Driver stopped going 176 km/h on Ottawa road this weekend
A driver caught going 96 km/h over the speed limit in Ottawa's west end is one of three drivers who will spend Canada Day without their vehicle.
The Ottawa Police Service says officers monitored multiple known car meet locations Saturday night as part of a Residents Matter Enforcement Blitz, including at College Square, the Merivale Mall and in Barrhaven. Approximately 60 vehicles had gathered at College Square at Woodroffe Avenue and Baseline Road.
Three drivers were charged with stunt driving during the blitz.
Police say one driver was observed going 176 km/h in the area of West Hunt Club Road and Cedarview Road. The speed limit is 80 km/h.
Another driver was stopped going 146 km/h in an 80 km/h zone in the area of Limebank Road and Balmoral Drive, according to police. The third driver was stopped going 103 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in the area of Riverside Drive and Old Riverside.
'One stunt driver was the subject of previous complaints in May and June,' police said. 'Thank you to everyone driving responsibly. Our focus remains on road safety and preventing dangerous driving.'
The charge of stunt driving includes a 30-day licence suspension and the vehicle is impounded for 14 days.
Police say officers also issued six tickets for speeding, two tickets to drivers for driving without a licence, one ticket for excessive noise, two tickets for improper muffler and one ticket for having an obstructed licence plate.
Seven tickets were also issued for documentation offences.
Police say one driver was charged with distracted driving after an officer noticed the driver was watching a movie while driver.

Hernan Lopez, a former executive with 21st Century Fox, and marketing firm Full Play, had been acquitted on appeal following their conviction in 2023 after a judge cited precedent from a US Supreme Court ruling. However an appeals court in New York on Wednesday found that the decision to acquit on appeal had been erroneous, citing a misreading of the law surrounding federal wire fraud. 'We hold that the district court erred in concluding that defendants' conduct did not fall within the scope of Statute 1346,' a ruling said. 'Therefore, we vacate the district court's judgments,' the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled, remanding the case for 'further proceedings pursuant to this opinion'. Lopez and Full Play's case was was one of several to emerge from the 2015 probe from the US Justice Department which rocked world soccer's governing body FIFA and continental confederations for South and North America. The US investigation, which included raids on FIFA officials in Zurich, led to a series of arrests and trails and subsequent charges, convictions and guilty pleas. Lopez and Full Play were found guilty on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy in March 2023. Lopez faced up to 40 years in prison and millions of dollars in penalties. Full Play was expected to face millions of dollars in fines. Before the convictions of Lopez and Full Play, the court had heard that the main beneficiaries of the kickback scheme were six of the most powerful men in South American football. They included former CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz, who died in 2019, former Argentine football executive Julio Grondona, who died in 2014, and former Brazilian football chief Ricardo Teixeira.

Traffic flagger struck by hit-and-run driver in Greater Victoria, police say
A construction flagger is seen in this file photo. Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver who injured a traffic flagger in Oak Bay, B.C., last week. The Oak Bay Police Department said the flagger was struck while working at a construction site in the Greater Victoria community on the afternoon of June 23. The driver involved was 'disobeying traffic direction' in a construction zone along Foul Bay Road at the time, police said in a news release. The victim suffered minor injuries. Officers are now searching for a suspect vehicle described as a white two-door hatchback. Authorities asked anyone with information on the incident to contact the Oak Bay Police Department.

SUV crashes into Beer Store in Ottawa's west end

Emergency crews responded to a call for a vehicle crashing into a business on Baseline Road just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Ottawa Police Service says a customer inside the store was struck by the vehicle. They were transported to hospital for treatment.
