Ensemble Intercontemporain/Bleuse review – from a clown to a clarinet and Cathy Berberian

Twin titans of the 20th-century avant garde, Luciano Berio and Pierre Boulez were born seven months apart in 1925. This well-crafted concert by Ensemble Intercontemporain, the orchestra Boulez founded in 1976, avoided the obvious hits while demonstrating just how different their music could be. Berio's Sequenza V for solo trombone is one of 14 pieces he wrote to test the boundaries of particular instruments or vocal types. It was inspired by Grock, a Swiss-born clown and one-time neighbour of the composer, whose personality had fascinated him as a boy. Lucas Ounissi, ambling on in full circus slap and a lime-green wig, put his instrument through its paces. Juggling a handheld plunger mute, he rasped and farted away, frequently singing and playing at the same time. A virtuoso performance showed off the breadth of the composer's imagination as well as his singular sense of humour. The more sober-minded Boulez was represented by his Dialogue de l'ombre double (Dialogue of the Double Shadow). Written to celebrate Berio's 60th birthday, it pits an on-stage clarinettist against his pre-recorded doppelganger, the latter electronically manipulated in real time and piped into the auditorium through speakers. The versatile Jérôme Comte hot-desked from one music stand to another, taking melismatic licks and frenetic outbursts in his stride. Rock-solid technique and calm deliberation brought clarity and purpose to Boulez's intricate demands. The pre-record, meanwhile, bounced off the walls and ceiling of the Royal Albert Hall in a mesmerising wash of surround sound. The grand finale was Berio's Recital I (For Cathy), a piece the composer wrote in 1972 for his former wife Cathy Berberian. The conceit is theatrical: an operatic diva shows up for a recital only to find her accompanist isn't there. An ensemble of 17 takes up the cause, with the singer descending into madness as she tosses off scatter-gun quotes from vocal works of the past. Berberian's visceral account, captured on record, was a tour de force. Sarah Aristidou certainly acted a good fight, with conductor Pierre Bleuse gamely adding his dramatic six penn'orth, but the spoken text was barely audible, rendering the work more gnomic than usual. Listen again on BBC Sounds until 12 October. The Proms continue until 13 September.

Lizzo shows off her 'back fat' and goes braless in a figure-hugging metallic gown as she poses up a storm in Paris

Lizzo showed off her 'back fat' as she slipped her curves into a figure-hugging metallic gown in a sizzling new snap amid her getaway to Paris. The singer, 37, looked incredible while modelling the shimmering champagne number as she struck a pose on a rooftop during her trip to the French capital on Wednesday. While the Truth Hurts hitmaker looked great from the back, further snaps on her Instagram showed Lizzo wowing from the front too, as she went braless in the golden ensemble. Lizzo oozed confidence as she tipped her head back and ran her hand through her hair in the jaw-dropping images which showed the Eiffel Tower in the background. The star, who recently wowed fans with her weight loss, looked happy and at ease in the images, which she captioned: 'Issa back fat summer.' Lizzo has clearly been enjoying her time in summer, having snapped further photos in the same location just days before. This time, the About Damn Time singer donned a skimpy cream ruffled crop top and matching shorts while posing in front of the Eiffel Tower. It comes after Lizzo discussed her 'complicated relationship' with food and revealed how she shed the pounds in a new video earlier this month. The US songstress, who has undergone a weight loss transformation, shared her journey and gave an insight into her new diet. Speaking to Women's Health as part of their Fuel Like series, Lizzo explained: 'My relationship with eating has evolved so much. 'We've had highs and we've had lows. Like it's a very complicated relationship. Um there have been times where I have undernourished myself. 'There have been times where I was binging. I feel like right now in my life when I intuitively eat and listen to my body, that always works out for me.' Lizzo admitted she went through a phase of feeling 'very low energy' which led her to 'eating animal protein' again. She continued: 'I had a period where I was experiencing a lot of like stomach pain and and stomach issues. 'So my trainer at the time, he noticed my diet and he was like, you know, I highly suggest a Japanese diet. 'When I had the opportunity to go to Japan for the first time, I was like, "All right, let's let's put our toe in the water with a country whose food I know is very, very clean." 'And I started eating animal proteins over there. And I felt incredible.' In June, Lizzo explained that she started to take Ozempic at the beginning of her weight loss journey in 2023, but soon came to the conclusion that GLP-1 medication wouldn't help her in the long term. 'I tried everything. Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full.' The singer, who has undergone a weight loss transformation, shared her journey and gave an insight into her new diet and lifestyle Lizzo then added, 'But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it's the same thing.' While the star made the choice to stop taking Ozempic early on, she stated that she didn't see it as 'cheating' for those that have taken the medication to help with losing weight. 'It's not easy. It's a drug to help somebody with something they're struggling with,' the performer expressed.

