New York Times10-03-2025
Today The Athletic released a podcast and written article as part of a nine-month investigation into the underground world of fake football shirts.
It detailed how counterfeits can be bought for as little as £8 ($10.30) compared with the £85 price of some genuine shirts.
Adam Leventhal, who produced the report, was also told how the money from counterfeit products often goes back into 'serious and violent crime'.

Daryl Morey walks back comments on Lakers' 2020 NBA championship

There are still quite a few people who think the Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 NBA championship, which was won inside the Walt Disney World Resort bubble at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, was illegitimate. With a comment in a recent article in The Athletic, Philadelphia 76ers executive Daryl Morey was placed in that group of skeptics. Morey was quoted as saying that "everyone" around the league he has spoken to "agrees that it doesn't truly hold up as a genuine championship." Shortly after that article was published, he spoke to Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints and tried to elaborate on that comment. 'I'm frustrated,' Morey said over the phone Wednesday afternoon. 'Of course, I respect that title. I defend it to people all the time. It's the thing I want the most.' It wasn't as if the Lakers had an underwhelming regular season prior to the pandemic hitting critical mass and then benefited from the lack of fans and travel. They started the season 24-3 and maintained a high level of play throughout the schedule, and in a span of under 48 hours just prior to the season getting suspended, they defeated the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers. The Bucks finished with the best record in the NBA that season, while the Clippers started out as strong favorites to win it all. Los Angeles ended up holding a 3-1 series lead against the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat before claiming the world championship.

Terry McLaurin requests trade amid contract hold-in with Commanders: Sources

With contract negotiations at an impasse, Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin requested to be traded, team and league sources told The Athletic. McLaurin, 29, has been seeking a new deal with the team for months, believing the value of his current contract doesn't match his value to the team. He signed a three-year deal in 2022 worth an average of $22.79 million annually, which ranks 18th among current receivers. This year is the last on his contract and comes with a $15.5 million base salary. Advertisement Negotiations on a third contract with the Commanders have become increasingly tenuous, prompting McLaurin to skip minicamp in June and the start of training camp earlier this month, leading to possible fines and lost bonuses totaling more than $800,000. Days before Commanders veterans were required to report to camp, McLaurin spoke with reporters for more than 30 minutes following a commercial shoot in Maryland about the lack of progress toward a new deal, saying he was 'pretty frustrated' and 'disappointed.' McLaurin ended his training camp holdout on Sunday and reported to the team, but he was placed on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury, essentially turning his holdout into a 'hold-in.' He's been at the facility working out alongside teammates, but has not participated in any on-field work. After practices, he's walked down to the fields to sign autographs with fans. McLaurin — a face of Washington's NFL franchise through losing seasons, NFL- and federal-led investigations into the team and its previous owner, two name changes and a turnstile of quarterbacks — has led the team in receiving yards since 2019, when Washington selected him in the third round out of Ohio State. This story will be updated.

Shannon Sharpe's Not Returning To ESPN After Settlement

Warning: Discussion of sexual misconduct. NFL Hall of Famer and media personality Shannon Sharpe is not returning to his hosting duties at ESPN after he settled a civil lawsuit with his ex-girlfriend, who accused him of sexual assault and rape, according to multiple reports. Shannon was not criminally charged with rape or sexual assault, and the settlement is not an admission of liability. On July 30, two weeks after the settlement was reached with the woman known as "Jane Doe" in the suit, ESPN officially cut ties with Shannon, The Athletic reported. Shannon hasn't been on ESPN since late April, when the suit, seeking $50 million for "pain and suffering, psychological and emotional distress, mental anguish, embarrassment and humiliation," was first filed. In the lawsuit, Jane Doe accused Shannon of assaulting and raping her in late 2024 and early 2025 while they were in a relationship. Shannon immediately denied the allegations and, in a video shared to his X account on April 22, claimed the accusations were a "shakedown." In a written statement on April 24, he said, "The relationship in question was 100% consensual. At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporaliy from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting my time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me." In the message, Shannon suggested he would return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason. In a statement from ESPN, the network agreed with Shannon's decision. "This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon's decision to step away," they wrote. Jane Doe's attorney, Tony Buzbee, who represented the plaintiffs in several civil lawsuits against Sean "Diddy" Combs, announced the dismissal of the suit against Shannon on X. However, the actual terms of the settlement are not clear. In the post, he wrote, "After protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice." Since his retirement as a tight end for the Denver Broncos, Shannon launched his career as a sports talk host for Undisputed with Skip Bayless and First Take with Stephen A. Smith. While his time with ESPN has ended, he continues to host the podcasts Nightcap and Club Shay Shay. You might be familiar with Club Shay Shay after several interviews have gone viral, like his conversations with comedians Katt Williams and Mo'nique. In response to his departure from the network, Shannon said on the Nightcap podcast that he understood ESPN's decision but found the timing unfortunate. "The only thing that I really asked was, 'guys can we wait until Monday.' My brother [Sterling] is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family.' I said 'this coming out is going to overshadow everything that he's worked his entire life for.' And unfortunately, you know, it didn't happen that way." We reached out to Shannon's team for further comment. We'll keep you updated if we hear back.
