KL cop killed while tailing street racer during Ops Samseng Jalanan along Jalan Kuching
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — A traffic police officer was killed in an accident while on duty during an anti-street racing operation in Kuala Lumpur early this morning. Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said Lance Corporal Muhammad Amirul Aiman Muhammad Othman, 24, died in the incident at about 4.40am. 'He was involved in an accident while carrying out Phase Two of Ops Samseng Jalanan, which started at midnight,' he told Utusan Malaysia. 'At the time, he and another officer were following a motorcyclist who had been performing illegal stunts. They were tailing the rider, not in pursuit. 'As they approached the slip road from Jalan Tun Razak to Jalan Kuching, the officer lost control — likely due to the wet road conditions — and crashed.' Zamzuri said the officer fell to the left side of the road, and the second officer, who was about 10 seconds behind, also lost control and fell. Amirul was believed to have died at the scene, while the other officer sustained minor injuries. He had served with JSPT Kuala Lumpur since completing his training about four years ago and had been assigned to the Intelligence and Operations Division for the past year. He is survived by his wife and three children, and will be laid to rest in his hometown in Terengganu today.

Fugitive who fired at US Marshals agents is fatally shot in Mesa
A man identified by authorities as a known gang member was shot and killed in Mesa after opening fire on federal agents who were attempting to arrest him on multiple fugitive warrants. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting on June 27 near 32nd Street and Baseline Road. The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the incident. Hours after the afternoon shooting, the agency had not released the man's identity. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the man was wanted on multiple warrants — including aggravated assault, aggravated assault involving domestic violence, disorderly conduct with a weapon, misconduct involving weapons, threats, and assault—when Marshals and Mesa police officers attempted to take him into custody. Authorities had the man under surveillance, and when he drove from a residence, they attempted to stop him, the Marshals said. That's when he fired 'multiple' rounds at the authorities, who shot him dead. No police were injured in the incident, and the agency didn't say whether anyone else was involved. Authorities were searching for the man as part of a 22-agency task force focused on apprehending fugitives across Arizona. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the task force has captured more than 2,100 individuals over the past year, prioritizing the most violent offenders and sexual predators. Hunlock Twp. man, 70, sentenced for online child solicitation
Jun. 27—WILKES-BARRE — An apology and a pledge to never do it again were not enough to keep a Hunlock Township man from being sentenced to state prison Friday for soliciting sex from a child. Martin Donald Sorber, 70, was sentenced by Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas to 18 months to four years in state prison on charges of criminal attempt to commit statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and resisting arrest. Sorber was also sentenced to four years probation and required to lifetime registration of his address under the state's Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act. Sorber pleaded guilty to the charges on April 1. Sorber was arrested Sept. 20, 2024, in a joint investigation by Kingston Township police and Wyoming Area Regional Police in an online solicitation sting, according to court records. Court records say Sorber replied to an online post by a law enforcement officer on Sept. 9, 2024. During online conversations, Sorber expressed interest in having sexual relations with the girl, who was an undercover law enforcement officer, court records say. When Sorber arrived at a location believing he was to meet the girl, court records say, he punched an officer in the face when arrested. Sorber was in possession of condoms and lubrication when arrested, court records say. Before being sentenced, Sorber said, "I've never done anything like this before and I won't ever do it again...I'm sorry." Lupas noted Sorber had no criminal record and received a number of letters in Sorber's favor, but said the offense was serious enough to warrant a state prison sentence.

16-year-old accused of killing person is charged as an adult
Jun. 27—AUSTIN, Minn. — A 16-year-old is facing murder charges in Mower County after allegedly shooting two individuals inside a car. Phillip Tyrek Gills, of Austin, is charged as an adult with two counts of second-degree murder with intent. He made an initial appearance in court Friday morning, June 27. Gills was placed on $1 million bail with conditions or $2 million unconditional bail. Gills is accused of shooting and killing a man inside a black Chevrolet Traverse on Feb. 15. According to the complaint, law enforcement responded to a report of a shooting around 1:35 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the area of Fifth Avenue Northwest and 11th Street Northwest in Austin. Officers pulled the driver out of the vehicle to provide medical care, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The front seat passenger had exited the vehicle and was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System — Austin by a neighbor. The passenger was then flown to St. Marys with gunshot wounds. The complaint said the passenger later told police that he and the driver were shot inside the vehicle. Officers found that the driver's window was broken with shards of glass outside of the car. There were bullet shell casings and a bullet hole with no exit hole inside the vehicle, the complaint said. Police also found footprints directly outside of the back passenger seat. According to the complaint, witnesses said there was a third occupant of the vehicle who fled the scene. One witness said they heard a gunshot and looked toward the vehicle when they saw a black male wearing a tan hoodie and black pants exiting the back seat of the car. The male ran eastbound, and a second witness saw him walking fast east on Fifth Avenue Northwest in the 900 block. According to the complaint, the witness pointed out a trail left in the snow on Fifth Avenue Northwest that belonged to the suspect. The complaint said a third witness saw the male disappear behind a garage on Eighth 8th Street Northwest. Officers followed the last matching footprint to 809 6th Avenue Northwest. Another individual shared their surveillance footage that showed a male running and walking east in the 700 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest wearing a tan sweatshirt, black pants and white shoes, the complaint said. Police identified the suspect in surveillance footage at 709 5th Street Northwest and 711 5th Street Northwest. The male was breathing heavily and coughing on the surveillance footage at 709 5th Street Northwest, the complaint said. The homeowner at 709 5th Street Northwest identified him as Gills. Another person in the home told police he heard Gills having a heated conversation at the residence. The person said he saw Gills change clothes when he arrived at the residence. An autopsy of the driver was completed on Feb. 16. There were seven entry wounds in the victim's body, with all entrance wounds on his back, the complaint said. The person who sat in the front passenger seat told police the driver knew Gills, but he did not. According to the complaint, they stopped the car to pick Gills up. The passenger heard several gunshots, turned and saw that the driver appeared to be dead. Gills then shot the passenger twice, the passenger said. The defendant was certified to adult court on June 25. An initial appearance is scheduled for July 7.
