staff just (on Friday)," Wembanyama told French sports outlet L'Equipe. 'Phew, I'll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again." The 2023-24 NBA rookie of the year played in 46 games last season, averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals and shooting 47.6% from the field, 35.2% on 3-pointers and 83.6% on free throws. He was on his way to winning Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA when the team announced on Feb. 20 that 'Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco. Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season. The team will provide updates as appropriate.' The Spurs were 34-48 last season and drafted Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick and Carter Bryant with the No. 14 pick in the 2025 draft. They also acquired De'Aaron Fox from Sacramento at the trade deadline in February and are looking to make a jump in the Western Conference standings with Mitch Johnson taking over as coach, Johnson replaces Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich who stepped down in May amid health problems. He sustained a stroke in November and did not return to the bench as coach. He remains part of the organization as president of basketball operations.

Their fans refer to themselves as 'Regs,' and the twosome has been hired by such national brands as HBO, Apple+, Walmart, L'Oreal and Applebee's to create culture-driven content. And Owen has appeared in Abbott Elementary, Dave and Veep. 'We could not be more excited to bring The Regular Sketch Show on the road,' Owen and Neal said in a joint statement. 'Social media has made it easier to reach the masses, but there is something special about performing comedy on stage. It's vulnerable, intimate and best of all allows us to meet our Regs in person.'
