Kylian Mbappe vs PSG gets uglier: Explaining why footballer claims French team ‘morally harassed' him
French football star Kylian Mbappe has filed a complaint against former employers Paris Saint-Germain accusing the French team of 'moral harassment' during the final season of his stay at the club. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed on Thursday that the forward had stated in his complaint that he was 'lofted' by the club after he refused to sign a contract extension before the 2023-24 season. In France, lofting means isolating a player from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons.
The Ligue 1 club reportedly sidelined the France captain once he refused to extend his contract. The striker was left off a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and forced to train with fringe players.
Mbappe and PSG are in a dispute for a sum of 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages, which Mbappe, currently playing for Real Madrid, claims he is owed by the French heavyweight club.
Mbappé's career with PSG ended after seven years — during which he scored a club-record 256 goals — amid boos from some sections of the PSG faithful during his last home game at Parc des Princes. He then joined Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer. Despite the blow of losing a star like Mbappe, PSG did win the Champions League this year.
Mbappé signed the most lucrative contract in PSG's history in 2022. Back then, even though the contract will till 2024, Mbappe was made to pose with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi on the Parc des Princes pitch and jersey with '2025' on the back.
The Frenchman had in effect signed a two-year deal with an optional extra season. But that extra year was a player option. In June 2023, Mbappe informed the club that he would not take the option up and play an extra year in Paris as he eyed a move to his dream club Real Madrid. This meant that PSG either needed to sell the player so as to not lose him for a free deal. PSG put its crown jewel for sale in the transfer market, but Mbappe rejected an offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal worth 300 million euros.
After the protracted disagreement, PSG claimed that Mbappe had agreed to forgo about 55m euros in bonuses from the deal he signed in 2022. This was a verbal agreement, which is now being disputed by the footballer's legal team. Mbappe is demanding three months' salary and the last third of a loyalty bonus.

Confident Fritz heads to Wimbledon after fourth title at Eastbourne International
Taylor Fritz said he is heading to Wimbledon in confident mood after storming to a record-extending fourth title at the Eastbourne Open on Saturday. The world number five proved too good for fellow American Jenson Brooksby, who had progressed to the final as a lucky loser after defeat in qualifying, with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the Wimbledon warm-up event at Devonshire Park. Fritz also won on the grass in Stuttgart earlier this month and now has five ATP titles on the surface, which is only bettered by Novak Djokovic among active players. 'I'll go there, get a nice practice in tomorrow and go for it,' said Fritz, who is due to play Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday. Fritz has made the event on England's south coast his own in recent years, also lifting the trophy in 2019, 2022 and 2024. After needing three third-set victories to reach the final once again this week, Fritz had to come from a break down in the first set before imposing his dominance over the world number 149 in the second. 'I got better and better with each match and felt like I really upped my level in this match,' added Fritz.

Soccer-Paulinho's extra-time goal sends Palmeiras into Club World Cup quarters
By Fernando Kallas HT Image PHILADELPHIA -Paulinho came off the bench to score a dramatic extra-time winner as Palmeiras edged out fellow Brazilians Botafogo 1-0 on Saturday to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The match, played in Philadelphia's sweltering summer heat, remained goalless after 90 minutes of cagey and ill-tempered football. In the 100th minute, Paulinho delivered the decisive moment, cutting in from the right, dribbling past two defenders and firing a low angled shot into the bottom corner, beyond the reach of Botafogo keeper John. Botafogo pushed for an equaliser but failed to capitalise, even after Palmeiras were reduced to 10 men when Gustavo Gomez received a second yellow card for a tactical foul. Palmeiras held firm to secure their first win against bitter rivals Botafogo in nearly two years, and will next face Benfica or Chelsea on Friday in Philadelphia. It was a tense, compelling clash between familiar foes who have met in several significant games in recent years. Palmeiras overturned a three-goal deficit to beat Botafogo 4-3 in 2023, a result that derailed the Rio club's Brazilian league campaign. Botafogo responded by eliminating Palmeiras en route to their 2024 Copa Libertadores triumph and had since gone unbeaten against them in five consecutive matches until Saturday. The first half was a sluggish affair, with Palmeiras dominating possession but struggling to break down a deep-lying Botafogo defence. Teenage winger Estevao, bound for Chelsea in a 60 million- euro deal after the tournament, provided Palmeiras' only spark down the left flank. However, chances were few, and the first half saw just one shot on target, a fierce strike from Richard Rios that John superbly parried. Botafogo looked far from the side who inflicted a shock defeat on Champions League winners Paris St Germain last week, and Palmeiras dominated possession against the South American champions. Palmeiras returned with more urgency after the break, and Estevao tested John with a low shot from outside the box. Botafogo responded through Artur, whose curling strike was comfortably saved by Palmeiras keeper Weverton, but they kept struggling to create clearcut chances. Estevao had a goal ruled out for offside in the 50th minute before being substituted, a decision that proved pivotal as his replacement Paulinho came up with a deserved winner for Palmeiras.
