Lionel Messi felt Kylian Mbappe was 'protected' by PSG during bitter feud with Neymar as new details over the Argentine's difficult spell in Paris emerge
Lionel Messi was claimed to believe that Kylian Mbappe was 'protected' by PSG throughout the Argentine's spell in Paris. A source who alleges to be close to the Argentine said that Messi, 38, found life difficult in Paris because he was used to being 'a God' while at Barcelona. When Messi signed for PSG in 2021, it was viewed as a major coup for the French side in their pursuit of becoming the best team in Europe. He completed a formidable forward line that saw him line up alongside Neymar and Mbappe - only for the trio to struggle together on the pitch. While PSG won the Ligue 1 title during both of Messi's seasons in the French capital, Messi appeared to struggle with the dynamics of the club compared to the superstardom he enjoyed at Barcelona. Now, in an interview with French publication L'Equipe, an individual appeared to lift the lid on why he may have been unhappy at PSG. They said: 'He didn't have one good moment in Paris. He couldn't go out. He found himself in the middle of the Neymar-Mbappé rivalry. 'He even felt that the club protected the Frenchman and didn't even honour his World Cup title. In Barcelona, he was a God. 'He was used to taking his kids to school, the sun… it was a lot of things combined'. One such incident that appeared to spell the end of Messi's brief spell at the Parc des Princes came in May 2023, when he was suspended for two weeks after making an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia. The trip was not sanctioned by then-manager Christophe Galtier and, although Messi was re-integrated following his suspension, he opted to join MLS side Inter Miami at the end of that season. Indeed, neither Mbappe nor Neymar remain at the club, with the Frenchman having joined Real Madrid while the Brazilian returned to boyhood club Santos after struggling for form at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. But PSG dealt with the loss of the trio in spectacular fashion by winning last season's Champions League under Spaniard Luis Enrique. Enrique's side knocked out Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool en route to the trophy as they romped home to victory in the final by beating Inter Milan 5-0. Messi could be set for a reunion with his former club on Sunday, as Inter Miami face PSG in the last-16 of the Club World Cup.

‘We hope he's back soon': Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso still unsure on Kylian Mbappe's availability for Club World Cup
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is still not confident about star forward Kylian Mbappe's availability in the ongoing Club World Cup. Mbappe, who was hospitalized last week with acute gastroenteritis, hasn't taken part in any of the group games Real played in the tournament, the latest being a 3-0 win vs RB Salzburg. 'I don't want to be optimistic and get ahead of myself, but we need him because he's a top player, one of the best in the world. We hope he's back soon,' Alonso said when asked about Mbappé's availability for the round of 16 game against Juventus on Tuesday. 'We need him and we want him back as soon as possible and in the best possible condition,' Alonso added. The 26-year-old Mbappe was Madrid's top scorer last season, with 43 goals in 56 appearances. He had been following specific medical treatment to recover from gastroenteritis, Madrid said, but has missed two games since being discharged from hospital. Mbappe has also been in the news for other reasons lately with the French star has filing a complaint against former employers Paris Saint-Germain accusing the French team of 'moral harassment' during the final season of his stay at the club. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed on Thursday that the forward had stated in his complaint that he was 'lofted' by the club after he refused to sign a contract extension before the 2023-24 season. In France, lofting means isolating a player from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons. The Ligue 1 club reportedly sidelined the France captain once he refused to extend his contract. The striker was left off a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and forced to train with fringe players. Mbappe and PSG are in a dispute for a sum of 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages, which Mbappe, currently playing for Real Madrid, claims he is owed by the French heavyweight club.

Kylian Mbappe vs PSG gets uglier: Explaining why footballer claims French team ‘morally harassed' him
French football star Kylian Mbappe has filed a complaint against former employers Paris Saint-Germain accusing the French team of 'moral harassment' during the final season of his stay at the club. Mbappé's career with PSG ended after seven years — during which he scored a club-record 256 goals — amid boos from some sections of the PSG faithful during his last home game at Parc des Princes. He then joined Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer. Despite the blow of losing a star like Mbappe, PSG did win the Champions League this year. Mbappé signed the most lucrative contract in PSG's history in 2022. Back then, even though the contract will till 2024, Mbappe was made to pose with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi on the Parc des Princes pitch and jersey with '2025' on the back. The Frenchman had in effect signed a two-year deal with an optional extra season. But that extra year was a player option. In June 2023, Mbappe informed the club that he would not take the option up and play an extra year in Paris as he eyed a move to his dream club Real Madrid. This meant that PSG either needed to sell the player so as to not lose him for a free deal. PSG put its crown jewel for sale in the transfer market, but Mbappe rejected an offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal worth 300 million euros. After the protracted disagreement, PSG claimed that Mbappe had agreed to forgo about 55m euros in bonuses from the deal he signed in 2022. This was a verbal agreement, which is now being disputed by the footballer's legal team. Mbappe is demanding three months' salary and the last third of a loyalty bonus.