Netflix drops first trailer for Suranne Jones' political thriller Hostage - and viewers all say the same thing about Vigil star playing the Prime Minister

Netflix has just released its first trailer for the-hotly anticipated political thriller Hostage starring Suranne Jones - and fans are already saying the same thing. The high-stakes drama is anchored by a powerful performance from English actress Suranne. The 46-year-old Vigil star not only plays the UK Prime Minister, but she also held a vital role as executive producer, marking her first project with Netflix. When the British PM's husband is kidnapped and the visiting French President is blackmailed, the two political leaders both face difficult choices. The plot follows the ensuing rivalry where both their political futures and personal lives might hang in the balance - and they must gamble cleverly to come out on top. Although the series itself is exciting enough, it is Suranne's presence that has fans eagerly awaiting the August 21 release date. Adoring followers rushed to social media to express their excitement about the former Corrie star's Netflix debut. One wrote online: 'Love anything that Suranne does. Very talented!' Another echoed the sentiment, saying: 'I am so excited for this! I can't wait to see Suranne Jones in this.' Known for her roles in Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster and A Touch Of Cloth, the Greater Manchester native has built a loyal following. One wrote: 'I really like this actor Suranne Jones, she was great in Vigil,' while another chimed in 'Suranne is a super great actor. Looks exciting and riveting.' It seems charmed followers will follow Suranne wherever her career takes her, with one gushing: 'Absolutely brilliant actress. Anything she does on screen - the audience is hooked. Can't wait.' Of the project, Suranne herself said: 'I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I'm really proud of.' 'It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. 'Hostage was perfect - me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.' The five-part series is written by Matt Charman, the Oscar nominee behind war thriller Bridge Of Spies. Charman, too, is chuffed to have Suranne on board, saying: 'I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she's done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. 'An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family - she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her.' The brand new series will see Suranne as Abigail Dalton, Julie Delpy as Vivienne Toussaint and Corey Mylchreest as Matheo Lewis. They will be joined by Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo and Jehnny Beth. Netflix has previously released a sneak peek at the new show, with Suranne as her alter-ego waving outside 10 Downing Street with a smile on her face. While in another she looked very serious in a tie dye blouse and burgundy blazer while standing next to Julie as the fictional French president Vivienne. Suranne has been active in the acting scene for the past 29 years. She was initially best known for playing Karen McDonald in ITV's Coronation Street. She played the iconic character in the soap between 2000 and 2004. But since then she's appeared in various other series over the years. Adoring followers rushed to social media to express their excitement about the former Corrie star's Netflix debut Surrane has landed roles in the likes of Harley Street, Unforgiven, Doctor Who and Scott & Bailey. She's also played Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack, DCI Amy Silva in Vigil and Gemma Foster in Doctor Foster. This year she has also taken on the role of Suz in Film Club and Bert in Frauds. It comes after it was revealed that one of Suranne's other shows is set to return to our screens soon. Filming for the BBC hit is due to begin later this year in Scotland, with the third instalment of the police show airing in 2026. The Emmy-winning programme also stars Rose Leslie as DI Kirsten Longacre. It follows the two detectives as they tackle a case at a remote Arctic research station where a member of a British special forces mission was killed. Nominated for a BAFTA in 2022, the new series is set to be packed full of action and cast members are buzzing to begin production.
