Lucknow: Two FIRs have been filed against a sitting corporator and a private contractor along with his firm in connection with the death of 43-year-old painter, who died after falling into a waterlogged and broken drain in Thakurganj area, sparking massive public outrage and concerns over civic apathy.
The victim, Suresh Lodhi's wife Renu filed a complaint stating that her husband fell into a hidden, flooded drain while stepping out to buy tea on Saturday. The drain's cover was broken and submerged due to waterlogging, making it invisible. He was swept away and his body was recovered the next day near the IIM Road bypass drain.
Renu accused corporator CB Singh of gross negligence, stating that multiple complaints and warnings about the broken and dangerous drain cover were submitted to him, both in person and through the public grievance portal.
Despite repeated alerts about the potential for a fatal accident, no action was taken. "The drain was open and overflowing. We told them many times, but no repairs were done. My husband's death could have been prevented," she said in her statement.
She further alleged that even after the tragedy, municipal workers failed to assist in searching for her husband's body, leaving the rescue entirely to local citizens. The FIR against the corporator was filed under the charges of causing death by negligence based on her complaint at Thakurganj police station.

Simultaneously, a second FIR was lodged by Jhillu Ram, executive engineer of zone-6, LMC, against Ankit Kumar Ghawari, a private contractor, and his firm Anika Enterprises. According to the engineer's complaint, the firm was responsible for cleaning and maintaining the storm drains in the area. He alleged that slabs covering the drain were removed during maintenance work but were not replaced, creating a serious safety hazard.
The fatal accident, he stated, was a direct consequence of this contractual negligence.
"The accused contractor, Ankit Kumar Ghawari, is a resident of C-6/8, Niralanagar, Lucknow. His firm Anika Enterprises has been booked under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence," said DCP (west zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava.
Police said that both complaints are being investigated and further action will be taken after the collection of technical and witness evidence.

Blow to AAP: Court halts vigilance bureau raids on Majithia properties; prior notice required for any such move

Mohali: In a major setback to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt, a Mohali court on Tuesday barred the Punjab vigilance bureau from conducting any further raids on the properties of former minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia . The court directed that any future visits to Majithia's premises must be strictly for evaluation purposes and a 24-hour prior notice should be given to his counsel. The development was confirmed by advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler, legal counsel for Majithia, through a video statement released after the court orders. Kler revealed that although the court had permitted the investigation officer (IO) to visit the sites, the officer instead deployed multiple vigilance teams to Delhi, Amritsar, and Majitha. These visits were allegedly publicised to fuel a media trial, prompting immediate legal action, the counsel added. "The court has now clearly restrained the vigilance bureau from conducting any raids on Majithia's properties. Evaluation, if required, can only be done on the basis of items mentioned in the fard jama talashi and only with prior intimation," said Kler. Dismissing rumours regarding Majithia's alleged special treatment and health issues, Kler said: "He spent over five months in Patiala jail without requesting any facility. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? If anyone needs to worry about health, it's the chief minister himself." The next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 22 and the court has directed the vigilance bureau to submit complete videographic evidence of the raids already conducted. The ruling is being seen as a significant legal victory for Majithia and a political jolt to the ruling AAP.

Telangana high court refuses to quash case against Telangana ex-MLA in BMW crash cover-up

Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana high court on Tuesday refused to quash the criminal case filed against former Bodhan MLA Shakil Aamir Mohammed, his son Raheel Aamir, and several associates in connection with the Dec 2023 Begumpet barricade incident. The judge directed all accused, including the former legislator, to appear before the trial court whenever summoned. The case stems from an incident on Dec 24, 2023, when a speeding BMW rammed the barricades near the chief minister's camp office in Begumpet, causing damage. Initially, the Panjagutta police registered a case naming Abdul Asif as the driver. However, the investigation later revealed that the actual driver was Raheel, son of the former MLA. According to police, upon learning of the accident, Shakil allegedly pressured the Bodhan station house officer to coordinate with the Panjagutta SHO and falsely name Asif as the accused. The two SHOs involved were subsequently suspended and added as accused in the case. Prosecution against them is pending sanction from the state govt. Raheel, after securing bail from the trial court, allegedly left the country and has since ignored police notices. His absence has stalled the investigation, preventing the filing of a chargesheet. Police officials who responded at the scene on Dec 24 reportedly identified the driver and even conducted a medical test to determine if he was under the influence. A test identification parade is now pending, but it cannot proceed without Raheel's presence. Shalini Saxena, assisting the public prosecutor, informed the court that the investigation is at a standstill due to Raheel's non-cooperation. Justice Lakshman also dismissed a separate plea filed by M Hanuman Nani, another accused, who is alleged to have helped an SHO evade legal proceedings. The court reiterated that all accused must appear before the trial court and face trial as per procedure.

Suspicion of extra-marital affair leads to 32-year-od's murder

Rajkot: In a crime allegedly driven by an extramarital affair, a 32-year-old man was stabbed to death by his wife's lover in Jasdan town of Rajkot. The Jasdan police arrested the assailant, Bhavesh Kukadiya, who stabbed Jeram Sadadiya to death while Jeram and his wife were asleep inside their house. Jeram was married to Surti for eight years, and the couple had a son and a daughter. Two years into the marriage, Surti started working in a catering service, and Bhavesh was her co-worker. Police said that Jeram began suspecting an affair between the two. He warned both to cut ties, which led to frequent altercations between the couple. Surti would often leave for her maternal home after disputes and most recently returned on the eve of June 27. On the night of July 14, Bhavesh reportedly came to Jeram's house and asked about his whereabouts. He left after Jeram's sister, Daya, told him not to enter. Later, Jeram's daughter, Payal, informed the family that Bhavesh had been talking in the village about stabbing her father. The family rushed to the farmland residence and asked Jeram to return home, but he refused, the FIR lodged by the deceased's mother, Hansa, stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Are Ditching Finger Pricks with This Breakthrough Monitor Thelifeh Undo Later that night, a relative informed Hansa that Jeram was attacked.
