Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh leads Mizoram in celebrating International Day of Yoga 2025
The ceremony, attended by approximately 700 yoga practitioners, was led by Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd), accompanied by Lady Governor Bharti Singh. Organised by the National AYUSH Mission and the Directorate of AYUSH, the event exemplified unity and a commitment to holistic well-being.
While addressing the gathering on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd), expressed his appreciation for the increasing number of people worldwide who continue to embrace yoga, a practice that originated in India and has now spread globally, transcending borders and cultures. The annual observance of the International Day of Yoga is a matter of pride and a significant recognition for India, he added.
He further highlighted that yoga promotes overall well-being by harmonising the body, mind and spirit and that different forms of yoga exercises are designed to enhance both physical and mental health in their unique ways.
The Governor elaborated on the significance and practice of yoga, stating that it encompasses physical fitness, stress relief, and mental clarity in a meaningful way.
He noted that practising yoga correctly not only leads to good health but also cautioned that improper practice could have negative effects.
He urged yoga enthusiasts to continue learning from experts and practitioners under the AYUSH Ministry. He also lauded Mizoram's impressive Air Quality Index, noting that its pristine environment fosters health and happiness, creating an ideal setting for promoting yoga in the years to come.
The event featured a live telecast of the Prime Minister's address from Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, which inspired attendees.
Participants then engaged in the Common Yoga Protocol, guided by expert instructors, performing a series of exercises to promote physical and mental wellness. Dr. SR Ngurchamliana, Director of Hospital & Medical Education, Health & Family Welfare Department, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude for the collective participation.
The Ministry of AYUSH designated ten signature events for International Day of Yoga 2025, with Mizoram hosting two: Yoga Sangam and Harit Yoga. Yoga Sangam showcased widespread participation, highlighting yoga's unifying appeal, while Harit Yoga integrated wellness with environmental conservation through tree-planting and cleanliness initiatives.
Across the state, tree-planting activities were conducted, with the Directorate of AYUSH distributing medicinal plant saplings to promote a sustainable future.
The theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' emphasised not only personal health but also environmental stewardship, advocating for a harmonious relationship with nature. Celebrations extended across Mizoram's districts, with tailored events at District Hqrs., Hospitals, Health and Wellness Centres, educational institutions, organisations and government departments, reflecting the state's dedication to this global initiative. "Telangana Rising 2047" aims to make Hyderabad hub for medical, health tourism
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 2 (ANI): Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has stated that medical tourism will be included as one of the priority sectors in the 'TelanganaRising 2047' document, which the State Government is preparing, as stated in the release. According to the release, Hyderabad has already become a centre of excellence in medical care, and patients from various countries visit the city for medical treatment. The Chief Minister stated that the 'Telangana Rising' document will focus more on developing the historical city of Hyderabad as a hub for medical and health tourism in the country. Stating that the government is moving forward with plans to provide free medical care and quality education to the poor, CM Revanth Reddy said the government has already earmarked Rs 11,500 crore funds for the development of the medical sector and Rs 21,500 crore for education in the current financial year. Doctor Nori Dattatreya has also been appointed as a cancer care consultant to the government. The CM emphasised that the government hospitals should compete with private corporate hospitals, and the doctors should serve in government hospitals for at least one month as a social responsibility. The Chief Minister said that the State government is already providing free medical treatment to the poor up to Rs 10 lakhs, and there is a need to take more precautions to prevent health problems. For this, the government is planning to create a health profile card for women in self-help groups. The health profile cards will have a unique ID. Appealing to AIG Hospital Chairman Dr Nageshwar Reddy to join as a partner with the government in the endeavour to strengthen the medical and health sectors, CM Revanth Reddy said that it is a matter of pride that patients from 66 countries are coming for treatment at AIG Hospital. 'Dr Nageshwar Reddy has brought laurels to Hyderabad and Telangana, and he deserves India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna,' said the Telangana CM. The CM said he will pursue the centre to recognise the noted doctor's services and present the prestigious award to him. The visit of Miss World contestants to the renowned hospital showcased the advancements in medical care in Telangana on a global scale. Listing out initiatives taken by the government to strengthen medical care, the Chief Minister said that the family doctor system once existed, but specialist doctor services are now in high demand. Government hospitals are already under construction in different parts of the State and the works for the new Osmania hospital are under progress. A total of 7000 additional beds will be available after the completion of all new hospital building works, the CM said. Since Hyderabad has become a hub of IT and emerging healthcare services provider in the world, the Chief Minister said that government is holding talks with the union government to increase direct flight connectivity between Middle East countries and Hyderabad. More air connectivity will help Hyderabad to develop further. (ANI)

Delhi HC directs DCGI to examine weight loss drug combinations, instructs to take expert consultation
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): The Delhi High Court has directed the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to examine and address issues raised in a petition challenging the approval and sale of certain weight loss drug combinations in India. The Court instructed the DCGI to consult medical experts, stakeholders, and drug manufacturers before arriving at any regulatory decision. The bench of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela acknowledged the issues raised and stressed the need for initial regulatory scrutiny. The petitioner has been permitted to submit an additional representation within two weeks, supplementing a previous one submitted in April. The Court further directed the DCGI to provide a well-reasoned decision within three months, considering expert advice and industry input. The proceedings arise from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on the sale of weight loss drugs that are still undergoing clinical trials internationally. The PIL specifically raised concern over India's approval of GLP-1 RA drugs--Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and Liraglutide--for weight loss and cosmetic purposes without adequate India-specific trials, safety data, or regulatory checks. Originally developed for diabetes treatment, these drugs are now under global scrutiny for potentially severe side effects, including cancer risks, organ damage, and neurological complications, the plea stated. The plea also flags the aggressive, unregulated marketing of these drugs--especially to younger demographics--alongside the absence of post-market surveillance and transparency in approval processes. It argues that these regulatory lapses threaten the constitutional right to health and calls for immediate judicial oversight to avert a potential public health crisis. The plea was filed by Jitendra Chouksey, with Senior Advocate Diya Kapur leading the arguments, assisted by Advocate Rohit Kumar. (ANI)

"We thank the government for promoting Zumba in schools," says Kerala School teacher
Thrissur (Kerala) [India], July 2 (ANI): As schools in Kerala begin Zumba dance sessions under the state's anti-drug campaign, Sangeetha C, a teacher at SN School, has lauded the initiative and expressed gratitude to the government for promoting Zumba in schools. The initiative has been included in the school curriculum with the objective of enhancing physical fitness and supporting the mental well-being of students. While speaking to ANI, Sangeetha C said, 'We are very excited to have Zumba in our school. The children need physical fitness. We thank the Kerala government for promoting Zumba in schools...' A student from the same school, Aleeda Mariya, shared similar sentiments. 'We are excited to be a part of the Zumba initiative brought by the Kerala government. We enjoy doing it. It is fun to do this,' she said. This program is part of the anti-drug campaign in schools in Kerala, aimed at helping students manage stress through physical activity. However, the initiative has faced criticism for allegedly encouraging inappropriate intermingling of boys and girls. Speaking to ANI, Roma Mansoor, a certified International Zumba Fitness instructor, said, 'I am happy to say that the Kerala government has taken initiative to promote Zumba in schools. It is a great initiative because nowadays children are addicted to many things that ruin their mindset. Zumba can help them relax their will help the children to increase their confidence. As it is a calorie-burning workout, it is a good move for weight management also...' Earlier on June 28, Muslim groups in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram raised strong objections after the state education department introduced Zumba dance in schools, stating that they can't accept girls and boys intermingling, dancing together, or wearing minimal clothing. The education department, on the other hand, defended its decision, saying the Zumba sessions were voluntary and were introduced under a statewide initiative to help students cope with academic pressure and discourage drug abuse. Meanwhile, Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty strongly defended the inclusion of Zumba dance in schools, stating that raising objections to such activities would inject poison that is more deadly than drugs into society.
