Andrean's Kaden Maxwell decides to ‘stay in the lab.' Playing in Senior Future Games is part of his formula.
A baseball tournament awaited him.
'If you want to get better, you can't take any days off,' he said. 'You have to stay in the lab, keep working out and keep throwing.
'Every time you take a day off, you take two steps back, and that's going to mess up your progression.'
Maxwell's busy schedule continues in the coming week, when he'll return to Georgia to play in Prep Baseball's invitation-only Senior Future Games.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Maxwell, who will be a senior, isn't the only player from Northwest Indiana hoping to catch the eyes of college coaches at the event, which includes games Tuesday and Wednesday. Chesterton pitcher Troy Barrett and Illiana Christian pitcher Tanner Post will join him.
'I'm just going down there to show what I've got and hopefully get seen by some schools,' Maxwell said.
Maxwell, a pitcher and first baseman, was a two-way standout for Andrean during his junior season. He hit .380 with 31 RBIs and went 4-1 with 1.50 ERA in 26 1/3 innings.
Andrean coach Dave Pishkur said he believes Maxwell could be just as effective in dual roles in college too.
'I'm curious to see what all of these DI schools are looking for out of him because I think he's a potential two-way player,' Pishkur said. 'He's had some batting practices where he's put on a show, and I've always said that I thought he had the best stuff on our team this year, which is saying a lot on a team that had some really good arms.'
Maxwell said he has already been in touch with multiple Big Ten coaches.
'It's a stressful process, and it's definitely coming fast,' he said. 'But you just have to realize what your value is and how good of a player you are. I think that's the case for a lot of people. They don't think they're good enough, but then they start getting recruited.'
To keep sharp when he doesn't have a game, Maxwell practices with Andrean shortstop Jet Dutton, who will also be a senior.
'He's always working to become a better player,' Dutton said. 'Especially in these last few years, we're always going out to hit with each other, always doing something to keep improving.'
Facing Maxwell, Dutton has learned how difficult it can be to hit against him.
'He has a high spin rate on his curveball and his slider, and they move a lot,' Dutton said. 'It's hard to hit a ball when it's moving like that.'
Maxwell intends to keep moving. In the fall, he'll play for the Chicago Cubs Scout Team, another high-level program that competes in tournaments all over the country. Its alumni list includes 2025 Lake Central graduate Joshua Flores, who was picked in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
'I've been competing against some really good teams recently, and I've talked with a lot of coaches who've been communicating that they like what they see,' Maxwell said. 'Hopefully I've got a good future here.'

Five-star recruit James Johnson flips his commitment from Georgia to Texas in SEC stunner
Five-star defensive lineman James Johnson has flipped his commitment from Georgia to Texas on Tuesday in a big SEC decision. The No. 1 defensive line prospect in the country, according to Rivals, will join the Longhorns' 2026 class. His change of heart comes just 2 ½ weeks after he chose the Bulldogs over Texas. 'It wasn't until I committed to Georgia that I realized something was missing,' Johnson told Rivals. 'As much as I respect the program and the staff, it just didn't feel like home. That realization helped me understand that Texas is where my heart is, and where I see myself thriving both on and off the field.' The 6-foot-2 285-pound defensive lineman also had Florida and Miami in his top four before committing to Georgia the first time. He is ranked as the 10th-best player in his class nationwide on Rivals. Johnson pointed to the coaching staff as the most significant factor in his decision to flip to Texas. His primary recruiter was Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker, who joined the program since 2024 and has NFL experience with the Dolphins. 'I love the kind of coach [Baker] is. He knows how to coach, he knows how to teach and he really makes it easy to learn,' Johnson said. 'Coach Baker has coached up some great players, and I know he can help me.' Surprisingly, Johnson was not the only give-star recruit to choose the Longhorns that they reeled in Tuesday. Tyler Atkinson, the top linebacker out of Grayson High School in Georgia, also chose Texas over Georgia. Texas now has five five-star recruits in its 2026 class. The only other team to match that is Alabama. 'Texas is doing big things.' Johnson added. 'Coach Sark is building a top program. They know how to recruit, they win a lot of games, and they develop players at Texas.' Johnson will play his senior season at Miami Northwestern High School, a school that's under scrutiny following the investigation into the head coach and former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was suspended after providing 'impermissible benefits' to players. The talented team, which also has 2026 five-star Calvin Russell, won the Class 3A championship in Florida under the leadership of Bridgewater, an alumnus of the program.

Penn State Listed Among Top Choices for No. 34 Player in the Class of 2027
Penn State Listed Among Top Choices for No. 34 Player in the Class of 2027 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Maxwell Hiller the No. 1 ranked interior offensive lineman in the class of 2027, according to 247 sports, just listed his top eight schools. The list includes the following: South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, Maryland, Ohio State, and Penn State. Advertisement The Nittany Lions are well in the running to bring the highly-praised prospect to Happy Valley. Hiller is rated as a consensus four-star across multiple sites, and is ranked as the No. 34 prospect in the class of 2027 according to 247sports. He has great speed for his size at 6'5" 300 lbs. He showcases this on the gridiron, as well as on the hardwood. Believe it or not the highly-recruited offensive lineman, is an outstanding basketball player. With all the D-1 offers he has in football he also has one to play basketball at the D-1 level. On June 20 Hiller announced that he received an offer to play basketball at La Salle University. Advertisement This is the type of skill set that opens any college coaches' eyes up. Many basketball players who have not touched a football are recruited out of college to try to transition to being professional football players. Coaches see the footwork they posses at their size on the basketball court and think they can apply that to football. Hiller has the same traits of those players coaches hope to turn into good football players, but he instead has played football for a long time. The junior at Coatesville Area High School has as good of football technique as any offensive line recruit. He showed that at the Future 50 as being listed as the MVP of the event. Advertisement Hiller has a ton of great options, and a long timeline before he has to make an official decision. If Penn State were able to land him, in a few years he could be looked as the crown jewel of their 2027 recruiting class. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
