Farmgate restaurant delighted by 'great and unexpected' inclusion in Michelin Guide

The remarkable resurrection of Sally O'Brien's Farmgate restaurant in Lismore, Co Waterford continues apace with news that the restaurant has just been selected for inclusion in the prestigious Michelin Guide.
The restaurant that 'came back from the dead' was forced to re-open last year in a new location.
'It's such a great honour,' said O'Brien, 'to be recognised by Michelin — and very unexpected, we only opened 13 months ago and it's great for the team's morale, in particular, for the kitchen team, a recognition of the beautiful food they are cooking each day.'
Less than two years ago, O'Brien was being advised to seek an alternative career after the catastrophic flooding of Midleton, in East Cork, damaged the Farmgate Midleton restaurant established by her mother, Máróg O'Brien, so badly that the restaurant was forced to close permanently almost 40 years after it first opened in 1984.
'We thought it was all over after the flooding,' said Sally O'Brien, 'and that's the truth, the building was unusable. Everyone told me to go off and retrain for another career, something else for an easier life, especially because the restaurant industry is in such a state, so this is really encouraging.'
Máróg O'Brien, who also co-founded the Farmgate Café, in the English Market, with her sister, Kay, had bought an old Victorian building in Lismore, in 2017, previously home to The Chop House restaurant, and before that, for many generations, a pub, but it was only during the pandemic that she and daughter Sally set about a serious renovation and refurbishment of a building that had been idle for several years.

Sally O'Brien, who had managed the Midleton Farmgate for many years, opened Farmgate Lismore just 13 months ago and it wasn't long before it began to attract attention and acclaim, with reviews in national newspapers, including a very positive one in the Irish Examiner by this writer, praising both the exceptional refurbishment of a very lovely building and garden and a high standard of delivery from the kitchen to match.
The Michelin Guide also singled out the refurbishment and noted the "sensibly priced menu" of "fuss-free cooking and prime, locally sourced produce" used to create "terrific dishes with a certain comfort-food quality", and also noted the "knowledgable service" carried out with "engaging charm".
'The Michelin Guide beautifully captures the experience we hope all diners will have here,' said Sally O'Brien, 'It's been very tough to try and get up and running from scratch all over again in Lismore, and it's a very difficult time for the industry at large, so it is very encouraging to be included in the guide.'

This time out they accept bookings, much to the relief of those who struggled to get tables before, and there's also wine to accompany lunch. Small sharing plates of smoky aubergine, calf's liver with fenugreek butter, and radicchio dressed with guanciale fat epitomise the eclectic Italian influence for which this cosy spot is much loved. At a recent meal, a parade of canapés (warm mushroom beignet, pissaladière hidden in transparent pastry) was followed with Loire Valley asparagus, wild turbot, Anjou pigeon and razor-sharp desserts. Photograph: Patrick Browne Peter Hogan and Jumoke Akintola have stripped things back at their Victorian townhouse seafood spot in Tramore, now running a casual Fish & Chips Café on the ground floor. Light beer-battered fish – John Dory, haddock, whiting – leads the menu, backed by daily specials like Woodstown Bay oysters, Boatstrand crab salad and Roaring Water Bay mussel curry. It operates as a diningroom from Friday to Sunday. The wine list is as impressive as ever, and organic and biodynamic wines are poured by the glass, bottle or carafe. Aisling Moore's creativity seems to know no bounds, creating pâté made from local meaty Rossmore oysters, Mexican-inspired pibil monk cheek sope or pan-fried megrim with cafe de Paris butter. There are generous mounds of crushed colcannon for sides and a modern wine selection available by the glass, carafe or bottle. All pasta is made fresh every day, using flour from an ancient Italian grain grown by owner Roberto Mungo himself. New additions to the menu include cappellacci stuffed with slow-cooked beef and onion, romanesco artichoke ravioli, and spaghetti with asparagus, saltwort and Calabrian chilli breadcrumbs. At Kicky's, chef Eric Matthews and team will take you through a spectrum from refined to indulgent. Think mussels bound lightly in taramasalata with smoked eel and kohlrabi, wild brill cooked over charcoal or rabbit Bolognese. The choux with horseradish and Cantabrian anchovy has been there since day one. Small plates include marinated peppers with salsa verde and kohlrabi, followed by a tranche of turbot with jus gras, sorrel and Béarnaise. Shipshape Cork city renovation floated at €350k

