Lakers are 'really confident' Luka Doncic will agree to extension

USA Today3 days ago
The Los Angeles Lakers may or not may be done making roster moves this summer. But they still have something big to get done before training camp starts in about two and a half months.
Luka Doncic will be eligible to sign a contract extension on Aug. 2, and the Lakers can offer him $228 million over four years. He is currently preparing to represent his native Slovenia in the upcoming Eurobasket tournament, and he will not return to the States until very late in the offseason.
It isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion that Doncic will agree to an extension before the start of the 2025-26 season, and if he doesn't, he can opt out of his current contract next summer. But Dan Woike of The Athletic told Colin Cowherd during an appearance on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" that the franchise is very confident it will get the superstar to sign on the dotted line soon.
'It's gonna be early August. He's extension eligible Aug. 2. I think they're really confident, Colin. I think they've been in contact with him early in the summer about their plans for the organization. I think when they made the deal to get him, I think they were confident that they would be able to secure him in the long term. There are things about Los Angeles to not like. Nobody likes the traffic here and stuff like this. But the one thing we know about Luka Doncic is, well two things we know about him. One, he loves the big stage, and it's a huge stage. What's a bigger stage than playing at Crypto.com in front of those stars? And I think the second part of it is like, this is like a guy that doesn't necessarily love being famous. And you might think Los Angeles, well it's full of famous people. You can move pretty anonymously as a famous person in Los Angeles should you choose because there's always someone else famous in your circle and stuff like that. I think he's really comfortable there. I'm pretty sure the Lakers are gonna be able to secure an extension, it's just kind of a matter of for how long.'
Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists a game and shot 37.9% from 3-point range in 28 regular-season games with L.A. after being traded there on Feb. 1. He has gotten himself into better shape this offseason after facing lots of criticism for his lack of fitness and conditioning, and Woike reported that the superstar has been "Incredibly committed" to his conditioning and diet.
This new dedication could result in an enhanced version of Doncic moving forward, and the Lakers could reap the benefits as long as they get him to agree to some sort of extension soon.

Lakers have waived Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin to create space for Marcus Smart

On Saturday, veteran guard Marcus Smart agreed to join the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $11 million contract after the Washington Wizards bought out his previous contract. But first, the Lakers had a little work to do to be able to legally sign Smart. With almost no room left under the first apron of the NBA's salary cap, they needed to make a couple of roster moves to free up enough space to bring in Smart. On Sunday, they started by waiving guard Shake Milton, who was due $3 million this coming season. Later, they also waived guard Jordan Goodwin, whom they called up from the G League at midseason. Milton was thrown into the late December trade that brought Los Angeles forward Dorian Finney-Smith for D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis and second-round draft compensation. A seven-year veteran, he never really cracked coach JJ Redick's rotation, and he averaged 3.9 points in 11.5 minutes a game after joining L.A. Goodwin, 26, showed some promise in 29 games with the Lakers. He put up 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 38.2% from 3-point range. The Illinois native consistently hustled for rebounds and loose balls and showed a willingness to play hard on the defensive end. Since Goodwin has four years of NBA experience, he was ineligible to be a member of the Lakers on a two-way contract. Lakers to sign Christian Koloko, Chris Manon to two-way contracts

After getting former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart to agree to sign a two-year contract, the Los Angeles Lakers made a couple more minor roster moves on Monday. During NBA summer league play, they got a look at some of their young players. Guard Bronny James, after a slow start, put forth some promising play on both ends of the court, and forward Darius Bazley played some high-energy basketball until he suffered a leg injury in the team's penultimate game. On Monday, the Lakers decided to sign center Christian Koloko and wing Chris Manon to two-way contracts. Koloko was with them during summer league play, while Manon suited up for the Golden State Warriors. Koloko was a second-round draft pick in 2022 after three seasons at the University of Arizona. He missed all of the 2022-23 season due to a blood clot issue, and in 37 games with the Lakers this past season, he averaged 2.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 9.2 minutes a game. While in the G League, he put up 14.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per contest. He had originally signed with L.A. on a two-way contract last summer. Manon, who went undrafted in last month's NBA draft, averaged 11.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals in 18.1 minutes a game during the Las Vegas summer league. He isn't a 3-point shooting threat, but at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, he hustles and plays hard on the defensive end and has a strong motor. On Sunday, the Lakers waived guard Jordan Goodwin, whom they had called up from the G League at midseason. Perhaps Manon will essentially be Goodwin's replacement as far as a high-motor wing they will look to develop. Lakers linked to blockbuster deal for Jrue Holiday in latest trade rumors

Jrue Holiday was one of the first big names on the move this offseason as the Boston Celtics traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons. While Portland is looking to make a postseason push in 2024-25, many have predicted that the 35-year-old will be rerouted as he does not fit the organization's timeline. Although there were many who believed that he could play a mentor role for the young roster, the Trail Blazers recently signed franchise legend Damian Lillard -- alleviating the need for a veteran presence. The two-time All-Star guard was recently named as a player to monitor on the trade market. Grant Afseth of Fastbreak Journal revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers could target Holiday, if he is made available. "Multiple sources recently told that Holiday is a name to monitor, particularly as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers," Fastbreak Journal's Grant Afseth wrote Sunday. "That's not to say active conversations are taking place, but his name continues to surface in NBA circles as the team evaluates options to add more talent around LeBron James and Luka Dončić. Other teams are monitoring the situation, though the Lakers are widely viewed as one of the most natural fits if Portland explores a deal." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Afseth noted that the Lakers could pair several expiring contracts to match salaries and acquire Holiday, who is set to make $32.4 million in 2025-26. He suggested that the deal could be expanded to include Robert Williams III, another potential target for Los Angeles. The NBA reporter added that the organization has placed an emphasis on acquiring players that Luka Dončić values. The superstar guard has previously praised Holiday, labeling him as the best perimeter defender in the league. His $37.2 million player option could present an obstacle in a potential deal, however, as the Lakers have reportedly been operating with the objective of keeping their books clean for the stacked 2027 free agent class -- where they hope to find a long-term co-star for Dončić. The opportunity to acquire the six-time All-Defensive Team guard, however, could be too good to pass up. Holiday has won two titles in the past five seasons, helping the Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics both hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy in his first year on each roster. While Los Angeles has an eye on the future, they also have a roster that is built to win due to the presence of Dončić and LeBron James. More NBA:
