FIRs against corporator, contractor after man drowns in open drain

1 2 Lucknow: Two FIRs have been filed against a sitting corporator and a private contractor along with his firm in connection with the death of 43-year-old painter, who died after falling into a waterlogged and broken drain in Thakurganj area, sparking massive public outrage and concerns over civic apathy. The victim, Suresh Lodhi's wife Renu filed a complaint stating that her husband fell into a hidden, flooded drain while stepping out to buy tea on Saturday. The drain's cover was broken and submerged due to waterlogging, making it invisible. He was swept away and his body was recovered the next day near the IIM Road bypass drain. Renu accused corporator CB Singh of gross negligence, stating that multiple complaints and warnings about the broken and dangerous drain cover were submitted to him, both in person and through the public grievance portal. Despite repeated alerts about the potential for a fatal accident, no action was taken. "The drain was open and overflowing. We told them many times, but no repairs were done. My husband's death could have been prevented," she said in her statement. She further alleged that even after the tragedy, municipal workers failed to assist in searching for her husband's body, leaving the rescue entirely to local citizens. The FIR against the corporator was filed under the charges of causing death by negligence based on her complaint at Thakurganj police station. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? According to the engineer's complaint, the firm was responsible for cleaning and maintaining the storm drains in the area. He alleged that slabs covering the drain were removed during maintenance work but were not replaced, creating a serious safety hazard. The fatal accident, he stated, was a direct consequence of this contractual negligence. "The accused contractor, Ankit Kumar Ghawari, is a resident of C-6/8, Niralanagar, Lucknow. His firm Anika Enterprises has been booked under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence," said DCP (west zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava. Police said that both complaints are being investigated and further action will be taken after the collection of technical and witness evidence.

‘Most iconic moment': One year of Trump's assassination attempt at Butler; ‘cascade of preventable failures', says Senate committee

Donald Trump (AP) US President Trump along with first lady Melania trump travelled to East Rutherford to watch a match between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea at the MetLife stadium. He was attending the FIFA Club World Cup final hosted by the US alongside family members and close advisers. Sunday's match marks the one year anniversary of Trump surviving an assassination attempt at him at Butler, Pennsylvania, while he was campaigning for President. JD Vance, the vice president of US called the event the 'most iconic moment' that he has witnessed in American politics. 'Remains the most iconic moment I've ever seen in American politics. One year ago today,' his post on X read. "Preventable failures" A recently released report by the Senate committee asserts that the event last year was a 'cascade of preventable failures' and called for stronger measures to be taken with the Secret Service in the future. The committee reported that communications were mishandled in the rally attended by Trump an he was also not allotted extra security that day. 'A 20-year-old gunman was able to evade detection by the country's top protective agency for nearly 45 minutes,' said the committee adding that no one has been fired yet, as reported by the Guardian. Supervisors had anticipated that large pieces of farm equipment would be positioned to obstruct the view from the building. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo However, those were never put in place, and staffers who visited the site ahead of the rally failed to inform their supervisors that the line-of-sight issues remained unresolved, stated a report by the Secret Service, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. What had happened Michael Thomas Crooks, 20, had climbed on top of a roof of a nearby building in Butler while Trump was addressing a rally, and opened fire using an AROI5-style rifle, on July 13 2024. A bullet had grazed Trump's ear and left him wounded while Corey Comperatore, a person attending the rally was killed. The report released by the committee does not offer any new information on the motives of Crooks but does offer an insight on the incoherent communication between the Secret service and the local law enforcement who are responsible for securing events such as this. An investigation reiterated that there was a 'chaotic mixture' phone, mails, radio, text messages used to communicate on that day, as reported by Los Angeles Times. 'I can't understand how [so] many errors were made on that site that day,' said Anthony Cangelosi, a former Secret Service agent. 'If they agreed to leave that roof unoccupied, I can't ... understand it for the life of me,' he said. A year later Secret Service has suspended six agents but have stressed that they are not going to fire anyone and focus on the 'root cause' and 'fix deficiencies.' "We aren't going to fire our way out of this. We're going to focus on the root cause and fix the deficiencies that put us in that situation," said Secret Service deputy director Matt Quinn to CBS news. 'Since President Trump appointed me as director of the United States Secret Service, I have kept my experience on July 13 top of mind, and the agency has taken many steps to ensure such an event can never be repeated in the future,' said Sean Curran who was one of the agents standing near Trump as he was escorted off the stage after the shooting. Curran is now in charge of leading the Secret Service. The image of Trump defiantly raising his fist moments after the attack became a powerful political symbol, contributing to Joe Biden's exit from the race and rapidly intensifying support for Trump's presidency, reports The Guardian. A painting depicting the scene now hangs prominently in the foyer of the White House State Floor, near the staircase leading to the president's residence, as reported by AP.

As road rage cases take violent turn in Bengaluru, 17 make it to rowdy list

Bengaluru: From brawls triggered by splashing rainwater to fatal confrontations on the road, Bengaluru has seen a steady rise in cases of road rage over the past 3.5 years. Between 2022 and May 2025, police registered 88 such cases across the city, leading to the arrest of 123 people, including two women. Seventeen of those arrested have been listed as 'C-rowdy sheeters', a category meant for first-time offenders whose behaviour during the incident is seen as particularly aggressive or threatening. Some of these individuals, including professionals with no prior criminal record, followed their victims to their homes or offices after the altercation, attacked them again, or extorted money through death threats. In a few instances, attackers went as far as vandalising the victim's home after the initial roadside confrontation. "These 17 persons acted beyond reason. They threatened their opponents aggressively, which is why we categorised them as C-rowdies. We'll monitor them for a year. If there are no further incidents, the rowdy-sheet will be closed," a senior cop said. How to get Internet without paying a subscription? Techno Mag Learn More Undo The attacker bit his fingers during the scuffle, forcing the victim to undergo surgery costing around Rs 2 lakh. In another case, from Aug 2024 in Vidyaranyapura, a 21-year-old food delivery executive died on the spot after a speeding car rammed into his two-wheeler. Investigation revealed the car was intentionally driven into him following an instance of road rage. Women involved too Police records also show two significant cases of women being involved in violent road rage. In Jan 2023, a techie in Jnanabharathi was arrested on attempted murder charges after she drove 4km with a man clinging to her bonnet. The altercation began with her jumping a traffic signal and the man blocking her car. A couple of months ago in Bellandur, a woman from Bihar was filmed repeatedly hitting an autorickshaw driver with her slippers after a wheel of his vehicle allegedly ran over her foot. She later told police she lost her temper as she was pregnant at the time. According to additional commissioner of police (crime) Chandragupta, road rage is often a mix of frustration, anger, and ego. "In 99% of cases of road rage, the parties involved are strangers. The argument starts over a minor road-related issue but escalates because neither side can control their emotions. Often, family members or bystanders influence the situation, worsening it," he told TOI. When asked why people risk legal trouble despite knowing the consequences, he said: "In that moment, the aggressor is in a reactive mode. Legal consequences do not register." Delivery agent assaulted at traffic signal A 35-year-old food delivery agent was assaulted by three men near Modi Hospital Junction on West of Chord Road around midnight Saturday. The incident occurred after the delivery agent, Pemaram, refused to give way at a red signal. Pemaram, a resident of Rajajinagar, had just completed a delivery and was heading towards Navarang Theatre. At the junction, while waiting for the green signal, three men on a scooter honked and asked him to move through a narrow gap between vehicles. When he refused, they confronted him. "The trio got down from the scooter, started abusing me and then assaulted me. They beat me for nearly eight minutes," Pemaram told police. A crowd eventually gathered, forcing the attackers to flee. The assault disrupted traffic briefly at the junction. Pemaram sought treatment at KC General Hospital before lodging a complaint with Basaveshwaranagar police. Cops said efforts are on to trace and arrest the trio.