AT this time of the year, it's not unusual to see properties coming up for sale in the University College Cork (UCC) area that have been bought and renovated by parents for use by their student offspring. What's remarkable about this one, No 30 Wycherley Place, off College Road, is the transformation. Corner-set Peninsula House When Stephen Clarke, of REA O'Donoghue & Clarke, sold this end-of-terrace property to the owners for their daughter in 2019, it was a drab, run-down ex-rental with two bedrooms, 59 sq m of living space, and a low BER. The interior now is almost totally unrecognisable. New to the market for €350,00, it's smart, stylish, and full of character, with three bedrooms, 84 sq m of accommodation, and a C3 BER. Renamed Peninsula House, it has higher ceilings than before and has been fitted with a modern kitchen and bathroom, laminate flooring, and a new staircase. The additional bedroom on the upper floor has a small balcony, a feature that is almost unheard of in this type of property. Bunk in 'The three of us — my husband, my daughter, and myself — spent a year doing it up and put our heart and soul in to it,' says the student's mother, explaining that her husband is a carpenter and did a lot of the work. They started by gutting the inside, taking down walls and ceilings, and removing plasterwork. 'All that was left was four walls, the double-glazed windows, which were put in previously.' Small ground-floor rooms have now been replaced with an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room with laminate flooring, grey and white shaker-style units, and a higher ceiling. 'When we removed the plaster, we found a section with London red-stock bricks of the type that were used for ballast by ships in the 19th century and were able to use this as a feature,' says the owner. Deep blue yonder They added to the character by exposing and painting a stone wall on the other side of the room and fitting reclaimed timber doors, which they sourced on DoneDeal, refurbished and fitted with latched handles. Giving a smart makeover to the shower room at the rear, they tiled it in blue, put in contemporary fittings, and added a skylight. The yard was converted into a WC and a high-ceilinged utility room that has modern appliances, as well as a Victorian-style pulley system for drying clothes. The replacement staircase has rope bannisters of the type you see on ships and all three bedrooms have laminate flooring and exposed ceiling beams. 'To improve the energy efficiency, we put in internal insulation,' says the owner, adding that they also fitted a stove and installed energy-efficient electric radiators. 'We gave it its name because it sits, like a peninsula, on the corner between Wycherley Terrace and Wycherley Place and we were told by neighbours that a previous owner spent so much time looking out from it that she became known as Mrs Peninsula, ' the owner says. Shipshape Such was the high level of interest in the property — which is located within a five-minute walk of UCC — that Mr Clarke scheduled two open viewings at Peninsula House during the week. 'We are definitely going to get a lot of students' parents looking at it,' he says, adding that the renting of a room or two could be an option for these types of buyers. He also expects interest from college staff and investors. The Property Price Register shows 30 Wycherley Place selling for €135,000 in 2019. VERDICT: Reinvented with skill and imagination.

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) said that Budget 2026 must retain key tax supports for farmers. The chair of the association's farm business committee, Pat O'Brien, urged the government to renew three critical tax measures for farmers. The Young Trained Farmer Stamp Duty Relief, Farm Consolidation Relief, and the Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) for Slurry Storage are all set to expire at the end of 2025. 'These supports are not optional extras—they are essential tools for keeping family farms viable and encouraging future generations to stay in farming,' O'Brien said. The ICMSA said that the Young Trained Farmer Relief has played a central role in reducing the financial burden of succession, while Farm Consolidation Relief helps address the ongoing issue of fragmented land holdings. 'We keep hearing about the need for generational renewal. These reliefs are practical ways to support that goal, and removing them would send completely the wrong message. 'Consolidation Relief is helping solve one of Irish farming's biggest structural problems – land fragmentation," O'Brien said. "We are also calling for the Stamp Duty and Consolidation Reliefs to be placed on a permanent footing. "ICMSA would argue that long-term planning by farm families is undermined by uncertainty around key supports, and that permanence would reflect the long-term nature of land management and succession," he added. With planning exemptions due in Autumn, possible increases in slurry storage requirements, and pressure from the nitrate's regime, the ICMSA said many farmers are facing significant capital expenditure. 'Farmers are being asked to invest tens of thousands of euros just to stand still,' O'Brien said. 'They're not expanding or upgrading—they're complying with ever changing targets and limits. The ACA offers some financial respite and must be retained,' he said. The ICMSA called on Minister of Finance Paschal Donohoe to "renew these key supports in Budget 2026".
